To address this issue,the Italian based specialist companyMectron has developed an alternativewith the patented Chemical VaporDeposition (CVD) synthetic diamondtechnology which is said to signifi-cantly improve adhesion characteris-tics of diamond coated tips.

The tips are supposed to offer anumber of clinical advantages includ-ing a reduction of local anestheticsand the preservation of soft tissue. Ac-cording to the manufacturer, they alsodecrease noise and improve proximalfinishing. In addition, the risks of con-

tacting the adjacent tooth as well asmetal contamination are said to be re-duced.

Mectron has developed six new ul-trasonic inserts mainly dedicated tocavity preparation procedures. As regards the morphology of the inserts,2 truncated conic tips (CP1 – CP2), 2 cylinder tips (CP3 – CP6), 2 ball endtips (CP4 – CP5) will be available fromthe start. They can be used not only fortraditional dental treatments but alsofor the finishing of prosthetic prepara-tions, compound resin or gingival peel-ing. The CP tips are compatible with allMectron ultrasonic scalers, includingthe new top level unit MULTIPIEZOtouch.

With Profin/EVA Lamineer Tipsfrom the Swedish company DentatusAB, clincians will be able to improvethe finishing and polishing of dental

surfaces. According to the com-pany, they can be used with

the same top quality resulton all surfaces includingconcave and convex orflat and rounded. Thetips are used in a

Profin or EVA handpiece generating areciprocating movement. The back-and-forward movement of the tips iseasier to control and does not generateheat, making it an easy-to-use proce-dure in comparison to rotating instru-ments, the company said.

The Lamineer Tips for Profin andEVA handpieces are said to provideexcellent and well defined surfacesin all areas of the teeth, also in nor-mally hard-to-reach areas. The tipscome in a wide range of grits, sizes,shapes and surfaces covering allkinds of treatments, including aes-thetics, prophylactics, finishing offillings and orthodontics, amongstothers. A number of diamond grit in-struments (150 μ down to 15) coverall kinds of treatments from gross re-moval of excess material interproxi-

mally to the most delicate polishingof a filling margin.

Some tips are coated with tungstencarbide, which allow the removal ofcomposite without scuffing surround-ing enamel. Others are available inwood or plastic for prophylactic treat-ments. Holliger is offering a range of univer-sal dental instruments that are com-patible with all implants currentlyavailable on the market.

Their universal implantology set,for example, comprises a straight oran gular screwdriver that fits with allcontra-angle instruments. Accordingto the company, their small size and extended length makes access and op-eration in the buccal cavity much eas-ier for dentists. The torque ratchet key(10 to 40 N/cm) with its universal

adapter can receive any contra-angleinstruments for a precise control.

In addition, a stainless steel steril-isable tray protects all these instru-ments and helps to accelerate thecleaning process, the company said.

Danville’s new PrepStart H2O AirAbrasion System sprays a conicalmist of water around the air-abrasive

stream to capture the dust. It is avail-able for all existing PrepStarts andcan easily be retrofitted to a classicPrepStart system in about 30 min-utes, according to the company.

With PrepStart H2O, the air pres-sure, abrasive and water flow can beeasily adjusted for ideal clinical use.A water selector switch allows usewith or without the water spray. Ei-ther 27 μ or 50 μ aluminum oxidecan be used. Water is easily added to

the removable tank. Placing thefilled tank in a microwave for up to60 seconds will bring the water to

46°C, a temperaturewhich has been re-ported to enhance pa-tient comfort.

According to thecompany, cutting per-formance is not re-duced by the water. Afoot pedal provides in-stantaneous on/off con-trol.

Tip sizes are avail-able in .48 mm and .38 mm (.019̋ &.015̋ ). Nozzles are easily inter-

changeable and both handpiece andnozzle are steam autoclavable. Asthe PrepStart is powered by a simpleair connection, the device containsno electronics nor requires any elec-trical connections. The unit operatesat 4 to 8 bars (60 to 120 psi).

PrepStart H2O comes completewith one handpiece, .48 mm nozzle,air lines and 27 μ aluminum oxide.Instructions provide details on useand clinical suggestions.

Air abrasion, which does not mi-crofracture enamel, is one of themost conservative treatments. Themethod allows prepping into dentinwith little discomfort, so that anes-thesia is rarely needed. It is alsosilent and eliminates the whine andvibration of the drill. According tothe company, dentists can treat mul-tiple quadrants in one appointmentand with one diagnosis as there is noneed to wait for anesthesia to take ef-fect.

Bisher waren Zahnärzte und Techni-ker zur Herstellung passgenauer Werk-stücke auf spezialisierte Labore angewie-sen, die mithilfe von teuren und geräumi-gen Fräsmaschinen die bestellten Teileanfertigten. Durch die ausgelagerten undkostspieligen Arbeiten gab der Arzt je-doch die Kontrolle über die Fertigung ausder Hand, riskierte Qualitätseinbußenund musste die Werkstücke gegebenen-falls manuell nachkorrigieren.
