Tēnā koutou

What a fantastic weekend we had when What Now visited our school. Thank you to all those people who

contributed to what was a happy occasion that brought wonderful smiles to all those that attended. What

Now is about unadulterated fun for children and the team brought that to our school in bucket loads.

It was fascinating to watch the live television team from TV2 set up and produce the programme. I had a

number of children and parents comment about the way they worked and the career opportunities that

were on display.

On the same weekend a number of us attended the funeral of Judy Baird, wife of Torbay’s past Principal

Bob Baird. Judy was a School Principal herself and mother of our immediate past Principal Wendy Sandifer.

While I am still only new at Torbay School it is very evident the influence the Baird family has had on our

wonderful school.

Judy and Bob have played an active role at our school organising people from the Mayfair Retirement

Home to come and read with some of our children on a Friday morning. This is a tribute to their commit-

ment to education and the wellbeing of young people, a commitment that was very obvious at Judy’s fu-

neral. Our condolences go out to Wendy, Bob and their families.

The Torbay community spirit was also very evident at the Zumba fundraiser for our PTA Chair Megan Sad-

ler, the hall was full of sweaty bodies pumping out the moves for an entire hour. I got very tired watching.

Congratulations to all those that took part.

Our role growth building programme is in its early planning stages and architects have been appointed. We

have been meeting regularly with them over the last several weeks and they will be presenting a concept

design for our new 12 classroom block to the Board at our meeting next week. We are hopeful that this

design will then be approved by the ministry and we can then share it with our community.

I attended a PTA, Fun and Food Fair meeting last night, Vanessa White one of our parents is leading this

committee and is doing a fabulous job. The event on Nov 2nd is going to be very special. The team will be

looking for lots of support as the Fair gets closer. One of the things we will need help with is the collection

of tables from various venues on the 1st of November. We will need a couple of strong people and a trailer

or small truck. If you can assist please contact Vanessa on 021 641 004. We also require the use of a power

generator to power some of the events on the field. If you can help us out once again, please contact

Vanessa.

Thank you to all those parents who took the time out to come to our learning conversations. This was my

first experience of this event at Torbay and I was very impressed with the quality of the interactions be-

tween children and parents. There was a lovely atmosphere around the school and I hope you agree with

me that it was a valuable exercise.

If you were unable to attend please take the time to make an appointment with your child’s teacher to

share their learning. I would also like to thank our staff for whom learning conversation week is a long one

at work. Thank you to our staff for not only being present on the night but also for all the work that lead up

to our children being able to talk and share their work in such a creative way.

Lastly I would like to thank you all for the messages of support we have received with respect to our strug-

gle to improve pay and conditions and ultimately the educational system.

School will be closed on Wednesday next week as we join a march up Queen St to emphasise to the gov-

ernment how much of a crisis we face if steps are not taken immediately. I apologise for any inconvenience

this may cause and thank you for your support!
