Relentless testingDifferent test criteria are being applied de-pending on the application. They all include a „relentless“ test procedure. Only products that possess all required properties without any fault can pass the EPHY-MESS quality test. The quality-related measurement and test equip-ment is calibrated regularly and is subject to continuous, documented monitoring.

Quality Assurance

Routine testingOur quality assurance monitors compliance with legal requirements (standards) and technical specifications. At EPHY-MESS each ar-ticle undergoes tests to control e.g. dimension, tension, pressure, tightness, functionality, insulation and dielectric strength at the final inspection section of the quality department.

In addition in the course of its compliance with standards, each sen-sor has to fulfill an optical inspection as well as in some cases ad-ditionally mechanical testing. The system-optimized, automated and computer-based processes as well as high quality test and meas-urement equipment ensure accurate measurements and traceable documentation.

Large range of applications in industrial drive technology

The focus of many industrial applications is the engine. EPHY-MESS sensors mon-itor the winding temperature of electric motors, generators, gears or transform-ers and are used for preventive mainte-nance of induction coils. They are also

EPHY-MESS keeps fit rolling stock

Particularly the sensors in high-speed trains must work with absolute reliability under diverse operating conditions. EPHY-MESS temperature sensors, speed sensors and oil level gauges meet these requirements and have proven themselves in world-renowned international train projects.

Forces created by shocks require that the sen-sor elements possess a special internal struc-ture to ensure the continuous capture of reliable measuring values. Over the years EPHY-MESS has gained valuable experience and a thorough knowledge of this technologically demanding field.

The modular concept - developed especially for rolling stock - enables quick and cost-effective integration of various sensors in a sensor sys-tem. Beside temperature sensors, speed sen-sors can also be integrated in the EPHY-MESS sensor concept. Single modules can be mount-ed to one completely assembled multi-arm har-ness.

In addition to high-speed trains, underground and suburban trains as well as buses and hybrid vehicles will also be equipped with EPHY-MESS sensors.

Your specialist for wind power plant temperature sensors

Large wind power plants and difficult to reach offshore facilities require the highest reliability and safety for all components under increas-ingly critical operating conditions. Reliable continuous temperature control plays an es-sential role. Standard mounted coil head sen-sors as well as bearing and slot resistance thermometers are used to monitor temperature in generators or gearboxes and drives. We are constantly collecting and expanding our com-prehensive temperature monitoring knowledge for various wind plant concepts. Due to the

increased performance, the requirements for control and analysis have changed, so that many different temperature sensor types are used for monitoring tasks in wind power plants today. Against this background own product ideas are developed and discussed with po-tential customers.

We offer individual assembly ac-cording to customers request and requirements, and if required we employ plugs or other accessory parts. Cable thermometers are offered in any ima-ginable variation. Thermometers with a metal or ceramic sleeve, different screw-in housings or with a bayonet lock are available.

Dimensions, wiring and materials are usually aligned to customer require-ments. There are models for the most diverse applications. For instance, thermometers with a very high dielectric strength for the installation into the coil of electrical machines or sensor versions with a protection class up to IP68 for use in harsh environments are available. 1 2 . S L O T T H E R M O M E T E R S N W TAs specialist for slot thermometers for use particularly in electric mo-tors or generators, EPHY-MESS offers broad type diversity. A special feature in addition to sensors with a chip measuring resistor are slot resistance thermometers with a bifilar measuring winding. They are available in 3 different versions. These are the rigid, mica insulated NWT-ST, the flexible, shrinking tube insulated NWT-SH and the com-pletely shielded NWT-A.

All thermometers can be obtained with an IECEx, ATEX or TR and UL / CSA approval according to the respective regulations for the utilization in hazardous areas. The bifilar wound slot resistance ther-mometers are complemented by a series of different forms, in which all available basic measuring elements can be implemented.

1 5 . E L E C T R I C B A N D H E A T E R SElectric band heaters (SSH) are designed for use in electric machines. They help to avoid condensation and frost damage in a cold environment when a motor is not running. Our portfolio includes standard versions with or without glass fibre insulation, as well as self limiting versions and ATEX versions for use in hazardous areas. They are available with different power stages, heating band lengths, cable lengths or supply voltages.

EPHY-MESS produces the following speed sensors

• Speed sensors for ferromagnetic gear wheels, 8 V to 24 V DC (limit 30 V) (Hall-effect)• Speed sensors for electrically conductive gear wheels, 8 V to 20 V DC (eddy current principle)• Speed sensors as current loop version 7 mA / 14 mA

A special construction is the high-voltage speed sensor for 110 V DC (77.5 V - 137 V). This speed sensor is only available with housing version DWG41 (grinding housing) . It is designed especially for Ø 200 mm gear wheels with 120 teeth (module 1.67).

The modular system combines tried-and-tested products ensuring safe operation, high availability and low susceptibility to faults. Sensor, cable and connector can be flexibly combined. This allows the measurement sensors to be individually adapted to the requirements of the railway industry:

1 6 . S E N S O R S F O R R A I L W A Y I N D U S T R YTemperature sensors are used worldwide in high-speed-, cargo- and commuter-trains, subways, tramways and trolley busses. They monitor the temperature of motors, gears and wheel-set bearings in the bogie. The temperature sensors are assembled in a harness, ideally already including EPHY-MESS speed sensors, which are responsible for the detection of speed and direction. Speed sensors also work reliably even under harsh conditions in the mining industry.

1 7 . O I L L E V E L G A U G E S EPHY-MESS produces robust and vibration-resistant oil level gauges specifically for traffic engineering. In addition to the basis version with single window for protected areas, oil level gauges with a two-chamber system are also available. They are optimized for use in the under-floor area of rail vehicles and will withstand the effects of rockfall.

A L W A Y S A T T H E C U T T I N G E D G EThe R&D department ensures propper product design and process development. Feasibility studies and prototype assembly are coordi-nated: with high-quality testing methods in re-search laboratories customer-specific designs and applications are developed and qualified by first article inspections (e. g. compressive strength and vibration testing, tensile testing as well as temperature and climate tests). Op-timizations are carried out by e.g. applying low-polluting materials in accordance with RoHS and REACH.

The two ever important goals for EPHY-MESS are quality improvements to existing products as well as work process improvements to the benefit of our customer.
