    Introduction

The Pfeildorf: Freistadt of Sudenlandsourcebook is intended to provide a WFRPsetting for those GMs who wish to centre their

campaign in one of the larger towns in thesouthern Empire. The information containedherein assumes that the Imperial Civil War asdescribed in the first edition Enemy Withincampaign (including my Empire at Warfinale) has taken place. There is alsoinformation that relates to the Storm of Chaosof 2521-2522, for those who prefer to placetheir story in the aftermath of that conflict.

This sourcebook is written in a manner that willcover either version ofWFRP, which basicallymeans that stats (profiles, trappings, etc.) and

prices of items are excluded in favour of baseNPC descriptions. Of course, given that I leantowards WFRP1e, I might have missed keepingthe text edition-free in some areas. GMs maywant to consider adjusting to suit their version /game. Maps are included for both Players andGMs, with the latter being keyed to thedescriptions of various locations.

    Background

HistoryLike many of the Imperial towns founded in thefirst two centuries of Imperial history, Pfeildorfarose from humble beginnings. The followingpresents a brief overview of the town and itsimmediate surroundings.

Before SigmarAlthough twelve tribes are said to have unifiedbehind Sigmar to wage war with Dwarf alliesagainst the greenskin horde, there were manysmaller tribes that existed in alliance with thelarger tribes in the land that became theEmpire. One of these was the Tratten tribewhich along with the Agbard and Gesschebitribes formed the Avermanni League. In turn, the Avermanni League was part of theBrigundian confederacy.

The tribes of the Avermanni League ranged

from the area along the Upper Reik throughoutthe region of what would became the westernregion of the Averland province including thesite where Nuln would be established. TheAvermanni grew wealthy from their control ofthe nearby trading routes. They alsoconstructed hillforts in the area to defend

themselves from tribes seeking to gainadvantage at their expense.

The Tratten tribe built their principlestronghold, Adlerhorst, on the crestoverlooking the confluence of the Rivers Slland Upper Reik from the south. This allowedthe tribe to control trade between the Dwarfs ofthe Black Mountains and the cities of Tilea, with the lands of the Unberogens and

    Teutognens to the north.

Until the unification of the tribes by Sigmar, the Trattens were most often at odds with theneighbouring Menogoth tribe to the south.Raids for livestock and women werecommonplace as the two tribes vied forregional dominance.

    The Coming of the Empire

After the Battle of Black Fire Pass, Sigmartravelled throughout the newly unified Empirein order to settle conflicts among the tribes both large and small within his realm.

Though the Trattens and Menogothsmaintained their separate tribal identities, theirblood had long intermingled with one anotherand neighbouring folk. Their customs and

religious beliefs had also become virtuallyidentical. With so much in common Sigmarwas able to convince the tribal leaders to putaside their remaining differences.

The Tratten tribe voted to accept the Menogothchief Markus as their lord with the provisionthat he marry the daughter of their elderly chiefCenwulf and establish his capital at Adlerhorst. With this agreement in place, Sigmar namedMarkus as the Ealdorman of the Imperialprovince of Slland.

Capital of SllandThe old hillfort of Adlerhorst covered theentire ridge from the cliff overlooking the

confluence of the two rivers to the locationof where the Temple of Sigmar now stands.During the time of Ealdorman Markus, twosmall settlements were established on theflanks of the ridge along the two rivers. Intime, they grew into small towns as did thesettlement on the ridge.

During the reign of Grand Baron EdgarRoebling in the third century, the threesettlements were united into one town, which

took its name from the original hillfort. TheGrand Baron then began the process ofrebuilding, including stone walls to offer thetownsfolk protection from bandits, goblins, and ambitious vassals.

Taxation to secure the funds led to riotingwhich Grand Baron Roebling and his heirsput down with savage efficiency. Still, theland was not particularly wealthy at thattime, and rebuilding was not completed for30 years, by which time the grandson of

Grand Baron Roebling was the Elector ofSlland.

Like many of the Imperial provincial capitals,Adlerhorst prospered in the Empire firstmillennia. Its location was ideal as it wasrarely directly affected by the politics ofEmperors and would-be Emperors in the cities

to the North. Unfortunately, Adlerhorst didsuffer with the rest of the country from thegreed and depredations of the Drak WaldEmperors (the Hohenbachs). The ensuingBlack Death which brought down EmperorBoris the Incompetent and his cronies alsoravaged the population of Adlerhorst. Nearly80% of the population died or fled the town inthe vain hope of escaping the plague. Theruling Roebling family was decimated.

Age of WarsAfter the brief recovery during the reign ofEmperor Mandred Skavenslayer, the weakenedEmpire collapsed into petty fiefdoms held bypowerful warriors and their retinues. Many

wars and skirmishes were waged as thepowerful sought to extend their dominion overthe weak.

The battles fought over Adlerhorst was amicrocosm of the Empire as a whole. Manywho tried to capture the town as well as somewho held it died in their struggles. Manystructures built in the first millennium weredestroyed and cleared so these could not beused by the opponents of the sitting lord of

Adlerhorst. The old towns walls were torndown and their stones reused to re-fortify theold hillfort.

The Election of Emperor Otto VI in 1359 I.C.re-unified the southern Empire and brought anend to the Age of Wars.

The End of SllandSince the mid-14th century, Adlerhorstprospered as the southern Empire remained

relatively peaceful. The capital of Sllandslowly expanded until it again reached the sizeit achieved during the end of the firstmillennium Empire.

In the 18th century, the Orc warlord GorbadIronclaw invaded the Empire from the east. His vast army swept up through Black Fire

Pass and ravaged Averland and Slland.Known more for his collection of toy soldiersand as a dandy than any martial prowess, GrandBaron Eldred von Durbheim of Slland rodeforth with his army from Adlerhorst to meet theenemy. The Battle of Staig was an unmitigateddisaster and the army of Slland was utterlydestroyed. With his victory, Gorbad Ironclawsnatched the Slland Runefang from the deadElectors cold hands

When the Grand Baron rode off to meet his fatewith his knights and infantry, Kaptain Reinervon Mecklenburg, of the towns militia, tookcommand of the town he used the remaining

stones from the deteriorated outer defences tostrengthen its inner defences is . VonMecklenburg also ordered the HonourableGuild of Bowyers and Fletchers to use theirconsiderable talents to equip the remainingtownsfolk with bows and arrows. In thismanner, the townsfolk of Adlerhorst hoped todefend their town against the likely greenskinonslaught.

The victorious Orc Warlord swept acrosscentral Slland, laying waste to everythingbefore him. When he reached the River Sllnear Geschburg, Gorbad divided his forces intwo. He led the largest contingent across the

    Sidebar: Battle for Pfeildorf

At the time of the Orc invasion, Adlerhorst had earned the nickname of Pfeildorf or Arrow Towndue to the political power of the Honourable Guild of Bowyers and Fletchers and the skill of itsnumerous members at crafting bows and arrows. In fact, their collective effort was an important anddependable part of the towns economy and it brought them renown in the southern Empire.

During the defence of Adlerhorst, the townsfolk fought bravely, firing arrows and hurling rocks at theOrc invaders. The Orcs, in turn, threw themselves at the hastily built-up defences with the expectationof breaking through to slaughter (and no doubt consume) the townsfolk. In between the attacks, theOrcs called out challenges and hurled insults at the people behind the barricades.

Stories telling of the courage and resourcefulness of the townsfolk during this dire time abound. Onesuch legend tells about the retreat of the Orcs from the town.

After the defenders succeeded in throwing back the latest attack, the Orc war chief, his lieutenant, anda shaman approached just out of bowshot in order to taunt the weakening defenders. Behind themwere the other Orc warriors screaming profanities and making obscene gestures in support of theirleaders.

Suddenly, a large hooded man dressed as a woodsman appeared among the tired fighters with a largebow. Silently, he notched three arrows and pulled back the bowstring. The arrows flew straight totheir respective targets, embedding themselves deep into the throats of each Orc leader. The threecollapsed and died instantly, momentarily stunning their rank and file as well as the townsfolk ofAdlerhorst.

Once awareness dawned, the dim-witted Orcs fled from the town as the defenders cheered. As thetownsfolk turned to give thanks for their deliverance, the mysterious stranger who slew the Orc leaderswas no where to be seen. Some believe the man to be an avatar of Taal, while others believe that thearcher was Sigmar himself.

The arrows were retrieved by the grateful townsfolk. One of the arrows was awarded to the temple ofSigmar and a second to the temple of Taal. The third which slew the Orc Warlord was hung abovethe throne in the great hall of Castle Adlerhorst.

across the river and rampaged along the westbank, destroying Wissenland in the process. The smaller portion of the greenskin army led by Snarlfang Bloodaxe continued on theeast bank with the intent of sackingAdlerhorst.

The battle for Adlerhorst was fierce and manyon both sides fell. Kaptain vonMecklenburgs choice of placing his defencealong the boundaries of the old hillfortensured that the townsfolk held the highground from which they fired their missilesinto the besieging horde. In the end, thegreenskins gave up their attack in order to joinGorbads destruction of Nuln

Pfeildorf RisingAfter the war, Wissenland absorbed what wasleft of the devastated Slland. The entireregion needed to rebuild after its ruin by theOrcs. Grand Baron von Durbheim, GrandCount Erich Adolphus von Meissen and hisimmediate heirs were killed in the Battle ofGrnburg in the Reikland. Newly electedNuln Emperor Dietrich II of the Reiklandelevated Ulrich von Liebewitz to the rank of

Grand Count of Nuln and Wissenland. Asone of his acts, von Liebewitz rewardedKaptain Reiner von Mecklenburg by grantinghim the title of Baron of Pfeildorf.

Under the rule of the von Mecklenburgs,Pfeildorf recovered from the ordeal andprospered. What remained of the old townwalls were torn down so that the town couldexpand to accommodate its growingpopulation. Many of the ruins of buildingsdestroyed in the siege were cleared away so

sewers could be constructed to carry thewastes from the hilltop area of old Alderhorstto the rivers via conduits beneath the lowerlying districts. The river ports werereconstructed as was the Hall of Justice andthe temples to Sigmar and Verena.

The building programme created the burdenof taxation and the period was marked byoccasional rioting by the populace. With theoutbreak of the Empire-wide Wizards War(1983 - 1991 I.C.), the population bore thetaxes to re-build the town walls in a relativelyco-operative manner. All desired someprotection in case of attack by outlawedwizards and their vile, daemonic servants.Luckily, most of the battles were fought farfrom Pfeildorf.

The Grand Barony of SudenlandIn the latter part of the 23rd century, the vonMecklenburg family had become wealthy byvirtue of income from their land holdings as

well as substantial tax revenue resulting froman increase in demand for Sudenland wool, clothing, and shoes. Less well known is thenumber of peasants the von Mecklenburgs andother Sudenlander nobles forcibly evacuatedfrom their villages earlier in the century inorder to demolish these settlements to createmore pastures for raising sheep. The noblespreferred to sell the wool for coin rather thancollect taxes in the form of produce.

Their prosperity provided the impetus for thevon Mecklenburgs to reach an accord withNuln Emperor Alban von Liebewitz whowas rumoured to be in great debt to both Nulnand Miragliano banking interests to separatethe old province of Slland from the moredominant Wissenland and establish it as a newElectoral province.

The province took the name of Sudenland inorder to sever any connection to the oldprovince of Slland. The split with

Wissenland was fairly amicable, by Imperialstandards, which is to say they did not go towar. Emperor Albans agreement was notaccepted in the North until Emperor Magnusthe Pious issued the Edict of Pfeildorf in2306. After over five hundred years under theruling house of Wissenland, Sudenlandbecame an Electoral province.

    Sudenland in the 26

    thCentury

Near the end of the 25th century rumoursbegan circulating of some misfortune affectingthe ruling von Mecklenburg family. Grand

Baron Johann von Mecklenburg was oftenabsent from the province for weeks on end.He also spent considerable time in Altdorf, which caused many of Pfeildorfers to feelslighted. In fact, Grand Baron vonMecklenburg had turned over theadministration of Sudenland to his cousin,Baroness Etelka Toppenheimer, and her hand-picked advisors. The Grand Baron had nodirect heirs and there were fouls rumourscirculating about the fate of his missingyounger brother.

In 2510, Grand Baron von Mecklenburgsuddenly abdicated his position of Elector with the Emperors apparent blessing andturned over the rule of the Sudenland to newlyelevated Grand Baroness Toppenheimer. Hedisappeared from public knowledge shortlyafterward.

Like von Mecklenburg, the Grand Baroness didnot have any direct heirs. Moreover, she did

not consider any of her other close relativesworthy to be named heir other than Baron OlafSektliebe, the adopted son of a distant cousinand one of whom she became quite fond(salacious gossip notwithstanding) beforesucceeding von Mecklenburg. In a grandceremony, Grand Baroness Toppenheimerdeclared Baron Sektliebe as her heir.

Growing tensions in the northern Empirebetween provincial rulers as well as the cultsof Sigmar and Ulric broke out into a brief war

in 2514. Though the battles were limited tothe north, the southern provinces providedsome support to the provinces nominallysupporting the Sigmarite faction. At the endof the conflict, Grand Countess Emmanuellevon Liebewitz re-exerted her authority as rulerof Wissenland while maintaining her Court inthe staatstadt of Nuln.

During this time, unsubstantiated stories beganto circulate about Baron Sektliebes immoralactivities. These deeds ranged from depraveddebauchery to worshipping proscribed gods totreasonous acts to witchcraft. These rumourssoon reached the Nuln Court.

In 2515, Grand Countess von Liebewitz movedswiftly. In what could be best described as acoup, the Grand Countess brought the matterbefore the assembled Electors. After muchargument and presentation of evidence, GrandBaroness Toppenheimer agreed to relinquishSudenlands Electoral status and the provincesindependence in order to retain her lands andtitle. As a condition of the agreement, an

Imperial charter was issued granting thePfeildorf (including its adjacent settlements)Freistadt status with the requirement that the to-be-formed town council pay a specified annualtribute to the Baroness as well as providetroops as needed.

When the news of the loss of Sudenlands morethan 200 years of independence reached town, the people pointed the blame for their loss ofstatus towards the now missing BaronSektliebe. They accepted the re-unificationwith Wissenland without much opposition, pragmatically preferring the least amount ofdisruption to their livelihoods.

The now reduced Baroness of Pfeildorfreturned from Altdorf and, in a simpleceremony, named another nephew, BaronMarkus Toppenheimer, as her new heir.

Life in Pfeildorf began to settle down. Theoutbreak of the Orc War of 2520 near Black

Fire Pass and the 2521-2522 invasion in thenorthern Empire and Kislev changed all that. Many young men joined local Pfeildorfregiments, raised to fight in these wars, only todie far from their homes and families. Theshortage of men was keenly felt in theaftermath of war, causing additional anxieties

among the people of the once capital ofSudenland.

    The People

As with other Sudenlanders, townsfolk inPfeildorf tend to be straightforward, friendlyfolk with little tolerance for those from thelarger cities who patronise them as poorcousins. Pfeildorfers value honesty in theirinteraction with others and have little patiencewith fast-talking charlatans, especially thosefrom other regions of the Empire. Even whenconfronted by individuals putting them ill atease, Pfeildorfers remain polite, but firm.

Many Pfeildorfers prefer practical styles to

their clothing, though the nobility havedeveloped a proclivity for the latest fashionsemanating from Nuln. Whatever finery theymay own is usually displayed during thevarious religious festivals observed in andabout Pfeildorf.

Historically, the Pfeildorf townsfolk have goodrelations with the Dwarf kingdoms in the Blackand Grey Mountain. The town does brisk tradewith their southern and western neighbours

with trade usually conducted along the RiverSll and Upper Reik.

A number of Dwarfs have lived in Pfeildorf formany generations, a presence stretching as farback as Sigmars time as Emperor. TheExpatriates Dwarfs remember the protectionafforded to their ancestors by the people ofPfeildorf during the Dark Persecution initiatedby Emperor Ludwig the Fat in 1013. Unlikeother cities and towns in the Empire, there areno Dwarf quarters or ghettos in Pfeildorf. The

Dwarfs live among the rest of the peoplethroughout the town.

There are few Elves who have called Pfeildorfhome over recent years. These have migratedfrom the Loren Forest in Bretonnia. Theygenerally arrive into the Empire by way of theMontdidier Pass near the small southern

Wissenland town of Kreutzhofen or the GreyLady Pass near bersreik in southern Reikland. In many cases, the Loren Elves are wanderersand seldom stay in Pfeildorf for more than afew years.

A small number of Halflings have settled inPfeildorf, though many prefer the surroundingvillages to the town itself. Like the residentDwarfs, many of Halflings have lived here forgenerations and have greater allegiance to thepeople in Pfeildorf than they do to theirbrethren living in the faraway Moot.

In the last century, a number of immigrantsfrom Tilea and Bretonnia, most of whom havecome from the Miragliano and Quenelles

regions respectively, have made their way tothe Pfeildorf area. . Many are farmers, artisansor merchants looking for a better life andconsider the Empire despite its recenttroubles as more tolerant and less oppressivethan their native lands.

Though tolerant, the typical Pfeildorfer tend toview the two groups of settlers through the lensof ill-informed rumours and stereotypes. Somestill perceive the Tileans as little more thanshifty thieves plotting to stab the unwary in theback and rob them. Bretonnians are viewedwith some contempt as discourteous idlers whosuffer from some misplaced sense ofsuperiority.

    Politics/ Government

Provincial/ Freistadt GovernmentAs the capital of Sudenland, Pfeildorf is theseat of the provincial government. GrandBaroness Toppenheimer does not actuallyparticipate in the mundane affairs ofgovernment, though she does attend meetingsof her Privy Council from time to time.Instead, she grants her councillors great latitudein running the affairs of state so that she canmaintain her lifestyle which is rather modestwhen compared to other Imperial nobility.

    10

The Privy Council consists of seven members, five of who are drawn from the great noblefamilies of Sudenland. Of the remaining two,one represents the collective interest ofPfeildorfs guilds and the other is elevated fromthe governmental bureaucracy (generally basedon merit rather than nepotism). The lastposition bares the title of Privy Secretary and iscurrently occupied by one Franz Walsinheim, adiligent man thoroughly obsessed with thepreservation of Toppenheimers rule, more soafter the incident involving Baron Sektliebeand the subsequent absorption of Sudenland byWissenland.

The change from capital city of an independentSudenland province to a Freistadt within a

larger Wissenland entity fundamentally alteredthe government of Pfeildorf. While BaronessToppenheimer still holds her Winter Court atCastle Alderhorst, she was obliged to move herPrivy Council and Summer Court to CastleMecklenburg outside the village of the samename.

A new city council was created to govern theFreistadt of Pfeildorf in 2515. As one wouldexpect from a town whose wealth derives fromthe wool and related trade, three seats of theeleven member council are selected from themasters of the leading guilds (see below),including the one selected to a seat in theBaroness Privy Council. One seat is set asidefor an elected alderman from each of the townssix districts. The last two seats are occupied by arepresentative of the established religions (set torotate on an annual basis between the Mrrian,Sigmarite, and Verenan churches: the cult ofTaal declined to participate) and the commanderof the towns garrison, currently Baron Ulrich

von Bernau. In addition, Franz Walsinheimattends the monthly council meeting in his roleof (non-voting) advisor and representative of theBaroness interests.

Foreign AffairsThe government of Pfeildorf remains onfriendly relations with its Imperial and Dwarfneighbours as well with the neighbouringprovinces. The provincial government

essentially works on the premise that it is in itsbest interest to not offend its trading partners, even those located on the far-flung easternfrontiers.

Several of Pfeildorfs trading partners havesmall embassies located within the town wall. The larger of these are trade missions for theDwarf kingdoms of Karak Hirn and KarakNorn and the Tilean city of Miragliano. Inaddition, trading companies from the Imperialprovinces of Averland and Wissenland as well

as Nuln have established a presence inPfeildorf. These embassies tend to support themercantile interests of their people as wellsustain their merchants who travel to theSudenlander town on business.

GuildsGuilds are also a major political force inPfeildorf. These regulate the economic issuesand rules of their respective trade throughout

Sudenland. The guilds control their membersin other parts of the province through use ofsmaller outposts in Geschburg, Kroppenleben, and Steingart.

The most influential of the Pfeildorf guilds arethe Shearers, Tailors and Weavers, Tanners, and Cobblers, who also happened to be theones involved with the major portion of thetowns exports. The four guilds co-operatewell in most areas as they recognise that unitybrings a competitive advantage and higher

profit. On an one-year rotational basis, aGuildmaster from of these major guilds holdsthe chair of the Guilders Council as well as amember of the Baroness Privy Council.

Other guilds are important to Pfeildorf andmake certain that the four major guildsrepresent their respective interests as well.

These guilds include the Artisans (a mix bagof craftsman not covered by other guilds),Bowyers and Fletchers, Builders', Rivermen,Smiths, Stevedores', Teamsters', and Vintners.

EconomicsSudenland is mostly an agricultural province, producing raw material, foodstuffs, and winefor trade to other provinces and the nearbyDwarf kingdoms. In return, Sudenland townsimport finished goods. Some of the rawmaterial particularly wool and sheepskin makes its way to Pfeildorf, where these areturned into other products for trade.

The Pfeildorf clothing industry (weavers and

tailors) uses the high-quality Sudenland wool toproduce articles of clothing cloaks, tunics andtrousers that are in high demand throughoutthe Empire. The reputation of Pfeildorf woolgarments were such that, after the war in 2514devastated the northern provinces, tradeagreements were signed with representativesfrom Middenheim for winter uniforms for theKnights Panther and the other elite units of theGrafs army. Similar agreements were reachedwith the Grand Prince of Ostland, as well with

several Knightly Orders. In addition to wool clothing, the reputation ofPfeildorfs leather goods is also rising.Sheepskin shoes have become the rage in theNuln high society. Moreover, many of thecolleges of Magic and a number of the religioushouses in the southern Empire prefer Pfeildorfvellum for their scrolls and books.

In contrast to the aforementioned tradeproducts, the demand for the products

manufactured by the members of Bowyers andFletchers Guild have declined with thegrowing popularity of handguns in the variousprovincial armies.

Pfeildorf ale tends to be locally brewed andonly traded in the immediate area. Many ofthese breweries reprocess the strong beer mash

used in creating their higher quality brew toproduce a high quantity of the weak beer that iswidely and cheaply sold in the taverns (afterall, the water from the rivers is ratherunhealthy).

In recent years, one particular master brewer Torsten Ecclestein, owner of the SchwarzbrunnBrewery has been able to drastically increasehis production of his trademark pilsner whilekeeping costs down. This effort has resulted incomplaints being filed with the GuildersCouncil by Herr Ecclesteins competitorsclaiming unfair advantage. Uncertain ofwhether his bribes to the Council will have thedesired effect, Herr Ecclestein has begun theprocess of buying taverns in Pfeildorf and the

surrounding area (under the company name ofEcclestein Hostelries of Pfeildorf) in order toexclusively sell the ales and weak beer hebrews.

The wine merchants in Pfeildorf aggressivelypromote not only the wines produced by localvintners, but also act as middlemen in the tradeof Sudenlands other wines with the cities tothe north along the River Reik. Some of themore notable wines include WittenhausenZweigelt, Sudenland Gewrztraminer, RhyasRuby Delight, and Althausen Reisling.

Crime/LawLike any other place in the Empire, Pfeildorfhas its share of criminal enterprises as well aslaws that attempt to curtail illegal activities ordeeds putting public order and safety at risk.

Law and OrderThe main objectives for the Guild ofLamplighters and Watchmen are to: (1) ensurethat all street lamps in the town are lit withinone hour of sunset and extinguished at dawn;(2) call out the hours of the night and the stateof their patrol (one oclock and all is well);and (3) take into custody or spot fine anyonedisturbing the public peace.

Several patrols of five to eight men areassigned to the solidly-built Watch barrackslocated in each district. Several small holdingcells have been constructed beneath thesestone buildings. Disturbers of the peace andminor violators may be levied a spot fine(anywhere from 5 shillings to 2 GCS) or keptin these cells overnight until a properpunishment can be determined (usually five toten lashes to be publicly administered orseveral days in the stocks outside the gates ofPfeildorf). Those accused of more seriouscrimes wait in the Barrack cells until anarmed detachment of guards escort them to St.Quintus Prison.

Located in the Mrrsfeld district, St. QuintusPrison was original built in the 19 th century asa fortress to defend the southern approachesto the town. When the town walls wererebuilt in the late 20th century, the fortresswas converted into a prison for enemies of thestate as well as their accomplices andservants. The office of warden of St. QuintusPrison is an inherited position passing fromfather to younger son and falling under thepurview of the Privy Secretary. The currentoffice holder is Baron Sigismund vonFraunhofer, a no-nonsense disciplinarian whospecialises in breaking obstinate criminals andtraitors.

When the time of their trial is at land, theaccused is brought by armed escort to the Hallof Justice. Word is spread when one of themore infamous criminals is scheduled to maketheir final trip by mule-pulled cart. This noticeprovides the townsfolk plenty of time find theirplace on the procession route so they can pelt

the criminal with rotten fruit and vegetables inaddition to hurling insults and making obscenegestures.

In order to prevent disruptions, attendance atthe courtrooms is limited to injured parties, those who can prove a legitimate interest, and apresiding magistrate. Jury trials are the most

common for most trials, consisting of a panel ofnine jurors. If the crime is particularly heinous(e.g., rape, sedition, impersonating a noble, premeditated murder), three magistrates will sitin judgment instead of empanelling a jury). When a guilty verdict is reached, a town crierwill announce the news outside the Hall in theAlttorplatz before the convicted is returned toSt. Quintus. If an execution is warranted, thenthe scaffolding is erected in the middle of theAlttorplatz. The construction of the structure isindicative of whether the punishment will be asimple hanging, beheading, or drawing andquartering. The mood at the time of anexecution is rather festive.

Other punishments are conducted behind the

walls of the prison, ranging from the removalsof the hands of thieves to the interrogation(torture) of those considered enemies of thestate. In addition, there are certain politicalprisoners such as agitators, anarchists, anddemagogues who simply disappear within thecold, dank labyrinth of cells beneath St.Quintus.

Guild and Ecclesiastical Courts also exist inPfeildorf. The former is situated in thebasement of the Sudenland Guildhouse. Trialsinvolving guild members are adjudicated overby a tribunal of three appointed legates of theGuilders Council. Those found guilty canexpect punishments in the range of a fine of 2-5GCs for minor violations to a suspension ofpracticing ones craft for a limited duration toexpulsion from the Guild and town for grossviolations of Guild Laws. In some cases, theaccused may be turned over for trial to the Hallof Justice.

Crimes committed by the various priesthoodsare never referred to the Hall of Justices. TheEcclesiastical Courts retain full jurisdictionover their members. All trials are conducted insecret beneath the Temple to Verena presidedover by representatives of the cults of Verena,Sigmar, Mrr, and Taal. In addition, theEcclesiastical Courts holds the writ of authority

to bring any accused of dark witchcraft, necromancy, or demonology before them toanswer for their crimes against the Empire andHumanity. Any found guilty are rarely heardfrom again.

Criminal MindsAs with any of the large Imperial towns andcities, Pfeildorf suffers from crime rangingfrom petty robbery to organised criminal gangs. In fact, any newly arrived thief or cut-throatlooking to set up shop in the Sudenland capitalwould be well-advised to join one of the gangsbefore attempting any job. The first warning isfor courtesy, but the second is likely to involvebodily harm for independent operators.

The two largest gangs are the Heinkel andDornier families. Both are currently engagedin an uneasy truce since the last eruption ofwarfare in 2510 weakened the two familiesconsiderably. A third organisation, theLuciano-Lansky gang from Wissenburg, havebeen making inroads in drug, prostitution, andsmuggling rackets.

The Heinkel family is led by its matriarch,

Grandmother Agnes, a hard-edge woman in herearly 60s. She lost her husband, Otto, and threeof her four sons in the war against the Dornierorganisation as well as other family members.Emmerich Heinkel is a calculating, ruthlessman and heir apparent who made his mark inthe familys protection racket. There arerumours that he is looking for a means to retire(remove, if need be) his mother so he canfinally crush the Dornier family. The Heinkelfamilys operations are centred in theReikhafen and Schwarzwache districts.

Claudius Dornier is the leader of his crimefamily. In his mid-50s, Claudius is a survivor. His family was able to fight off the onslaughtfrom the Heinkel family although it cost himhis oldest son and youngest daughter. Claudiusloathes the Heinkels and is currently recruitingnew members for the next war. Claudius

surviving son, Karl, had aspirations to join theChurch of Sigmar, but these have been derailedas his father prepares for war. The Dornierorganisation operates in the Neusdentor andSllhafen districts.

As a result of their mutual hatred and distrust, the Heinkel and Dornier families seem ratheroblivious to the expansion of the Luciano-Lansky gang into their turf. The new criminalenterprise as been careful in its business, preferring to maintain a low profile so as toavoid being forced to choose sides. Led inPfeildorf by the charismatic Bugsy Spengler,a Reiklander from Auerswald, the Luciano-Lansky gang is based in the Mrrsfeld districtwhere is can act as a intermediary to the two

larger gangs while carefully playing one offagainst the other. The Luciano-Lansky gangmust tread carefully lest they exposethemselves as the greater threat and cause thetwo families to unite against the commonenemy.

ReligionPfeildorfers are a devout people. The townhosts multiple shrines, chapels, and temples to

all the recognised gods of the Empire, as wellas local gods and spirits. Many of the townsfolkspend a few minutes of each day visiting atemple or shrine, working their way through thegods as need requires.

Compared to the other official cults, the Churchof Sigmar has special prominence in Pfeildorfand the nearby settlements along the UpperReik. Many of the local establishments claimthat Sigmar slept, ate, or stopped for a breatheron the very site where they stand when he led

the united tribes against the greenskin hordes inthe Battle of Black Fire Pass or on hisvictorious return to the Unberogen lands alongthe Reik. If half the claims were true, Sigmarand his followers would have travelled lessthan a mile a day.

Taal and Rhya remain popular deities as thetwo represent the nearby rural and wildnessareas. Mrr and Verena are also worshipped inPfeildorf, as well as their divine daughters,Myrmidia and Shallya. Within the town wallsof Pfeildorf, the cult of Shallya has assumedmany of the functions (e.g., child birth, healing, and nurturing) normally associated with thecult of Rhya in the countryside.

Pfeildorf is also one of the few places in thesouthern Empire which still worships the oldsun god, Oermath and his wife the EarthMother (sometimes referred to as Ishernos). Ashrine to the two is housed within the temple ofTaal and Rhya, the first children of the two eldergods. During the Sonnstill celebration, a story is

performed that tells of the falling out betweenOermath and the Earth Mother over the conductof a war against otherworldly invaders and theresulting rise of Taal, Rhya, and Ulric. The playis performed without dialogue, but to theaccompaniment of music. The High Priest ofTaal narrates the story to the audience.

In addition, several lesser gods from Tilea havegrown in popularity in the Pfeildorf region inthe past century. The worship of Deanosus(God of Wine, Vineyards, and Revelry) hasbecome fairly popular in the wine-growingregions, especially among the Tilean migrs.Panasia (Goddess of Music, Poetry, and theArts) is revered among the higher class andentertainers of Pfeildorf. Before Johann vonMecklenburg stepped aside, the Grand Baronled a ceremony dedicated a shrine to the Tileangoddess within the Temple of Verena. Aroundthat same time, the Guilders Council dedicateda shrine within the Guildhall to Phaestos (Godof Crafts and Smiths).

Pfeildorf is also home to several local godswhose worship date far back to the time beforethe birth of Sigmar. One of the (many)daughters of Taal and Rhya, Nemieth is thegoddess of the confluence of the Rivers Slland Upper Reik. The ceremony in her honouron her holy day is put a faint echo of a darker

rite perform in the distant past. These days, ayoung man with the ability to swim plungesinto the heart of the cold confluence onMitterfrhl, swims three times in a circle beforeswimming up the River Sll to the quays ofSllhafen. During the days of the Alderhorsthillfort, the young man would have beendrowned in sacrifice to the goddess.

Another local deity is Haenoth, harbinger of thenorth wind and divine son of Ulric and anorthern forest spirit named Bythada. Of thevarious ceremonies that take place on 17Nachgeheim, one in particular is dedicated toHaenoth and has the goal of pleading with thegod to turn Ulrics wintry fury from them. Atall 50-foot tower of wood is built in the

common located south of the village ofSchaffenhof upon which young men of nervetie a rope on their ankle and leap off the tower. The rope is just long enough to stop the plungebefore the jumper shatters his skull upon theground. Though fatal accidents do occuroccasionally, this ceremony is less bloody thanthe ancient rite of hurling a selected young man(usually from an enemy tribe) off the hilltopand to his death in Upper Reik below.

Maianda is the goddess of the domesticatedanimals, pastures and the nearby Wilden Hills. She is the daughter of Rhya and an ancient forestspirit whose name has been lost in time, thoughhe is referred to as the Lord of Aurochs. She isworshipped on 17 Nachexen the day whensheep, cattle, and other livestock are taken topasture and Mittherbst the day of slaughterand preparation for the wintering of livestock. The celebration on 17 Nachexen is marked by ayoung girl selected to kiss a chosen newbornupon the forehead. If the young creature calmly

receives the kiss, then the act is taken as a portentof good fortune for the health of the flock orherd. Should the young creature resist or panic, then a sacrifice of the creature is required to thegoddess lest the celebration is marked as an illomen of things to come. In the distant past, thegirl might have been sacrificed as well. TheMittherbst ceremony follows the old tradition of

TransportationTwo coaching lines run regular service fromPfeildorf. The first is Sigmars Carriage, whichtravels along the Upper Reik from its terminusat the Inn of Sigmars Rest in the village ofSchaffenhof to the town of Steingart on theRiver Oggel. The other coaching line is WhiteHart Coaches which has the monopoly of theroute to Geschburg upriver on the Sll. TheWhite Hart has its terminus at the Inn of theFox and the Hound in the village ofGerechtfeld. Coach traffic is not permitted

within the town walls of Pfeildorf, so arrivingpassengers must make the short walk from thecoach lines respective end to wait for entry atthe town gates.

Due to their respective monopolies, the twocoaching companies charge a bit more than thestandard daily rate of travel for each passenger. If the coach is full, limited seating on top (for 1or 2 additional travellers) is sometimesavailable for a slightly lesser charge. The

coaches are generally sturdy enough to makethe journey from start to end, but can breakdown from time to time as their maintenance isnot exactly top-notch. There are persistentrumours that the Four Seasons coaching line ofthe Reikland is planning to expand to the

Sudenland, but nothing has come of thisspeculation so far.

There are no equivalent company of rivertransports on either River Sll or the UpperReik upriver from Pfeildorf. Anyone preferringto travel on these rivers can do so bynegotiating with the traders and boatmen whomake their living on the rivers. As river travelis considered much safer than by road, theprices are generally higher than coach, thoughthe passenger is only permitted to sleep on deckor in the hold with cargo and vermin. Captainswho have built accommodations for possiblepassengers are able to demand even higherfees. Most boat captains usually take no morethan 2 passengers at any one time to ensure that

any unruly fares can be quickly subdued andtossed overboard by the captains men.

The Reikrunner Ferrying Company waschartered in 2503 to provide ferry service fromthe Inn of the Twin Eagles in the Reikhafendistrict to Nuln downriver. The fare is steeperthan travelling on the river barges plying theUpper Reik, but well-to-do travellers canjourney to and from Nuln in relative luxury.

For the less fortunate, travelling to and fromPfeildorf in any other direction must be doneon foot. Any wishing to pass through Averlandor Wissenland must take a ferry from one ofPfeildorfs harbours and cross to the other sideof the river where narrow footpaths can befound.

    Entering Pfeildorf

There are five gates entering Pfeildorf, eachnamed for the districts to which they leadwithin the town walls. Those who brave theroads leading to Pfeildorf enter through eitherthe Neusden (from the south) orSchwarzwache (east) Gates. Travellers

arriving by river either pass through theReikhafen or Sllhafen Gates. The lines arefairly long as each person entering the city isassessed a gate tax of 5 shillings per leg.Wagons carrying goods to Pfeildorf are placedin caravanserais and their cargo off-loaded by

stevedores and carried to nearby warehouses bythe teamsters. Merchandise from boats isplaced in warehouses near the docks where theboats are moored.

Some travellers actually have papers ormedallions that exempt them from the gate tax, including priests and agents of recognised cults(Sigmar, Verena, Mrr, Taal, Rhya, Ulric, andShallya), members of the major Pfeildorfguilds, nobility, and any person granted specialprivilege in the name of the Emperor or GrandBaroness of Sudenland (after 2515, the GrandCountess of Wissenland and Nuln). Scribesand excisemen assigned to gate duty mustverify the status of the exempt individuals aswell as record and collect the taxes from those

who must pay. A team of four to six guardsenforce the law as well as collect any illegalweapons and armour. As in most Imperialcities and towns, visitors are only allowed one

hand weapon and dagger and may wear eitherleather armour or a mail shirt beneath a tunic.Anything other than these permitted items isconfiscated (unless the individual has specificauthorization given by the proper cityauthority) and the bearer given a receipt fortheir armour and weapons, which they cancollect once they leave the town.

The Mrrsfeld Gate is the entrance generallyused by funeral processions, individualsheading to the cemetery to pay their respects tothe dead, or members of the Mourners' Guild.Traffic through this gate is the lightest inPfeildorf and the contingent manning thispassage is about half as that at the other gates.

The gates of Pfeildorf are closed at night, anytime in the first hour or two after the sunhas set, and remain closed until dawn.

    Districts of Pfeildorf

Like many of the large towns and cities in theEmpire, Pfeildorf is divided into separate

administrative districts, within which aresmaller neighbourhoods.

The frequency of Watch patrols vary by districtwith the most regular occurring in theAlderhorst district. The number of patrolslessen the further away a district is from the hillthough the number of Watch in a patrolincreases. Watch patrols consist of two to sixmen led by a Sergeant.

    Alderhorst

Alderhorst is the oldest district and the mostaffluent in the city. It covers the area that oncecomprised the ancient hillfort and adjacentslopes. Many of the buildings have cisterns tocapture rainwater and reduce the need to haul

water from the wells near the bottom of the hill.In 2325 I.C., engineers from Nuln oversaw the

building of a sewer system beneath theAlderhorst district. The engineers had to workaround the private reservoirs and wells on thelower slopes in an effort to avoid polluting thewater supply.

From its lofty perch atop the site of the ancienthall of the hillfort, Castle Alderhorst (1)dominates the town. It is the official residenceof the Grand Baroness Toppenheimer. She isin residence whenever the provincial (which is

the same as the baronial) flag is raised abovethe main gateway. In her absence, her steward Freiherr Gabriel Ludendorff andCommander Baron Ulrich von Bernau ensurethat the castle staff and guard detail continue toperform their duties. Castle Alderhorst is alsothe site of an Imperial mint as Pfeildorf ischartered to produce silver shillings using

silver ingots imported from the Grey Mountains by way of Meissen.

The ancient Tower of Nemieth (2) named forthe local goddess stands high above theconfluence of the Rivers Sll and Upper Reik.A signal light on top of the tower warns anydaring to sail at night of the danger from therocks at the foot of the cliff. In addition, thetower is said to be haunted by a ghost of ayoung woman who was murdered manycenturies before by Grand Baron Wolfgang vonDurbheim when she refused his advances.

Schloss Strasse (a) is the main thoroughfare ofthe district descending from Castle Alderhorstdownhill to Alttorplatz. The roadway is more

than two carts wide as it was designed toenable the movement of troops from the castleto wall.

The octagonal Grand Church of Sigmar (3) isthe largest temple to the Empires patron deityin the River Sll basin and the seat of theLector of Sudenland. The southern face of thedome is inlaid in gold strips forming the gaudyshape of a giant hammer when reflecting thelight of the sun. There is a fifteen foot statue ofSigmar welcoming those to his service with hisarms and hands invitingly opened positionedbehind the high altar. As typical for the cult, the high altar is positioned towards thedirection of the Dwarfhold of Karaz-a-Karak.Deep beneath the Church are cells where thoseaccused of ecclesiastic crimes are held awaitingtrial.

Across the Church of Sigmar stands thecolonnaded Temple of Verena (4), beneathwhich are the Ecclesiastical Courts. A tunnel

connects the Courts to the cells where prisonersare kept to minimize any chance of escape. The Temple has a modest library covering awide range of topics, especially local history.Anyone wishing access to this library must besomeone in good standing with the cult anddonate 1 GC for every four hours spent withinthe collection. Many books are chained with

the intent of discouraging theft and scrolls canonly be read with a member of the temple inattendance.

Tempelplatz (b) is situated between the twolargest temples in the Alderhorst district. Thesquare is fairly crowded before and afterservices on the various holy days. Duringtimes of war, troops are mustered here in orderto receive Sigmars blessing before heading offto war.

The Inn of the Gilded Seat (5) caters to a highclass clientele which includes nobility, nouveauriche, and influential clergy. Dame JulianeDamrosch runs an immaculate establishment

with bouncers to ensure any riff-raff is kept faraway from her patrons. The fare here isexcellent with the Halfling chef SamuelBranmuffin in control of the kitchen andusually runs about twice the cost of meals onecan find in other, more modest taverns. Thewine list includes the best Sudenlander wine aswell as some of the more expensive vintagesfrom Averland, Wissenland and Reikland.

As a devotee of the goddess Panasia, BaronessIsabella von Huttenestablished the Baron vonHutten Conservatory (6) in honour of her latehusband in 2508. The building was the greatlyrenovated by the famed Nuln architect, OttoWagner. Moreover, the Baroness arranged forthe inclusion of a shrine dedicated to theGoddess of Music, Poetry, and the Arts nearthe entrance. A perfectionist by trade andtaskmaster, Ludwig Bach is the current Masterof the Conservatory. He is rather choosy as towho he admits to the school: those who exhibita gift for music and come from affluent

families. In order to keep the patrons pleased, the Conservatory holds performances duringthe evenings on the first and third Festag everymonth. The price of admission is not cheap.

The Alttorplatz (c) is the largest square inPfeildorf and the site of its market (held everyMarktag and Festag) as well as execution of

those convicted of high crimes. The highlypopular and well-attended executions (referredto as paying Mrrs tax) usually occur on thethird Aubentag of each month. The name ofthe large square comes from the fact that it wasonce the site of the old south gate of Pfeildorfand the place where legend says the mysteriousarcher slew the three Orc leaders. There is alarge fountain in the centre of the square and anumber of wells throughout.

The Hall of Guilds (7) is a large three-storiedbuilding with its external walls painted in lightblue (affectionately known as Big Blue) andthe place where the business of Pfeildorf isconducted. The reach of the Guildmastersextends beyond the towns limits and

influences trade throughout the province. EachGuild has its own set of offices within the largebuilding, the most important of which arelocated on the ground floor. Petitioners arepermitted to enter the building on the thirdAubentag of each month. Otherwise, membersof the various Guilds are allowed to enter theGuildhouse at anytime so long as they do so forbusiness purposes. The Guildhouse employs itsown militia who are armed with a spear andwearing a leather jerkin. The militiamen alsowear a red and white armband on the left armto distinguish them from the Watch. The GuildCourts can be found in the basement near theholding cells for prisoners awaiting transfer toSt. Quintus Prison or Hirtinbrunnen DebtorPrison.

A statue of the goddess Verena holding theSword of Justice aloft stands in the entrance ofthe colonnaded Hall of Justice (8). Given theinfluence of the cult at the courts, the Halllooks a lot like the Temple of Verena on the

hill. The three-storied white-washed stonebuilding holds several courtrooms as well asoffices for the magistrates and the HonourableGuild of Legalists.

The Nuln Embassy (9) was recently renovatedby Otto Wagner at the expense of GrandCountess von Liebewitz of Nuln. The embassy

staff deals with issues of importance to theCity-State, mostly cultural ties, as well asintelligence. A trade office is also attached tothe embassy to ensure the interests of the Nulnmerchants are addressed. A senior member ofthe Grand Countess secret police theGeheimwchter maintains a position amongthe staff, sending periodic reports to hissuperiors. When Sudenland was againabsorbed by Wissenland in 2515, the buildingwas renamed Nuln House though itsambassador, Baron Arnold von Graz, remainedat his post. Though still retaining much of themuscular physique of his youth, the gapped-tooth Baron von Graz has recently begun toexert the Grand Countess influence oversecurity matters, which will soon put him at

    odds with Franz Walsinheim.

The solidly built Embassy of the DwarfKingdoms (10) is a two-storied architecturaleye-sore. Its dark-grey stone construction andnarrow windows gives the building the look ofa besieged fortress. What makes the buildingeven more odd is that the Dwarfs of Pfeildorfeasily live alongside the Humans. Unlike otherlarge towns and cities in the Empire, there areno distinct Dwarf quarters in Pfeildorf. It canbe said that the design of the building is atestament to the mindset of the Dwarfkingdoms in the mountains and offers acontrast to the local Expatriate Dwarfcommunity. Gottri Goldfinder represents thetrading interests of Karak Hirn and ZamnilSharpblade speaks for Karak Norn. There is nooutward competition between the ambassadorsor their respective Dwarfholds. In fact, bothambassadors frequent the Hammer and Anviltavern in the Neusdentor district after hours.

The Wandering Troupe Theatre (11) wasbuilt at the turn of the century under thepatronage of Grand Baron Johann vonMecklenburg in an attempt to enhance thesocial life of Pfeildorf. The Grand Baron wasable to lure the playwright Arthur Schnitzler known for his risqu plays from Nuln. Later, the renowned actress and beauty Katarina

Schratt joined the theatre, some said to escapethe possible vengeance of Grand Countess vonLiebewitz who is not known to take kindly toany competition.

SllhafenThe Sllhafen is one of the busier districts inPfeildorf as most of the towns trade is carriedby boats along the River Sll and Upper Reik. The district encompasses an area on both sidesof the western wall and the two are separatedonce the gate is closed for the night. Watchpatrols are infrequent in the dock area afterdark, though large patrol occasionally ventureforth through a nearby postern gate to keepsome order. Smugglers and other low-life

characters come out at night to conduct theirbusiness, while most law-abiding folk staybehind locked doors so as to avoid beingcaught up in illicit activity.

The Inn of the Laughing Trout (12) is thelargest inn on the Sllhafen docks and a placewhere business legal or otherwise isconducted. There are several booths in thecommon room reserved for privateconversations at the cost of 1 GC per hour,

payable in advance. Leberecht and AliciaBhren run a reputable establishment andemploy Lorenz and Reinhold Wittig asbouncers to ensure that any trouble is dealt withquickly. The fare is reasonably good and theDwarf cook, Wulfstan Puck, can also becounted on to assist the bouncers when such aneed arises. The Bhrens still produce theirown lager, but have recently reached a dealwith Schwarzbrunn Brewery to carry thatestablishments Dark Bitter and Pilsner brews.

Altmauer Strasse West (d) is the main streetconnecting the Sllhafen docks to theAlttorplatz. Traffic on this road is usuallyheavy with goods being transported to thecentre of town as well as people engaged intheir own personal business. The road followsthe course of the ancient wall which was torndown to make room for the expansion of

Pfeildorf. Many buildings along the streetssouth side incorporate portions of the old wall.

The Hospice of the White Dove - Cult ofShallya (13) is a large building near theSllhafen Gate and serves the poor with a soupkitchen and infirmary. Priestess SelenaRosenburg is in charge of the Hospice. She hasdirected her staff of three junior priestesses andeleven lay assistants to make sure that anyoneof means staying in the Hospice provide amonetary contribution to fund its mission.Should someone refuse, the Hospice willprovide no further services though they do notevict the offender. A small chapel dedicated toShallya is located at the west entrance.

A marvel of northern Tilean architecture,Miragliano House (14) is the trade mission ofthe Tilean city-state of Miragliano and privatefiefdom of Baron Marco di Campogrotta, asuave rake who is rumoured to be a deadlyduellist as well as accomplished womaniser. Incontrast, the Barons secretary, Paolo Ravenna,is a dour, older man who seems moreconcerned with keeping track of the Tileanswho have trade connections within or passthrough Pfeildorf. Unknown to even the Baron,Ravenna is a member of the Cacciabores dell'Ombra, the dreaded Assassins of Miragliano. Itis his task to arrange for the accidents thatseem to befall certain exiles and criminals fromnorthern Tilea. The mission employs severalTilean bodyguards to maintain its security.

The places of entertainment gaming houses, brothels, and drug dens that line theRotlaterne Strasse (e) are some of the bestknown and notorious in Pfeildorf.

One of these, the Red Rooster Cabaret andCasino (15) is run by Madame JeanneToulouse of Quellenes and featuresperformance by dancing girls every Festag andWellentag night. Admission is fairly high-priced to keep out all but the well-connectedand moneyed gentry. Three large bodyguardsmake sure that anyone getting out of hand is

The Cavern (16) is a place for those who loveblood sports, such as pit fighting, bear-baiting,or cock fighting. Bruno Grimms forefatherssecured a charter many generations ago thatallow the Cavern to continue to operate whilemost other such establishments have been shutdown by a more enlightened population. Most patrons are those who would not beallowed anywhere near polite company, butthey surprisingly behave themselves within thenorms of the Cavern. After all, the huge andmuscular Bruno Grimm still looks like he canstill handle himself quite well in the Pit.

The Silberhammer House (17) was the centreof the Wissenland mission until the annexationof Sudenland. Klemens Stadion continued inhis position as trade ambassador when theMeissen Society of Silversmiths purchased thebuilding from the Merchants Guild ofWissenburg in 2515. The goal of theSilversmiths is to reach an exclusive tradeaccord with the small Jewellers Guild ofPfeildorf.

    Neusdentor

The Neusdentor is one of the newer districtsin Pfeildorf, having grown from a smallsettlement outside the original town wall. Thedistrict is home to many craftsmen, theirfamilies, and small shops. As such, the districtis fairly quiet at night with members of theGuild militia augmenting the Watch patrols.

The Gerechtfeld Strasse (f) is the mainthoroughfare cutting through the heart of thedistrict and connecting Neusden Gate toAlttorplatz. Various shops mostly in thetanner, cobbler, and metalcraft trade line thisstreet along with many taverns serving the localresidents.

For those looking for a variety of good ale orbeer, the Hammer and Anvil Inn (18) is theplace to be. The inn is one of the few boardinghomes found in Neusdentor and located on aside street a short distance from GerechtfeldStrasse. Noted for its utilitarian furnishings, the inn is run by Anotok and Brita Mantekssonand their two sons, Gunni and Zamnil. TheDwarfs have hired a Tilean cook, LuigiMondavi from Tobaro, to add some flair to theinns offerings and complement the inns ownbrew: Fire Red Ale, Mantek Dark Bitter, GoldLager, and Anvil Malt Brew. Even the weakbeer is above average in taste and its price ishigher than similar beers served in otherestablishments. Despite a number of offers,Anotok refuses to market his brews to other

taverns and inns, much to the relief ofSchwarzbrunn Brewery.

The Kommission of Public Works (19) isresponsible for the various projects commissionby the Guilders Council, which includes thehiring and oversight of skilled craftsmen andunskilled labourers required by the specificproject. The current commission is FritzDiesel, a trained engineer formerly from Nuln. The reserved and humourless commissioner hasbeen at his job for over a decade, working longhours and closely managing his foursubordinates. There is some unconfirmedsuspicion among his detractors that Herr Dieselmay be involved with the sacrifice of smallanimals and perhaps the occasional child asan offering to the gods to ensure the successfulcompletion of an undertaking. As yet noevidence has been obtained to prove suchrumours.

On every fourth Wellentag of the month,

Schumacherplatz (g) holds a craft faire wherelocal artisans can sell their wares, particularlyfootwear and leather goods. The market is wellattended by merchants who specialise in theexport of such merchandise to other parts of theEmpire. Several food and drink stands are setup to sell refreshments to the buyers andsellers. Unfortunately, pick pockets and

Hirtinbrunnen Debtor Prison (20) is theplace where many who are unable to meet theirfinancial obligations often find themselvesserving time. Ever creative, Warden HannesBrger has found a means to supplement hismeagre income by selling privileges to thoseprisoners who come from well-connectedfamilies. Generally speaking, those without theability to obtain money for bribes can expect tobe harshly treated and confined to those mostcrowded and foul-smelly cells. Affluentconvicts can receive better treatment, food, andother amenities so long as they can arrange forthe Warden to be paid an amount equal to the

conditions under which they wish to beincarcerated. Needless to say, Warden Brgerdoes not extend credit to inmates.

    Mrrsfeld

The name of the district comes from the openarea that long ago existed between the town ofPfeildorf and the Garden of Mrr. It was alsothe area where scholars say the Orc horde set

their camp during the Battle of Pfeildorf in the18th century. The soil conditions in the area arerather poor, likely from the corruption of thegreenskin encampment. When the townexpanded past the old tower (and now prison),the poor of the town gravitated to the area.

As the link between the execution scaffolds ofAlttorplatz and the Gardens of Mrr with St.Quintus Prison along the way, Ewigruhe Weg(h) is a very busy street. Large crowds line theway every third Aubentag to jeer and follow

the convicted on their way to execution. A feweven follow the executed to their burial in thepauper area outside the cemetery.

Watch patrols in this district are ratherinfrequent, especially in the area surroundingthe Mourners Guild. There is a level ofsuperstition among the Watch that crossing the

path of a black-clothed Mourner can lead to about of sickness or ill luck.

Stags Leap (21) is a popular drinking hole forthe clerks, scribes, and other low-end positionswithin the various establishments in theAlttorplatz. The tavern is one of the recentpurchases made by Ecclestein Hostelries. Theprevious owners, Wenzel and Alexa Mersch, stayed on as part of the agreement to manageStags Leap. As part of the deal, Wenzlsrecipe for his Dark Lager became the propertyof Schwarzbrunn Breweries and he waspermitted to continue selling his creation alongwith the other Schwarzbrunn ales and beer.

The grim stone-walled St. Quintus Prison (22)

dominates the smaller neighbouring buildingsin Mrrsfeld. The former defensive tower isnamed after the patron saint of wayward soulsand houses the most dangerous of criminals, most of whom only spend a short timeincarcerated before their execution. WardenLudolf Bosch runs the facility with an iron and some say sadistic hand, ensuring that theinmates behave themselves. Troublemakers aretypically beaten by the guards and dumped intoa small dank cell in the underground layers ofthe prison. During periods of heavy rains, thecells on the lowest levels are known to flood. When such occurs, prisoners at this level arenot necessary evacuated to safety. Moreover, those accused of treason or other high crimesmay find themselves at the tender mercies ofTheobald Grimm, the Chief Interrogator andTorturer of St. Quintus.

Near the prison is the Pfeildorf charterhouse ofthe Mourners Guild (23). Visiting dignitariesfrom the cult of Mrr as well as the occasional

Black Guard or Raven Knight can find lodgingwithin the charterhouse. Guildmaster Lukasvon Schiller sees to the comfort of the visitorsthrough his staff as well as representing theMrrian church in dealings with the PrivyCouncil and, more recently, the city councilThe charterhouse acts as the centre of guild

Manfelds Funeral Parlour (24) is a long-time fixture in Pfeildorf, though it was oncelocated outside the town walls. Despite hishuman name, Josef Manfeld and his familytrace their roots to a time when Manfeldsancestors immigrated from Karak Hirn somesay as a result of a clan feud and settled inAlderhorst in the early years of SigmarsEmpire. Like his forefathers, Josef is amember of the Mourners Guild and hasinherited his position as funeral director. Heoversees funeral arrangements, the constructionof coffins, and carving of headstones. Josef hasalso succeeded his late father as the priest of

the Dwarf Ancestor God Gazul, Lord of theUnderearth.. As part of his responsibilities,Josef maintains a shrine to the Dwarf AncestorGods in a small room in the back. Manfeldstwo sons Dirk and Baldur provide whateverassistance he requires.

Members of the Mourners Guild and Mrrianclergy patronise Lifes Last Chance Tavern(25) near Mrrsfeld Gate. The establishment isrun by Gebhard Becker and his family. Thefare is reasonably priced, but not terribly tasty.Gebhard makes this up in part by the richnessof the dark ale he serves. Even the small beerserved in the tavern is of a dark variety. Mostwould think such a clientele would result in adour crowd, but Gebhard prefers a lively placeand will employee musicians from time to timeto play the Danse Macabre, one of Gebhardsfavourite tunes.

Beneath the Temple of Mrr (26) lies a largecrypt where the past von Mecklenburg rulers of

the province have been entombed. In addition,a walled graveyard is situated next to theTemple where the deceased members ofPfeildorfs influential families have as theirfinal resting places beneath large ornateheadstones. A small building within the wallsleads to the underground tombs where thedeceased Dwarfs of Pfeildorf are interred. A

large open cemetery is placed to the Templesrear where the dead of the poor and workingclasses are buried. The funeral practices of theTemple of Mrr in the south-western Empireinvolves stuffing the mouth of the deceasedwith holy wafers and severing the head fromthe body, though both are placed in the coffintogether. In this manner, the rest of the dead inthe necropolis will be less likely to be disturbedby insane necromancers. The corpses buried inthe open cemetery are also covered inquicklime to hasten the decomposition of thebody to avoid over-crowding.

    Schwarzwache

This district takes its name from the MrrianTemplar Order of the Black Guards who oncehad an abbey outside the walls of oldAlderhorst. The abbey and templars were longgone before the Orcs arrived to besiege thetown. Folk stories tell of the Orcs avoiding thearea for fear of the ghosts that once roamed thearea. Of the districts in Pfeildorf, theSchwarzwache is said to be the most haunted, though the restless spirits are believed to beless interested in frightening or harming

townfolk.Watch patrols in the Schwarzwache district aremore common in the safety of the day than atnight. The typical day patrol consists of asergeant and two to four watchmen. At night, the patrol can include another four to sixwatchmen.

On the border with the Mrrsfeld district, theInn of Full Moon (27) is a reasonably pricedhostelry with good food and drink. The Inn has

been recently purchased by EcclesteinHostelries, and the original owner SimonMoncrief, originally from Quellenes wasretained as Innkeeper. The inn is in a fairlyquiet neighbourhood, one of the few that noneof the crime gangs of an interest.

The atmosphere within Carinas BookEmporium (28) is dark and closed. Stacks ofbooks clutter the shelves and tables; limitingthe light from the two candelabras and creatingdeep shadows. Carina Hassler is the elderlyproprietor of the book store, having owned theestablishment for as long as anyone in town canremember. The books within the shop are aneclectic collection, mostly mundane andcovering a wide range of topics. Some booksare obscure like Doktor HudsohnsCompendium of Fen Loonies (2408) andLegendary Snotballers. A concealedtrapdoor behind the counter leads to the cellarwhere Carina keeps copies of forbidden textsshe has obtained over the decades.

Bckerplatz (i) is the square named for thenumber of bakers found in the area. A pie (andbaked goods) fair is held on the first Backertagof Erntezeit every year. Though normally thepart of Pie Week in honour of the Halflinggoddess Esmeralda in the Moot and other partsof the Empire, the Pie Festival in Pfeildorf doesnot have religious significance.

Goodberry House of Pies (29) is one of theprominent businesses found on Bckerplatz.Elsa Goodberry runs a family business with hersix children, specialising in (of course) berrypies. The Goodberry family has been inPfeildorf for twenty generations. Unknown tomany people, Elsa Goodberry works for theHeinkel gang, passing along information ofinterest to the crime family as well to thosecontracted to do specific tasks (e.g.,kidnapping).

The Eisenhndlerplatz (j) is the centre of themetalworking area in Pfeildorf. Many of the

buildings are covered with soot from thevarious fires used in the smelting and workingof various metals. On still days and nights, theair is quite hazy, sometimes thickening into adirty fog.

Blackhammer Tavern (30) is located on theedge of Eisenhndlerplatz and serves the smiths

and their apprentices after a hard days labour. The barkeep and owner, Lukas Erhard, is alarge and personable man, belying his fearsomeappearance. Lukas has not been approached byEcclestein as of yet, but has no intention ofselling his tavern. Bertha Mengs is thebrewmaster of Blackhammer and she brews avery dark and hearty bitter as well as an amber-coloured lager.

Altmauer Strasse Ost (k) is the mainthoroughfare of the Schwarzwache, connectingthe Alttorplatz to the Schwarzwache Gate andthe Staig Road beyond. Many of the largercommercial concerns can be found along thisroad along with a number of taverns and inns.

Alptraum House (31) is the location of theAverland Trade Company near the Alttorplatz.Baroness Susanne von Alptraum, granddaughter of the late Grand CountessLudmilla von Alptraum, runs this mercantileconcern to promote the various businessinterests of her extended family. WhenFeldmarschall Marius Leitdorf became Electorof Averland shortly after the Civil War of 2514,the Trade Company became a covert front forthe subversion of Leitdorf rule. The situation atAlptraum House became more complicatedwith the unsettled political created by MariusLeitdorfs death in 2520. Baroness vonAlptraum has allied herself to Countess Selenavon Kusch of Longingbruck, a long-timesupporter of the von Alptraum family.

The Schwarzbrunn Brewery (32) is situatedabove a natural spring in what is considered theheart of the Schwarzwache district. TorstenEcclestein is both the owner and innovativemaster brewer of the landmark brewery.

Though he has no real competition these days, there is talk among other brewers in town thatHerr Ecclestein must have made a daemonicpact that allowed him to mass-produce thebrewerys trademark pilsner. Herr Ecclesteinhad used the profits from the sale of the pilsnerto buy a number of taverns in Pfeildorf and thesurrounding area (under the company name of

Herr Ecclestein spends considerable time thesedays at the offices of Ecclestein Hostelries(33), across the street from SchwarzbrunnBrewery. Records of the his businesstransactions including payoffs to the twomain crime families in Pfeildorf are keptlocked in a safe with a complex lockingmechanism imported from Karak Hirn. Inorder to ensure the secrecy of his records, HerrEcclestein has not provided his secretary,Lorenz Rilke, with the means to access the

    locked records.

    Reikhafen

Like Sllhafen, the Reikhafen district is one ofthe busier areas in Pfeildorf. The port isfavourably placed on the Upper Reik along thetrade route from Karaz-a-Karak to Nuln andAltdorf. Raw material and finished goods fromPfeildorf make their way to markets both up

and down river. The district encompasses anarea on both sides of the Reikhafen Gate, whichis also closed for the night. Unlike Sllhafen, watch patrols are fairly frequent in the dockarea after dark, passing through a smaller doorin the gate to keep order. Smuggling is not ascommon here as in the dock area on the RiverSll, but it still exists.

Surrounded by several streets, the plum-coloured, three-storied EckermannsApothecary and Dyes (34) stands out like an

eyesore. Only the hardy dare enter as thearoma of drying herbs within mixes with thestench of that comes from the chemicals usedin creating dyes. The short, 40ish SusiEckermann is a member of the AlchemistsGuild in good standing as well as anaccomplished herbalist. It is fairly commonknowledge in Pfeildorf that one can generally

find whatever herbal remedies they need atEckermanns for a reasonable price. There is ashady aspect to Susi that is unknown to thepublic at large. A few well-connected patronsare able to readily purchase certain herbal-based poisons (e.g., Manbane) from Susi at arelatively high price. This covert facet of herbusiness allows Susi to maintain her prices forother products. In addition to her variousbusinesses, the energetic Susi is training fourapprentices in one field or the other: GertrudeAdenauer, Ferda Schnabel, Anton Renner, andJohann Stadion.

The light-blue painted, two-storiedSchliemanns Shop of Curios (35) stands onthe corner of Sauerbrun Weg and Hchfeld

Strasse. The proprietor of the shop, GregorSchliemann, is a frail-looking bald man ofmedium height around 50 years of age. Hisphysical appearance is a marked contrast to hisagile mind. Gregor is a student of Imperial andancient history as well as a collector of rare andexotic objects. He is also a member of theSocietas Antiquarii (Brotherhood ofAntiquarians), though he prefers to keep hisassociation secret. Gregors shop is onlyopened from 12 noon until 8 PM everyday. Most of his business transactions are conductedonly by appointment after hours. Hisneighbours have long accepted that Gregordoesnt sell much of anything and the majorityof his customers seem to be outsiders. Theydo find it odd that he has remained in businessfor as long as they can remember (over 25years).

The Reikstrasse (l) runs from Alltorplatz to theReikhafen Gate, separating Reikhafen from theAlderhorst and more influential part of

Reikhafen from the poorer sections of thedistrict. The thoroughfare is quite busy duringthe day from the daily traffic disembarkingfrom boats plying the Reik and seeking thevarious comforts and entertainment Pfeildorfhas to offer.

Sidebar: The Societas AntiquariiThis Brotherhood of Antiquarians (Societas Antiquarii) are a group of explorers, historians andcollectors of ancient artefacts loosely associated with the Temple of Verena. Many members joinexpeditions sponsored by the universities in Altdorf, Marienburg, and Nuln to the far reaches of theworld. The Brotherhood trades in both arcane and scholarly knowledge as well as transporting rare

and ancient items for further study.People native to the areas where these expeditions take place consider these scholar-explorers asnothing more than tomb robbers and despoilers. A number of antiquarians have met an unpleasantdeath at the hands of suspicious mobs or simply disappear into the wilderness never to be seen again.

There are other, graver dangers to members of the Brotherhood. Some of the items found inNehekhara, Elven ruins in the Old World, or other sites of unidentified antiquity are known to beprotected by curses and other types of evil magic or otherworldly powers. In some instances, dangercan take a more mundane form such as Dwarf clans seeking vengeance for what they consider as thelooting of their ancestors tombs. To ensure that the gained knowledge does not die with the possessorof such objects, regular coded correspondence from the antiquarians is sent via trusted courier to a

central repository administered by the Cathedral of Verena in Nuln.

Given the deadly nature of their work, the Antiquarians are always looking for skilled and discreetindividuals to act as guards, guides, scribes, artists, or labourers to assist in the Brotherhoodsendeavours. There are even times when one of the more promising hirelings might find themselvesrecruited to fill vacancies in the Brotherhood. Though most live semi-impoverished existences, members who prefer the excitement of adventure can obtain funding to journey to foreign anddangerous lands.

In contrast to the wizard colleges of Altdorf, the Venerable Guild of Alchemists (36)

prefers to maintain a low-profile in Pfeildorf. The building has a fairly unremarkablearchitecture with most of its narrow windowsset high upon the walls in order to maintain theprivacy of its members. A number of chambershave been built underground in order to providesecrecy for the various experiments andresearches that take place at the Guild. TheGuildmaster is a high-ranking wizard of goodstanding who occasionally takes in anapprentice or two for training.

The Guildhall of Barber Surgeons (37) is athree-storied, white-washed building locatednear Reikhafen Gate. The Guildhall includesan infirmary on the first floor to handle caseswhere the patient is a person of means. Theinfirm poor are re-directed to the Hospice ofthe White Dove to be cared for by theShallyans. As expected, the Guild of Barber

Surgeons have a monopoly on practicingsurgery and the sole authority for the

enforcement of the licensing laws coveringPfeildorfs barber surgeons. Anyone caughtpracticing in the town and nearby villageswithout a license is usually treated by theGuild for a number of days before they are triedin Guild Court.

Of the two Pfeildorf harbours, Reikhafen is thebusiest. As a result, the office of theHarbourmaster (38) is situated near the dockson the Upper Reik. The Harbourmastersoffice is responsible for collecting the taxesfrom the ships mooring at the docks, oversightof the activities of the
