Dear M r ia n F r i e n d s ,March has arrived in great style in Mairangi Bay. The vjeather continues to bebeautiful at least from the vievTpoint of the non-farmers, V7e have had a few smallshowers but i t continues to be nice vjeather and warm almost every day. Our gardenis not doing much good because of the dryness but that is a small price. V?e are

having our peaches nov: and they are delicious. VJe do not have very many this yearat a ll bu t neither do the orchards. On the market I hear they are selling fo r 49cents per peach so v/e feel very fortunate. We had to tie some pie pans in the treeto keep the birds from them and i t has worked very well. Ue do have all thetomatoes we want even though I only have tv;o vines. They are a grafted hybrid typeand bear siaall tomatoes but lots of them. Ruth has even made about 10 quarts ofjuice, lie have also had a lot of cucumbers with 25 quarts of pickles now bottled. The' dry weather has been a serious thing for the farmers in the country. Thegrass has dried up and some of the dairy farmers have had to dry their cows up.Many of the lambs v/ere sold at a light weight so they are hurting quite a bit.In south Auckland they have been urging the people to conserve V7ater because theirpipe lines are not big enough to cope with the demand. The city is growing rapidlydown there and services haven't kept up. They have a plentiful supply of water inth e mountains but can ' t get i t to the ci ty fast enough. The boys started to University this vzeek which has kept them busy sorting outtheir new schedules and finding the various places \^here they are to have classesand labs. They seem pleased to be back on a schedule after the holidays. Theystayed fairly busy after we came home painting a house. Laurie is getting alongvery well with her school work. It is V7arm enough that nearly every night they comehome and go to the beach for a sv;im either before or after supper. I've even gonemyself two or three times now that the water has got warm.Church activities are back in full swing now. One Saturday ive went with someof the District church people over to Rangitoto Island for a picnic and sightseeingday. lie v/ent over on the ferry and back. It was nice and warm so we enjoyed itin spite of a bit of sunburn. The island is an extinct volcano so i t is aninteresting place to visit occasionally. The next Saturday V7as a very busy day.Several of the men of the church went fishing at 6:30 a.m. until about 11I t V7as nice and calm so a nice morning to be out. We caught several fish of vjhichmine was the largest at 8^ pounds so I was proud of i t . Actually the smaller oneshave a bet te r taste but i t is a thri l l to catch the larger ones. Then t ha t a fte rnoon vre had our annual church picnic. There v/ere 60 there for a good picnic. We held i t a t a beach and had a ll the traditional games such as sand castlecompetition, foot races, sack races, balloon toss, swimming, etc. Then ve had asausage barbecue along vjith the other things that everyone had brought and the kidsplayed cricket with a tennis ball. We finally got home about 8 all tired out butsince i t was Saturday night i t was time to get ready for church the next day.Another new act iv ity this month was a slot car club v/hich began last v/eekfor the kids from 11 to 15. We had about ten las t vxeek for the f i rs t time andsince they seemed to enjoy i t I am sure there v/ill be more in the coming weeks.About half of these came from church families and the others from the area. Thisweek the senior young people are doing to try their hand at the cars on Saturdayn igh t which sh ou ld be good. This morning I spoke for the ladies coffee morning with 16 ladies and 4 kidspresent. There is some variation but many of the ladies attend regularly. I tgives a fa i r ly informal place to get be t t e r acquainted. We have had a fev/ visitors during the month and have averaged 60 of morning and30 in the evening so we vjere pleased. Sunday School is running about 35 so far. Some of the parents who are nonChristian are taking advantage of the beautifulweatiier to go somev/here every Sunday so tha t has held us down a l i t t l e .The very best to you a l l as you emerge from the snov; to begin thinking aboutspring gardens and lax^nmowing. God be with you a l l as you seek vjays to

    Our v/eather has cont inued very enjoyable a l l t h i s month. The days a re ge t t ingsho r t e r and th e high tempera tu re nov: is more l i k e ly to be 72 than 78 bu t stillvery enjoyable . Ue had a br i e f shov/er l a s t n igh t and prospec t o f a b i t more inth e nex t day o r tv;o bu t it v / i l l be welcome s ince everything i s dry a nd b rown . Westill have a few tomatoes bu t a l l e l se gave up. Wow it i s t ime to p lan t some morel e t tuce , caulif lov/ers, cabbage and onions j u s t as soon as the ground get s soaked upa b i t . I have the seedl ings in boxes get t ing ready for t h a t . K'e a te the l a s t ofth e peaches t h i s pas t v;eek. Even the flov/ers a re a b i t scarce t h i s year becauseof the drouth and the poor farisiers are having a very dif fucul t time and having tofeed out some o f tl ie ir hay even though it i s very ear ly in th e y ea r. That i schanging now v^ith th e a r r i v a l o f th e r a i ns , l.lien it comes it i s with a vengeance .The v /es t c o a s t o f th e Sou th I s l a nd had 24 i n c h e s i n 24 hou r s this week whichcaused v/idespread f looding and s l i p s . People belov; th e g la c i e r s v/ere evacuatedbecause with so much water on the glac ier ic e th ere was a danger of it "exploding"from th e weigh t .The kids cont inue to move along in school . They were o ff Fr iday, Monday, andTuesday for the Ea st er ho ld ia ys . There i s no snow so no snow days here bu t itseems t h a t they still ge t qu i te a lo t o f t ime of f . Kirk i s very e nt hu se d ove rthe Univers i ty and seeras to be doing wel l . Ricky and Laurie have l es s enthusiasmbu t a re doing ok .Specia l church events of the months s ta rte d o ff v/ith ne spealcing to the LadiesCoffee Horning. There a re u su ally 15-20 p re se nt f or a time of fel lowship and astudy programme. Early in the month I a lso had a fu ne ra l fo r a lady who at tendedhere r egu la r ly bu t was no t a member. Those a re d i f f i c u l t s ince she knew about th eneed for immersion but being sprinkled in the Anglican Church as a baby she choseno t to accept it. She was a woman of gr ea t fa i th bu t no t obedient in tha t r espec t .Some of the l ad ies attended a nat ional Womens Convention fo r a day. Severalmembers go t together one Saturday night j u s t to have a music evening to s ing songsbot h s ac re d and secular . One Sunday night v/as a film service showing the filmc al le d "V is it or s Only". It v;as a thought provoking film which I thought was verygood. We have continued to have s lo t car competition for the 11-15 year oldswhich has received qui te a b i t of in teres t with up to 20 taking peurt on a Fridayn igh t . Most o f t h e s e a re from non -Chr i s t i an hdmes so when we have ou r t im e o fBible Study V7e have a chance to reach them a l i t t l e bi t . For Easter we put outa c ircu la r from the Bib le Soci et y and an information l ea f le t t e l l ing o f our churchs er vic es t o 600 homes in th e a r ea , lie had no d i r ec t r es u lt from it b u t f e e l t h a ti t is a V7ay of le t t ing the community knov; that Easter is special and that the Chruchis alive. V/e are allowed to put tliis in th e le t ter boKes leagally so it doesn'ttake too long. It i s a b i t impersonal bu t has an impact for a small amount ofmoney .The big event for our fam ily this month V7as the acceptance of the congregationof an offer by one of the meriibers to swap houses. It means tha t as soon as thelegal papers are completed we wil l be moving into a newer parsonage. I t v i l l belarger and is better bui l t than V7here V7e presently are. The nev/ parsonage adjoinsthe church property so we are looking forward to moving. I t \i7ill not have asgood a view and possibly not as much sunshine but we tliink the advantages are morethan any loss . By the end of next month I should be able to give you a newadd res s fo r th o se v7ho wr i t e to u s .

Jolm and Sarah Mott v/ere our house guests over the Easter weekend fo r anenjoyable vis i t . They are from Keokuk, Iowa and are over here v7orking for theYMCA. They a re in a sma l l town about 150 mile s sou th o f he re and v/here t h e r e i sno Church of Chris t . Sarah's Dad i s Chuck I-Jebb v/ho i s a preacher and evangelist"By the Uay" television prograra there. Nov7 he preaches for three smal l churchesand does evangelis t ic v/ork as vjell as working v/ith another puppet te levis ionprogram. Sarah has a s i s t e r a t Centra l Chris t ian College so you may have met hera t some time. TJe v/ere pleased to have tliem v i s i t and enjoyed the fel lowship.I 'm glad that you seem to have had a good revival meeting. They always are forthose v/ho . take an ac t ive pa r t in them. If each o f us wi l l remember t h a t v/e a re toserve tlie Lord and do His v/ork then His kingdom i s cer ta in to go forv/eird. For thoseof us who forget tha t the Kingdom wi l l still go forward bu t we v/ i l l be l e f t behind.

    May 2, 1978Dear Adrijin Friends,

It i s a nice f a l l day today# Last night was th e c oo le st one so f a r when thetemperature dropped to 52 degrees. IJe had our heater on fo r the f i r s t time and willbe ready fo r the elect r ic blankets before' long. The ra ins have come again th i sl a s t month so a l l i s green once more. I t was a rea l re l i e f fo r those people whodepended on local water supplies and fo r the milk fsirmers and vegetable growers. For a l l of us it was a welcome change from the dust. P^om. now on we can escpectrain frequently and wil l be wishing soon that it would clear up fo r a bi t .Biis has been a month of change fo r our f ami ly , lie bought another car on March31 and have been enjoying i t . I t i s a 197^ Hunter which is a four cylinder Englishassembled car . It has 39000 kilometers on it vdiich i s about 25f000 miles . Me hadto pay i^3^50 for it and considered that a good buy. A new one would be about $6500.I t has been well cared, fo r and so we are pleased. V/e also got a dif ferentre f r igera tor which i s twice the s ize o f the one we had. A lady was t rading it in sowe Tiere able to swap with her. Now we have more room than' we can afford ' the food. The big event was that we moved into a different parsonage on April 25 I t isadjoining the church property. The house is five years old of timber constructionon a concrete block basement. There are three bedrooms up s t a i r s and a sewingroom dovmstaris tha t Kirk has taken fo r his bedroom. It i s ful ly carpe ted with abui l t in oven, exhaust fan, wastemaster , so we f ee l r ea lly plush. The basement' i s f in is hed a s a two car garage. The whole house i s bigger than than the other oneand bet te r constructed so it . is nicer , lie are s t i l l f igur ing out which l i gh tSTjitch contirols what and figuring out where we put everything. There is quite ab i t of work I want to do .outside in the yard vrhich T-dll take some time but thereis no rea l hurry, l/e only moved about half ^ mile but i s was a lo t of work. Ruthand I spent a l l one day loading things into the car and taking them dovm and storingthem away and then the next moming 3 of the men of the church came and moved thefurn i ture dovm in about an hour and a ha l f . All we had to do then Vfas ge t it a l lassembled and situated as we wanted i t . Ue s t i l l have some pictures to hang whenwe dec ide fo r su re where we want them. Vie don ' t have a sea view any l onge r anddon ' t get quite as much sunshine in a day but the convenience of being by the churchis vrorth a lo t . i/e are fa r enough away that i s i s no problem and there is a fencein between. For th os e who vrrite to us the new address, i s 55 Maxwelton Drive,Mairangi Bay, Auckland 10.

The kids complete the i r f i r s t term of school th is week and then have a two weekhol iday before the second teim. They a l l seem to be get t ing along f ine. The boysa re heavi ly involved in baske tba l l now and wi l l be fo r ano ther th ree months. As a congregation we atar ted the month with a church grovrth seminar on Sundayafternoon April 2. The leader was from Australia and had been invited over to makea tour through the country to several congregations. No specific resul ts can bepointed out but he did cause us to once again examine j us t what we are doing as acongregation which was good. One th ing t ha t the Church Boa rd decided would begood i s fo r one Board member and myself to v i s i t every member on the congregationto f ind out what d i f f e r en t ones th ink of our church l i f e and see what sugges t ionsthey have. It wil l be a dif fe ren t Board member each night and I T^iill go to a l l thehomes . It t a ke s a lot o f t ime bu t we have s t a r t e d on .it and th e r e s u l t s seem to beworthwhile. The main value i s jus t fo r each member to Imow that what they thinki s considered valuable. Along with other meetings I seem to be a t some churchact iv i ty s ix nights a vreek which gets a b it t i r ing. During April I ei ther led orat tended meetings of one kind o r another , li e seem to thr ive on meeting to dosomething. By the time the v is i t ing i s added on i t -was a f u l l month. This past Saturday was a work day a t the camp grounds a l l day and then in theevening I went with the youth to the thermal pools. It was an enjoyable evening inthe hot Hater. Part of the time vras spent in jus t soaking in the hottest pooland par t i f it iras outside ii^ere they are allowed to roughhouse. They viere puttingpne person on the shoulders of another and then f ig h tin g to see who would ge tknocked o ff in to the water. I .thinis everyone enjoyed it even if there was somesore muscles the next day and general t i redness .Ue are looking foniard to our annua l church family camp this month. It s ta r t son Pbriday ni^t May 19 and concludes with the nnon mea l on Sunday. Then we wil lhave services back a t the church bii lding on the Sunday night to begin a wee&revival meeting, i/e will not have services each night and the purpose i s more tostrengthen the exis t ing congrega tion than fo r evangelismbbut we hope it wil l beboth. Dipk Smith from dovm on the South Island wil l be preaching fo r us and weexpect to have the Il i l l igan Choir here fo r most of the week. They are expected herea t that t ime fo r a tour of the country. We wil l run a chi ldrens program eachafternoon a f t e r school fo r an hour. These have" been good in the past and should beaga in t h i s yaar .i/e wil l be remembering you in our prayers th is month. Thi s should be the timeof year for VBS and soon afterr^rard' the camp program so it i s a very important time .A ll such th in gs ta ke a l o t o f e f fo r t bu t They can r e s u l t i s sou l s won to JesusGh2?ist and tha t i s what i s most: important. It i s possible to be se l f ish now andleave the work of the Kingdom to others but woe to us when we ge t to the judgment. It i s a simple proposit ion J ei ther Christ i s f i r s t in our l ives or He i s not andwe can expect to receive our reward accordingly. As Jesus aid, " I f and maywould come af ter me, let 'h im deny himself and take up his cross daily and follow me.For whoever would save M s l i f e wi l l l o s t i t ? and whoever loses h is l i f e fo r mysake, he wil l save it. For what does it pro f i t a man if he gains the who36 worldand loses or forfeits himself?" Luke 923ff ^ ^

Greetings from sunny Auckland, u'e had two weeks of mostly rain th is month butmostly this has been a very mild Tdnter. Today th e sun is shining and it will get upto about 60 so i t is pretty nice. Tiro weeks ago the men of th e church had a workday and poured some new sidewalks fo r us. One goes from our house to the churchparking lo t so we don ' t have to wade a cr os s th e grass. The other was a shor t oneto the clothesline. I t i s a revolving l ine so Ruth can now stand on sol id concreteinstead of a slick grassy slope, l/e are appreciating them very much.

Rie first weekend o f t h i s month we had a mus ic team w ith us from At l an t a Chr i s tian College. They had been over here for a 2 month tour and we were the final step. They were la th us from Thursday night t i l l Sunday night so we go t well acquainted andreal ly enjoyed t he i r v i s i t , ije had to rash them from the evening service to catchtheir plane to the States. One of them was a New Zealand man studying in the States,ue had met him before and are impressed. I think when he comes back in two yearsto work in the church here he wil l be a big asset . One man graduated from Atlantathis year and i s now preaching in his home church. He i s a good man ;d.th abi l i ty sowe expect great things from him. As the present congregations get ministers there i smore and more thought of establ ishing new congregations. There are still twochurches who. need preachers badly. Ho New Zealanders a re present ly ava ilab le so theywould be happy to have an American. I viould lilce for you to pray for these churchesa t Matauro. and Hoki t ika .

Last Saturday Laurie and I spent t he aft emnon a t the a i iport v isi ting withJohnnie liarion and h is wife. He i s the F ie ld D ir ec to r fo r South Pacific JDvangelizingli'ellovrship and has been over here to talk to a congregation Tiith the idea of comingover to work with them. He wil l be le t t ing them know def in i te ly th is month. Then:je picked up a CBS student who has been here fo r txro months as an in te rn and brou^ tlim home with us; fo r the weekend. Yesterday we took him back to the airpor t tobegin his t r ip to the States . Tomorrow the l i i l ler family are due to a rriv e inAuckland. They have been here fo r three years and going back to the Sta tes to remain. They will stay ui th us a couple of days before leaving on Friday. Then aboutmg. 13th we viill have a couple from Phoenix and .a young man from i ianhattan ChristianJollege arr ive to be with us fo r a few days. It i s a busy time but t he Chr is ti an?ellotiship i s enjoyable.

The kids are get t ing along f ine a t school. They are nesirly two th i rds throughthe school year so they are s tar t ing to think of end of year examinations. The boyspar t icu la r ly are having to work fa i r ly hard and don' t f ind out how they are doingi jnt i l the year ends. Ruth i s gone with the church ladies t o I 'e ll sf or d today fo r acombined meeting. I t is a lovely day for a t r ip so they will enjoy i t .

    School wil l be nearly ready to begin there when you read t h i s so eve ryone can 'bucIdLe down to the fa l l act iv i t ies . God bless you a l l i s our prayer.The Hin t e n s

Dear Friends ,Sprinc; i s coiaing on a t good speed here. There are a l l kinds of flowers in blooia.ihe Jonqui l have been b looming fo r weeks novr and the camel l ias . There are manydifferent types of bushes with f lowers and other types of flowers that I have noidea what the i r names are . ..'e have been begging various kinds from people. to puton the steep bank in our back yard, l/e are wanting types tha t make good groundcover so we won't have to mow it . bome of them keep blooming most of the year ands tay green a l l year so it makes a nice looking bank. 3o fa r we have se ve n types

including quite a lo t of a br i l l i an t orange ice plant which i s really colorful. Theblooms close a t night and open each day unless it i s rainy. I have a couple ofgrafted tomato plants out now and one lone pepper. I transplanted some let tuce andcabbage but the plants were too small and the ground too wet so I don't expect muchout of them. Our roses are s tar t ing to bloom and look lilce they wil l do well if Ican keep the aphids off them. The only problem with ha-'/ing growth the year around i stha t the insec t s are never k i l l ed so vie have l o t s of them. Slugs and sna i l s have tobe poisoned or they will eat off a l l the small plants . They use sea weed forfert i l izer so I picked up a lo t of it about two weeks ago and put it in a barrel. You f i l l the barrel part vray and then top it with water and le t i t soak. Then youuse the liquid for fer t i l izer . I t i s turning black and smelly so it should be goodfor something. Right now we are getting quite a lo t of rain so l iquid fe r t i l i ze r i snot much value but l a te r on we wil l get to see what it wil l do. A lo t of peopledig i t into thei r gardens also just to get some organic matter to break up some oft h e i r yellow clay .Church l i fe is going on at a pretty regular pace . Laurie and I took part in anintermediate camp in August which was enjoyable. There were 25 kids present but onlyone from here. It was in the school holiday break and too many parents took the i rkids with them somewhere, i.e did think the camp was worth irhile anyr-ray. DarrelEoyd from liedicine Lodge, Kansas arrived in August and will be Trorking with us asa youth minister after the end of October. Bight noir he is visi t ing various churchesin the country and helping them in planning their youth programs. He will be learning a lo t for himself also. Barrel does not have sufficent support for his salaryyet so what I want to do is to send ^100 a monthr-of our support to help him. Youall have been generous to the point of embarrassment for us and we do not want tobuild np more of an account than we need. Since Darrel will be working directlywith us on a fu l l time basis we feel he will be a direct help to us so by using yourmoney to help him i t is also a great help to us. I hope 3''ou follow that reasoning. The church here is very much in favor of Barrel Tiorking here but i s unable to pay hissalary so it is a ll coming from the States, l io st ly the money is coming from thePhoenix area plus some from his home church in Kansas and perhaps another churcho r t i ro t h e r e .

Our chi ldren have noir entered the th i rd and f ina l school term of the year so theyare very busy studying for end of the year exams. Laurie just finished one importantser ies. I f she has done well enough she won't have to s i t th e final ones but shewon't laaow unt i l mid. ilovember so that keeps her studying. The toys s ta r t talcingthe i r f inals in about t iro weeks and they stretch out fo r a month or so unt i l theyfinish in mid-November. .They think they are doing very well but only time will te l lthat . The boys woijld lilce to work for the siammer months but unemployment is fa i r lyhigh so they will have trouble getting a job. Ruth continues to be active in church^d home activities. ;.'e were pleased this month to hear that my baby brother's wifehad given birth to a son a t Crocker, iiissouri. This was thei r f i r s t so it iran abig event, iiy folks live next door to them so the l i t t le felloir is getting a lo t ofa t t e n t i o n ,Huth and I are to go to l.ellington this month for the annual Conference of theChurches. I t is alirays a good time to visi t with people we haven't seen for monthsor maybe since the year before. I t lasts from Thursday night the 19th to iiondaynoon the 23rd so there is quite a lo t of time, ."e Tn.ll plan to stop at Levin tovisit with the preacher there on the iionday night and then drive through to Aucklandthe next day. i.e are looking forward to it.

John was from South iifrica, andLouise T-as bozn in Africa to Hew Zealand parents. Anyway they and their tirodaughters received liew Zealand citizenship last month so they are now permanentlya prxt of the country. John is doing a good job minis te ring to th e Annesbrookcongregation at Helson, Ihey average about 175 for their morning services andare pretty active.
