HIGH PERFORMANCE STEELS FOR THE PUNCHING
AND BLANKING INDUSTRY

BESTE EIGENSCHAFTEN DES WERKZEUGSTAHLES THE BEST PROPERTIES OF TOOL STEEL
Die Anforderungen an Umform-, Schneid- und Stanz-
werkzeuge steigen permanent. Heute werden von vielen
Werkzeugen – vor allem wegen des ständig steigenden
Kostendruckes – erheblich höhere Standzeiten erwartet,
als noch vor einigen Jahren. Dementsprechend steigen die
Anforderungen an Werkzeugstähle.
The demands on forming, cutting, punching and blanking
tools are ever increasing. These days there is a considerably
longer service life expectation for many tools than there was
some years ago, mostly due to the constantly increasing cost
pressure. Consequently the demands on tool steels are also
increasing.
The highest performance characteristics demand high
strength and ductile tool steels at the same time. In steel
technology increasing the ductility is possible by improving the
homogeneity and the degree of purity. This can successfully
be done by means of electro-slag-remelting (ESR), or by
production in a powder metallurgical process. BÖHLER
Edelstahl is the innovative leader in both technologies.

The reason for using quality tool materials is obvious, as the
material amount of a high performance tool is often only 5% of
the total value of a tool, yet it extends the lifetime of tools
many times. In a word, it’s a direct commercial advantage in
production.

• distinct carbide lines particularly in
the center of larger diameters
• large single carbides
• a lower degree of purity
• differing dimensional stability in lon-
gitudinal and transverse directions
• reduced toughness
DESU-Erzeugung
Verbesserte Standzeit durch:
• Geringste Nichtmetallische Einschlüsse
• Geringe Mikro- und Makroseigerung
• Gute Homogenität und hoher
Reinheitsgrad
• Homogenes Gefüge über gesamten
Querschnitt und gesamte Stablänge
• Herstellung großer Stababmessungen
bei gleichbleibender Karbidverteilung
• Gleichmäßige Maßänderung

SCHNEIDEN/STANZEN VON HOCH- UND HÖCHSTFESTEN BLECHEN CUTTING/PUNCHING AND BLANKING OF HIGH-STRENGTH AND ULTRA HIGH-STRENGTH SHEETS
Zur Gewichtseinsparung und Erhöhung der Crashsicherheit
von Fahrzeugen werden zunehmend hoch- und höchstfeste
Stahlbleche eingesetzt. Die Werkstoffvielfalt reicht dabei
von DP- (Dualphasen) über TRIP- (Transformation Induced
Plasiticity) bis hin zu pressgehärteten (22MnB5) Stählen. Dabei
High-strength and ultra high-strength sheet steels are being
used more and more for two reasons: They save weight and
they increase the crash safety of vehicles. The great variety
of materials ranges from DP steels (dual phase steels), TRIP
steels (transformation induced plasticity steels) to press-
hardened (22MnB5) steels. Such components reach a tensile
strength of up to 1,500 MPa. Sheets thicker than 1.5 mm are
still cut by time and cost intensive laser cuts because a shear-
cutting operation seems not to be profitable enough due to a
lower tool service life.
In combination with a high tool strength and hardness, an
extremely high tool wear is produced when high-strength and
ultra high-strength sheet parts are cut in conventional mecha-
nical shear-cutting operations. These new high-performance
sheets have considerable potential for the future, which can
only be tapped when the best-suited production technology
complies with the very high functional demand.

Die Einflussfaktoren beim Schneiden und Stanzen von
hoch- und höchstfesten Blechen sind u. a.:
• Schnittschlagdämpfung
• Kantenverrundung
• Schneidspalt
• Werkzeugstahl
• Blechdicke
• Blechbeschichtung
• Komplexität der Schnittlinie
• Beschneiden / Lochen
• Stabilität der Presse
Schadensmechanismen und Vermeidung
Beim Kaltumformen wird die Werkzeuglebensdauer bei ein-
fachen Massenteilen meist durch den Verschleiß bestimmt.
Bei komplizierten Formteilen wird die Werkzeugstandzeit
wegen der hohen Kontaktspannungen durch den Ermüdungs-
bruch von Werkzeugaktivelementen begrenzt. Vorzeitiger
Werkzeugausfall durch Ermüdungs- oder Gewaltbruch verur-
sacht unerwartete Störungen im Fertigungsprozess. Neben
den Ersatzkosten für die gebrochenen Werkzeuge können
auch erhebliche Maschinenstillstandskosten anfallen.
In der Kaltumformung versagen 80% aller Werkzeuge beim
Herstellen einfacher Massenteile durch Verschleiß.
The influencing factors during cutting, punching and
blanking of high-strength and ultra high-strength sheets are:
• dampening of the cutting shock
• edge rounding
• blade clearance
• tool steel
• sheet thickness
• sheet coating
• complexity of the cutting line
• trimming/punching
• stability of the press
Types of wear and how to avoid them
Tool service life of simple parts is most frequently determined
by the wear produced during cold forming. Tool service life
of complicated formed parts is limited by fatigue fracture of
active tool elements due to high contact stresses. An early
tool break produced by a fatigue fracture or a forced fracture
causes unexpected delays in the production process.
Machine standstills and the replacement for the broken tool
incur considerable costs.
80 % of all the tools in cold forming fail due to wear during
simple mass parts manufacture.
14
SCHADENSMECHANISMEN UND DEREN VERMEIDUNG TYPES OF WEAR AND HOW TO AVOID THEM
Abrasiver Verschleiß
Verschleiß ist der fortschreitende Materialverlust aus der
Oberfläche eines festen Körpers, hervorgerufen durch mecha-
nische Ursachen, im Wesentlichen durch Reibung. Unter
Abrasion versteht man den pflügenden, spanenden oder
brechenden Materialabtrag beim Kontakt zweier Werkstoffe.
stoffes. Karbide verlangsamen diesen Prozess.
Abrasive wear
Wear is the continuous loss of material from a solid’s surface
subjected for instance to constant mechanical rubbing.
Abrasion is the process of wearing down of material by
plowing, fracture, chipping of two materials during contact.
Erosion of the material’s matrix is generally produced in tools
used in cold forming. Carbides slow down this process.
Abrasiver Verschleiß – Erosion der Matrix / Abrasive wear – erosion of the matrix
Lösungsansatz:
Hochfeste Matrix – Hartphasen (Karbide)
Approach to solve the problem:
High-strength matrix – hard phases (carbides)
Schneidkante / Cutting edge
15
Adhesive wear
Adhesion is the forming and disjoining of adhesive contact
points on bounding surfaces. Adhesion in steels is especially
expected when metallic counter bodies do not have any
separating layers. In order to improve the tendency towards
cold welding of tool steels it is first necessary to develop a
higher hardness/strength of the heat-treated martensitic steel
matrix. Then, no adhesion develops between the carbides in
the tool steel and the material to be formed. Consequently,
the carbides’ higher content and uniform distribution increase
the adhesive wear resistance.
Adhäsiver Verschleiß – Kaltaufschweißung, Materialauftragung / Adhesive wear – cold depositing, material application
Schneidkante / Cutting edge
Lösungsansatz:
Hochfeste Matrix – Minimaler Karbidabstand (feine
Karbide, gleichmäßige Verteilung, hoher Karbidgehalt)
Approach to solve the problem:
High-strength matrix – minimum carbide distance (fine
carbides, uniform distribution, high carbide content)
16
SCHADENSMECHANISMEN UND DEREN VERMEIDUNG TYPES OF WEAR AND HOW TO AVOID THEM
Ermüdung
Unter Werkstoffermüdung versteht man Rissinitiation und
Risswachstum aufgrund zyklischer Beanspruchung. Obwohl
Fatigue
Fatigue of materials is the crack initiation and crack growth
in materials subjected to cyclic loading. In most of the cases,
though, tools used in cold forming are pretensioned under
pressure by reinforcement. They may, nevertheless, break by
fatigue fracture when being injected.
Ermüdung – Oberfl ächenzerrüttung, plast. Deformation
Fatigue – spalling, plastic deformation
Tribooxidation – chemische Reaktion Werkzeug – Werkstück
Tribo-oxidation – chemical reaction between tool and workpiece
Lösungsansatz:
Hohe Streckgrenze & Duktilität – feines, gleich-
mäßiges Gefüge – Reinheitsgrad (minimale innere
Defektgrößen ––> Karbide, NME)
Approach to solve the problem:
High stretching limit & ductility – fine, uniform micro-
structure – degree of purity (minimum inner defective
sizes ––> carbides, NME)
Lösungsansatz:
Feines und gleichmäßiges Gefüge – Fähigkeit zur
Oberflächenpassivierung (Legierungselemente
Cr, Al, …)
