And to do that, you need to know how much it is designed to safely carry, both in terms of payload and load volume.Your Ford Commercial Vehicle Dealer can provide professional advice on important specification aspects, and help to find the right van for your budget and business needs.

The new Ford Transit Courier is designed to carry cargo –and lots of it.Choosing a new van is an important decision with lots offactors to be considered. While some aspects, like selectingthe most appropriate derivative, identifying the intendedprimary use and determining load box size are relativelysimple, others, such as calculating payload are more complex.

Payload capacityTo calculate payload, you need to know two things: thevehicle’s gross vehicle mass (GVM) and its kerb mass.

Gross Vehicle Mass (GVM)GVM is the maximum permissible weight of the vehicle whenloaded and ready to go – that includes the weight of thevehicle itself, ancillaries, driver and crew (assuming theindustry standard weight of 75 kg/person), fluids, fuel tank90% full (1 litre of diesel = approximately 0.85 kg), optionaland aftermarket equipment, and cargo.

Kerb MassKerb mass is the weight of a standard-specification Baseseries vehicle, including fluids and fuel tank 90% full, butwithout the driver, crew or cargo. If you intend to load thevehicle close to its maximum capacity, it is recommended thatyou add a margin for error of 5% of the GVM to the kerb massfigure before calculating payload, to reduce the risk ofoverloading.Payload is the difference between the two.

Gross vehicle mass minus kerb mass = payload

Gross Train Mass (GTM)Gross train mass is the total permissible all-up weight of avehicle, together with its trailer and load.

So to help you choose the right vehicle for your needs, here aresome more detailed explanations about the factors that caninfluence a vehicle’s payload. These include, but are notlimited to:

Driver and crewWe calculate the weight of the driver and crew based on theindustry-standard weight of 75 kg/person. Remember that thedriver and crew are not included in the kerb mass figure, sowhen a driver or crew boards the vehicle, its payload will bereduced accordingly.

Factory-fitted optionsMost factory-fitted options will affect a vehicle’s payload. Forexample, air conditioning can add approximately 13 kg to avehicle’s weight, and therefore reduce its payload accordingly.

SeriesAll kerb masses quoted in this brochure are for standard-specification Base series models without a spare wheel. Trendseries models will generally weigh more than Base series dueto the increased level of features and equipment.

Manufacturing tolerancesVariations in manufacturing and production processes meanthat no two vehicles are likely to weigh exactly the same.

Accessories and aftermarket conversionsIt is important to think carefully about what to do with yourvehicle after you take delivery. Any accessories fitted oraftermarket conversions to the vehicle may adversely affect itspayload. Please speak to your Ford Commercial Vehicle Dealerfor more information and advice.

Fuel, performance and emissionsThe test used to establish fuel consumption and CO2 figures has changed to deliver results that are more representative of real life driving. The Worldwide Harmonised LightVehicle Test Procedure (WLTP) has replaced the old NEDC test. For passenger vehicles (such as the Transit Courier Kombi), the Fuel Consumption figures shown are derivedfrom the new WLTP test. However, until 6th April 2020, the CO2 figure shown for passenger vehicles will be the NEDC equivalent and this will be used to calculate Vehicle

Excise Duty. For Commercial vehicles, both the Fuel Consumption and CO2 figures shown will be NEDC equivalent.

The table below shows the fuel consumption and CO2 emissions for each available engine when fitted on a standard specification vehicle (with no options or accessories).Adding options or accessories to your chosen vehicle can impact WLTP fuel consumption and CO2 emissions. Please speak to your Ford dealer for more information.

The fuel consumption you achieve in real life conditions and CO2 produced will depend upon a number of factors including any options and/or accessories fitted, variationsin weather, driving styles and vehicle load.
