becomes a close friend of Jonathan, King Saul’s son and marries Saul’s daughter, Michal. Unfortunately, King Saul becomes suspicious of the popular David, fearing him as a rival for the affection of the people. David must run away to save himself from Saul’s insane anger. David becomes a “Robin Hood” leader of a band of roving outlaws. When King Saul and Jonathan die in battle against the Philistines, David becomes, at first, King of Judah, later King of all Israel.

But there were problems during King David’s reign too. His own son, Absalom had wanted to take over the throne. Absalom led a revolt against David, in which army generals were involved, who supported him. Absalom was defeated and killed, but David allowed Absalom’s generals to go free after their defeat.

Now, as David lies dying and bids farewell to Solomon, who will succeed him as king, he has many fears. David knows that others oppose Solomon, supporting another heir to the throne and he, therefore, warns Solomon about these men.

PARSHA SUMMARY First Torah Reading - Genesis 47.28-50.26

The Sidrah tells of the last period of Jacob’s life. He and all of his family have settled in Egypt at the invitation of Joseph. This must have been the happiest years of Jacob’s life. He has been reunited with Joseph. He has seen peace come among all of the members of his family. These are seventeen good years for all of them.

But Jacob is now an old man. He will soon die and unafraid, he knows that his life is coming to an end. He asks all of the brothers to gather together for his final message and blessing. As he speaks to each of the brothers he points out to them their strengths and weaknesses. 1. Reuben: though he is the first-born and should stand at the head

of all his brothers, he is undependable. 2. & 3. Simeon and Levi: these brothers have been violent men. They must guard their tempers or there will be trouble for them in

time to come. 4. Judah: he is courageous and blessed with the strength of a lion.

His descendants shall be rulers some day. 5. Zebulun: his descendants shall be a seafaring tribe. 6. Isaachar: his descendants shall be a hard-working tribe living

peacefully on the land. 7. Dan: his descendants shall be judges among their people. 8. Gad: his descendants shall have to battle against enemy peoples

around them. 9. Asher: his descendants shall be happy, prosperous farmers. 10. Naphtali: his descendants shall be spokesmen for their people

and they shall carry out successful military missions. 11. Joseph: he is outstanding among them all and many blessings

shall come upon his descendants. 12. Benjamin: his descendants shall be warriors who love battle.

When he ends his blessing of all his sons, Jacob makes a last request that they take his body back to Canaan to be buried in the Cave of Machpelah at Hebron. There, too, were buried Abraham and Sarah, Isaac and Rebekah. Years later Leah had been buried there. Jacob is to lie next to his wife, Leah. Jacob dies and is taken back to the land of his fathers.

After Jacob’s death, Joseph again reassures his brothers of his forgiveness and love, saying, “Am I G-d that I should judge you”? They are to live in peace among themselves. Joseph honors his promise to help them for the rest of his life. Eventually, having lived a full life, he dies as, of course, do all of the brothers. Thus ends the Book of genesis, the first book of the bible.

Haftarah Reading - I Kinds 2.1-12 The Haftarah is from the First Book of Kings. It tells of the final

blessing which King David offers to his son, Solomon. Solomon is to succeed his father to the throne of Israel. David has been ruler for forty years (1000-960 B.C.E.) It has been an exciting reign and David will be remembered with great love and admiration by the Hebrews of all the later centuries down to our own day.

Here we share some highlights of his life. Born the youngest son of Jesse in Bethlehem, David, as a daring youth fights and kills Goliath, the Philistine giant. He is a talented poet and musician and Saul at first enjoys listening to David’s music performances on the harp. David

Through music, Shabbat Shira helps create,

sustain and solidify community.

The Jewish collective voice is most powerful and

expressive when joined as one in synagogue

prayer and music.
