Celebrate World Marriage Day with Worldwide Marriage Encounter on Sunday February 11, at a 2:00 p.m. Mass at Sacred Heart Church in Waterloo. The Mass will meet Sunday obligation and feature music provided by Agnus Dei. A special blessing for couples will be offered and a reception

Salt for the Week

We’re five weeks into what the

Church calls “Ordinary Time”. Not a

time of anticipation like Advent, nor a

time of introspection like the

upcoming season of Lent, but ordinary. Regular.

Where we live most of our days. The scriptures

for this weekend reflect the challenges of

ordinary time living. Job begins by saying “Is not

man’s life on earth a drudgery?” (Jb7:1). It’s

that Monday morning feeling… tired and a long

week ahead of us. Do you ever feel like it’s a rat

race—and the rats are winning? In our Gospel

lesson Mark details Jesus, fresh in from a

synagogue appearance and probably needing a

rest, and He is called upon immediately to heal

Simon’s mother-in-law. Seems there’s no rest

for the wicked OR the divine! But this is life and

this is exactly how and where Christ works in us!

In today’s epistle (1 Cor 9:16-23) Paul reminds us

of our obligation to preach the Gospel. Most of

us do that by the way we live our lives of

worship and service, day in and day out.

Somedays we do it willingly, happily and

generously. And other days—well it might be a

struggle. The Gospel calls us all to be slaves to

all, to try to be all things to all, “to save at least

some.” In other words, to do the best we can

with what we have been given and give the rest

to God. That’s how grace works in our lives. So

“ordinary time” isn’t probably so ordinary after

all. It’s the fertile ground of spreading the Good

News of Jesus—one day

at a time.

Scott Hahn’s Covenant Love: Introducing the Biblical Worldview will be offered at 5:30 p.m. on Thursday nights during Lent in the conference room at St. Mark Church. A light supper will be served. Pray for Peace—We pray the rosary every Thursday at noon at St. Mark. Your prayers make a difference.


HOW COME WE ARE NOT RECEIVING PRECIOUS BLOOD FROM THE CUP?

The recent spike in flu cases in our nation and

communities is a cause for concern among many

people. Compromised immune systems and being

inattentive to things like covering our coughs,

washing our hands, etc., all contribute to sickness.

Interestingly enough, the “common cup” is not as

much a contributor as one might think. Research

studies support that the alcohol content of the

wine as well as the minister turning and wiping the

cup seem to make a big difference. Of course it

helps when those who know they are sick avoid

receiving from the cup! Actually the presider/

priest runs the most risk, as our rubrics for

purifying the vessels state that the priest needs

to consume what is rinsed out instead of putting it

down the drain. With +300 people in church, you

can see the complexity and concern.

With that in mind we will receive Holy Communion

under one species only until at least Ash

Wednesday. We still believe Jesus is

sacramentally present Body, Blood, Soul and

Divinity in either the Host or the Precious Blood.

As always, He has us covered.

RCIA—Remember being taught that when we make decisions there’s a little angel on one shoulder and a devil on the other trying to get our attention? As adults we call that our conscience. How does our conscience guide our decision-making? On Sunday, February 11, Father John will talk to the RCIA group about how we use our consciences to make moral decisions. We start at 9:00 a.m. in the conference room of St. Mark, break for Mass, and then come back for more discussion until noon. You’re very welcome to join us!

Clean Out Your Closets? Lenten Clothing Drive

Sunday, February 25 Through the Social Concerns coordinators of the Emmaus Pastorate, we are sponsoring a LENTEN CLOTHING DRIVE. St. Vincent DePaul thrift stores in the Waterloo-

Cedar Falls area are in great need of clothing, They also are accepting rags for which they are paid 16 cents a pound. Please begin “editing” your dressers, totes and closets for good usable clothing, as well as any sheets/towels, etc., for rags. These should be separated into bags and clearly marked “RAGS.” Each parish will have an assigned drop-off area for the collection. The St. Vincent DePaul Society will send their truck for pickup at the end of the drive. Stay tuned for more details!

Spotlight on a Deacon

How many permanent deacons are there in this Archdiocese? Over the past 40 years, 154 men have been ordained to the permanent diaconate. Thirty-one of those deacons are now deceased. Currently, there are 127 permanent deacons (both active and retired) who serve in parishes throughout the Archdiocese.


The Pastorate Faith Formation Board will meet on Wednesday, February 20, at 6:30 p.m. at St. Mark, Edgewood. This is for all board members of all parishes.

Ministry of Mercy—The Emmaus Pastorate has created a Ministry of Mercy group in each parish to help grieving families plan for the funeral of a loved one. As a family plans a funeral, a Ministry of Mercy member from their parish will be present to guide them through the process. We have been working toward this for several months at St. Mark and St. Patrick. Be sure to let your family know what your wishes are for your celebration of life when you die. If you tell them what your favorite Scripture readings and hymns are now, it makes the process of planning your funeral more meaningful. Don’t be shy. Tell them what you’d like!
