Generally speaking, the negation word keinis the equivalent of nicht ein. There are, however, somedifferences in the use of these two negations. They are not always interchangeable. In some cases,keincan be replaced with nicht. In these cases, too, certain restrictions apply.

In principle, keinis the equivalent of nicht ein. There are, however some differences in meaningbetween these two negations:

"Neutral" statement: kein

The negation wordkein

in "neutral" negated sentences:

Er hat einen Fehler gemacht. Er hat keinen Fehler gemacht.

Sie haben ein Tor geschossen. Sie haben kein Tor geschossen.

Einer von ihnen versteht mich. Keiner von ihnen versteht mich.

Emphasis: nicht ein (= kein einziger)

It is possible to use nicht eininstead of keinto emphasize the negation. In spoken language einmust be stressed:

Er hat im Diktat nicht einen Fehler gemacht (= keinen einzigen Fehler)Sie haben nicht ein Tor geschossen (= kein einziges Tor)Nicht einer von ihnen versteht mich (= kein einziger von ihnen)

Contrastive negation: nicht ein, kein

icht eincan also be used when the negation is contrastive. Acontrastive negation emphasizes apart of the negated sentence and contrasts it with a corresponding part in an affirmativestatement. The stress indicates which part of the sentence is emphasized:

Sie hat nicht ein Auto gekauft (sondern zwei).

When einis stressed, it is a cardinal number. In this case, it is not possible to replace it with kein:

Not: Sie hat kein Auto kauft, sondern zwei.

In all other cases, either nicht einor keinmay be used:

Sie hat nicht einAuto gekauft (sondern ein Motorrad).Also: Sie hat keinAuto gekauft (sondern ein Motorrad).

Nicht einer von ihnen hat mir geholfen (sondern einer von euch).

Also: Keiner von ihnen hat mir geholfen (sondern einer von euch).

Plural nouns, material nouns, collective nouns, abstract nouns without articles

The negation word keinis used to negate plural nouns, material nouns, collective nouns andabstract nouns that are not accompanied by an article (seeNouns without articles):

Sie hat Autos gekauft.

Sie hat keine Autos gekauft.Wir haben Limonade bestellt. Wir haben keine Limonade bestellt.

Sie hatten Angst. Sie hatten keine Angst.

In "neutral" negated sentences the use of nichtis not possible or not common. The negation wordnichtcan be used as acontrastive negation.The emphasized part of the sentence is stressed:

Sie hat nichtAutos gekauft (sondern Motorrder).Wir haben nicht Limonade bestellt (sondern Bier).Sie hatten nichtAngst (sie waren nur beunruhigt).

Also:Sie hat keineAutos gekauft (sondern Motorrder).

Wir haben keine Limonade bestellt (sondern Bier).Sie hatten keineAngst (sie waren nur beunruhigt).

Indication of profession, origin, etc.

The negation words keinand nichtare used to negate indications of profession, origin, etc. that arenot accompanied by an article. A simple negation of the profession, origin, religion, etc. isexpressed by nicht:

Sie ist nicht Pilotin (= Das ist nicht ihr Beruf).Er ist nicht Christ (= Das ist nicht seine Religionszugehrigkeit).Sie sind nicht Italiener (= Das ist nicht ihre Nationalitt).

Like nicht, keincan be used to express a simple negation:

Sie ist keine Pilotin (= Das ist nicht ihr Beruf).Er ist kein Christ (= Das ist nicht seine Religionszugehrigkeit).Sie sind keine Italiener (= Das ist nicht ihre Nationalitt).

Keincan also be used to negate features and characteristics of a profession, origin, etc.:

Sie ist keine Pilotin (= Sie hat nicht die Fhigkeiten oder Eigenschaften einer Pilotin).Er ist kein Christ (= Er hat nicht die Eigenschaften oder Merkmale eines Christen).Sie sind keine echten Italiener (= Sie haben nicht die Eigenschaften, das Verhalten von Italienern).
