THE RAIL TUNNELWhen you think of Kriegsstrasse, the main road goingthrough downtown Karlsruhe, what would you change tomake it easier to get around, and increase quality of life inthe surrounding neighborhoods? Would you create a tunnel

for through trafc between Karlstor and Ludwig-Erhart-

Allee? And use the new-found space for an attractively

landscaped tram line with overground stops, a tree-linedboulevard, bicycle paths and safe pedestrian crossings? Then weve got great news for you: in 2019, Kriegsstrassewill become a beautiful boulevard with an excellenttransportation infrastructure and a highly desirable placeto live. Thanks to this re-design, Karlsruhes southerndistricts will be better connected to the city centre. Thetunnel will make driving through the city faster and more con-venient, and the Kriegstrasse line will expand and enhanceKarlsruhes public transport network. Whats more, oncethe Kriegsstrasse project is complete, all tram-trains will berouted through the Kaiserstrasse tunnel making way fora rail-free pedestrian zone aboveground.

Length of Kaiserstrasse rail tunnel: 2.4 km

Length of southern branch of rail tunnel: 1.0 km

    Number of underground stations: 7

Length of rail-free pedestrian zone: 1.0 km

Length of road tunnel: 1.4 km

Length of tram line: 1.4 km

Number of stations above ground: 5

    Number of tunnel entrances/exits: 2

Why is Karlsruhe moving the tram tracks below Kaiserstras-se? Because there is so much to see and do on the mainshopping boulevard and market square. And soon, you willbe able to do much, much more. Like going for a relaxing

stroll with friends, people-watching while sitting outside a

caf, or nipping across the street without having to cross

the tracks. Soon, this will all be reality. Because startingin 2019, after the new tram lines on Kriegsstrasse arecompleted, the pedestrian zone will be entirely rail-free.The new double-track tunnel directly under Kaiserstrassewill span 2.4 kilometres and include the Europaplatz, Lamm-strasse, Kronenplatz and Durlacher Tor stations. The branchtunnel for south-bound lines will connect the Marktplatz,Ettlinger Tor and Kongresszentrum stations. This willreduce wait times, make it easier to get around Karlsruheand the surrounding region, and make the city an evenmore attractive destination for visitors. Even better: oncethe rail tunnel is completed in 2017, the number of tramstraveling down Kaiserstrasse will be slashed by 70 per cent.

CONVENIENT AND ACCESSIBLEWell-lit, easy to get around, and safe: the state-of-the-

art stations meet all passenger requirements. All areas

of the underground stops can be reached without

additional assistance. The platforms have ample space

for manoeuvring, and are the same height as the oors

of Karlsruhes tram-trains: enabling passengers to board

without having to step up or down. This is particularly

important for wheelchair users, senior citizens, and

parents with baby buggies and reects the architects

    commitment to putting people rst.

THE UNDERGROUNDSTATIONSBright, spacious, easy to get around, and witha modern air: the new underground stationsare far from the dingy, uninviting stereotype. The stops were designed with the requirements

and wishes of todays passengers in mind, andno detail has been overlooked. All street-levelentrances feature boards that provide real-timeinformation on train schedules. Escalators, liftsand staircases lead to attractive concourses, where signs clearly point the way to the correctplatform. From there, passengers enter a fascin-ating world underneath the hustle-and-bustleabove. Thanks to an out-of-the-ordinary ligh-ting concept, people and objects cast colourfulshadows onto the oor, walls, and ceilings. Toemphasize this effect, all platform surfaces willbe white. And thanks to sophisticated systemsfor re safety, communications and videosurveillance, travelling through the new tunnelwill not only be highly convenient and enjoyable, but also very safe.

CUTTING-EDGE: TUNNELCONSTRUCTION WITH ATUNNELING SHIELDThe rotating cutting shield is over 70 metres long, weighs 300 tonnes, and boasts a diameter of over9 metres. The tunnel boring machine is set to dig itsway through the ground underneath K aiserstrasse, advancing 10 metres each and every day. The

cutting shield is equipped with disc cutters idealfor grinding up soil and rocks. As the machinemoves forward, it lines the space directly behind itwith reinforced concrete. The result: a tunnel shellmade of reinforced-concrete rings.

CONSTRUCTION WORK Excavating tunnels in the middle of the city entailsextensive construction thats a matter of course. But its vital to ensure that the impact on residents, visitors and drivers will be minimal. How will this

be possible? Firstly, elements of the project willnot be carried out simultaneously, but in a series ofmeticulously planned phases. And second, thechosen construction methods are truly state-of-the-art: such as tunnel-boring using a tunneling shield. This means that while the boring machine will bemaking its way through the city underneath our feet, life will go on as usual aboveground. The stationsunder Kaiserstrasse and the market square will beconstructed using the tried-and-trusted cover-and-

cut method. This will dramatically reduce theamount of time required for overground construc-tion, as the lions share of work will be carried outunderneath the nished tunnel roof. The tunnel forthe south-bound lines, spanning a comparativelyshort distance between Marktplatz and Ettlinger Tor,will be erected using the New Austrian TunnelingMethod. The bottom-up cut-and-cover method willbe deployed between Ettlinger Tor and Augarten-strasse, and underneath Kriegsstrasse, due to thetunnels shallow depth at these sites.
