President’s & Vice-President’s Message

2018 Judges College

This year judges college started with the review of 2019 the IGP rules. Starting January 1, 2019 USCA will offer IGP titles which have more of a progression from 1, 2, and 3 levels while encouraging greater participation and success at the early levels. Over the coming months the USCA Judges College will publish updated rules and several instructional videos to highlight some of the important changes.

Overall, it was a great weekend of growth, learning, and open exchange lead by DOJ Nathaniel Roque and Assistant DOJ Ann Marie Chaffin. Almost every USCA Judge was in attendance as well as a large contingent of GSSCC judges. Historically, judges were expected to continually learn and develop with the changing times, rules, and increasingly more masterful training; we have now put this growth and development into more measurable ways and means within the Continuing Education Program. Learning is not a passive activity; our judges are pursuing excellence with passion and eagerness.

Judges are leaders within our organization and as such, operate with the highest duty of care to the German Shepherd dog, sport, and organization. They are the “face” of leadership and have the greatest contact with all of you. This is an incredible responsibility that comes with great demands.

Our judges are committed to the following:• We will operate with the highest levels of

integrity• We will treat competitors professionally and in a

sportsmanlike manner• We have implemented an excellent training

program with up-to-date interpretations of new and changing rules

• Although we will always have degrees of subjectivity, the convergence toward a more consistent and uniform evaluation is happening. This will lead to a more realistically set expectations as competitors compete at different events with different judges.

• Judges’ critiques will be informative and explain the good as well as areas for improvement

Reciprocity:Sportsmanship is a two-way agreement. Please remember to:

• Report in / out by shaking hands with your judge and letting them know:

� Who your dog is � Who you are � What you are reporting in / out for

• Dress in a professional/sportsmanlike manner• Thank your judge, group, tracklayer, helpers,

secretaries, volunteers, etc. for their hard work• Listen to the critique standing up, with a

controlled dog in a sit or down• Treat them with respect and be professional• Do not put the judge up at a bug infested hotel

and feed them days old pizza• Do not expect high scores – earn them!• If you disagree/question a score or evaluation,

wait until a break and professionally discuss with the judge. They will be more than willing to explain their rating.

• Expect a fair, consistent, and honest evaluation

2018 USCA National Show and Breed SurveyBy Michele Scarberry, USCA National Breed Warden

Way Out West Schutzhund Club hosted our first annual National Conformation Championship on April 12-15, in Ione, CA. The town of Ione was extremely hospitable, and the venue and hall were outstanding. The weather was great, and although WOW members were sparse, they worked relentlessly to make this event a success.

SV Conformation Judge Rainer Mast judged the entire event, with our Performance Judge Nathaniel Roque. USCA helpers performed excellent work, and the overall level of pressure in the performance test was elevated to its highest level yet. During the event, only one dog failed because of a failure to out. This year marked the highest percentage of dogs with combined performance scores of eight or higher.

The catalog totaled 77 entries, with 10 Breed Surveys. Four females were declared for Universal Siegerin; two received Performance awards. Nine males declared for Universal Sieger; four received Performance awards.

Representing Team USCA on the 2018 WUSV Universal Sieger Team are:

• V-Xorra van Meerhout [Jessy Gabriel], Universal Siegerin receiving a 5/5 performance rating, *USA bred

• V-Moose von Hugelblick [Jennifer Flynn], Universal Sieger receiving a 5/5 performance rating, *USA bred

Also qualified: V-Baxter vom Sakral [Cherie Flores], V-Marek von der Nacht [Liz Snider], and V-Oshi van Blutsenhof [Denise Scelsi].

The title of USCA National Conformation Champion(s) were awarded to:

Stephanie Dunion acted as our translator, which she has done for many years. On Friday afternoon,

Stephanie also presented a seminar for the group on the many facets of the IRO. We were privileged to be able to view the SV’s original video of the Rettungshunde, created by Walter Hoffmann. Saturday evening Cherie Flores invited everyone to a BBQ at her facility; we all thoroughly enjoyed the camaraderie and the view!

Presented Sunday morning was veteran dog, VA-Amy von der Zenteiche, owned by Patricia and Shannon O’Donovan. Zachary, Shannon’s son and Patricia’s grandson, exhibited Amy.

There were no applicants for academic awards.There was a mixture of participants entered into the competition. We were pleasantly surprised to observe the show line and working line people coming together at this event. The majority of our entries included working line competitors supporting the event. Those competitors were surprised to see that their dogs are capable of achieving a V show rating at a National Conformation show. We all agreed that if nothing else, this event helped give our working line members a better understanding of the ring craft, and our show line members a greater appreciation for working heritage.

FUTURE SIEGER SHOWSThe GSDCA hosted their National Show and IPO Championship within weeks of our National show. Their entries were over 140, including a few USCA members who responded positively to our initial survey for the National Show, but chose to attend GSDCA’s event. We believe the lack of attendance from our USCA members was primarily because of location. Michele will poll our big breeders regarding the 2019 Sieger Show; this will help provide input as to how we can make the USCA event even better. Heidi has a thought that she is working on regarding the Show side of declaring for the Universal Team; she will make that proposal in the near future, and hopefully it will result in hosting just a Sieger Show every two years.


Regarding USCA non-member fees: this does include Show entries. The USCA Rules and Regulations state that owners must be USCA members.

I am currently in negotiations with two clubs that are very interested in hosting the 2019 Sieger Show. The Show Committee will remain involved to assist our hosts, ensuring a successful, profitable event.

The committee has developed a system that is improved upon with each event. We have established protocols for our new people entering the ring, improved the efficiency of our show secretaries, and fine-tuned the check-in process at the office. The majority of the event planning is handled by the committee, which consists of a handful of USCA volunteer members who are well-versed in ring craft, working together to hone the proficiency of this event. Without their dedication, it is not possible to offer our clubs this support /guidance. Thank you Pat Beauchamp, Irene Clute, Michele Clubb, Stephanie Dunion, Ivana Karlsen, Trish Sansbury, Debbie Sweeney, and Heidi Theis.

UNIVERSAL SIEGER INFORMATIONLastly, a few reminders about Universal Sieger. If a member is declaring for both Universal Sieger and WUSV teams, then their deposit is $500. If they are declaring for only one team, the deposit is $250. The new form can be found on the website: www.germanshepherddog.com/wusv-team-declaration/.

All Team Members must meet the minimum qualifications as established by the WUSV for entry into the World Universal Sieger competition. The dog must receive a Pronounced courage rating with a minimum of 80 points in protection at the USCA GSD IPO3 National Championship, and must receive a minimum show rating of G with a Pronounced Performance rating at the Sieger Show.

The town of Ione was extremely hospitable, the venue and hall were outstanding. The weather was great, and although WOW members were sparse, they worked relentlessly helping to make this event a success.

Prebiotics, Probiotics and a Healthy CanineBy John Howard, Co-Owner, Kinetic® Performance Dog Food

One of the hot topics in both human and canine nutrition is the use of probiotics. This is one of the more important trends in the canine nutrition world that affect working dogs due to their higher activity and stress levels. The lesser known and discussed prebiotics can play just as important a role in digestive health, though, and are a nice complementary component to probiotics in the canine diet.

What Exactly Are They?They sound a lot alike and both are great for digestive health, but prebiotics and probiotics should not be confused with one another. Here is a simple way to remember the difference.

Probiotics: These are live bacteria that are created during the fermentation of certain foods and are beneficial to digestion. Basically, these are good bugs.Prebiotics: These are non-digestible fiber in certain types of food that feed the bacteria during fermentation as part of the digestive process. In short, these feed the good bugs.

It is pretty simple, really. One is good bacteria and the other keeps them well fed to maintain a healthy gut environment. Just find a food with both and your dog is on the road to great digestion. Easy, right? Well, it is not quite that easy.

Both Have LimitationsA combination of prebiotics and probiotics are absolutely beneficial to your dog’s digestion and

overall health. Unfortunately, the best sources and processing methods for the two don’t exactly align. For example, prebiotics are durable to the point that heat and processing, such as the cooking of a commercial food, can actually make them more effective. As food for good bacteria, though, they can take a little longer to have the desired impact.

Probiotics, on the other hand, can be boosted very quickly but are pretty fragile. Heat, age and even the digestive process can kill them by the millions. This means you need to get a pretty concentrated source of the right kind and make sure they were not killed off in the wrong kind of processing.

Strongest in CombinationFor prebiotics, there are plenty of good dietary sources including a quality dry food. With probiotics, it is more effective to supplement the diet with a concentrated source that has not been heat processed. Combine the two of these with a range of digestive enzymes and you can go a long way in keeping your working dog healthy and at the top of the performance curve.

The 2018 USCA Judges Meeting was held July 13-15 in Las Vegas. This year, again, had an excellent attendance of twenty (20) USCA and four (4) GSSCC Judges.

Discussion covered the implementation of the 2019 IGP Working Dog Trial Rules that will replace our current IPO Working Dog Trial Rules. The meeting covered nearly page-by-page review and clarification of the English Version of the FCI Rule Book (available on the FCI website for down load at www.fci.be/en/Utility-Dogs-58.html ) covering the changes that will be implemented for IGP effective January 1, 2019.

As compared to the 2012 FCI IPO English version, the current English version of the FCI Rule Book is a much improved translation of the German version. But in review of the Rule Book, we have found some errors and inconsistencies as it is compared to the German Rule Book. With the help of GSSCC/SV Judge Raino Flugge we also found some inconsistency within the German Version of the rule book. We will be following up with clarification from the FCI and the SV and hope to have those announcements at the SV Judges Meeting in November. USCA will produce an edited English version of the rule book for USCA use that will also include USCA approved variances, corrections to the translation errors, and additional information. This book will be available by November 2018 for download off the USCA website or purchase in hard copy version from the USCA Office.

I know members are anxious and concerned with getting the IGP information and continuing to train

in preparation for trials and competitions taking place after January 1, 2019. At this time the best information in general is to reference the FCI English version of the IGP rules from the link above. The changes in the overall exercises are not so major that they should effect the ability of a dog currently being trained for any level IPO not to be able to pass the IGP. There are some changes in IGP 1 & 2 regarding the correct way to show / complete the exercises as well as a change in the point allocations of the exercises. IGP3 is essentially unchanged from our current IPO3.

I will be posting information on the USCA website regarding the individual exercises and the changes for all levels of IGP. USCA will continue to offer the same corresponding titles in IGP as we have in IPO (still excluding Protection only titles, ZTP, and the IGBH 1-3, but adding the new FH-V tracking title). As any clarifications or errors are found in the English version of the FCI Rule Book those will also be posted on the USCA web site.

The USCA Helper Committee and the USCA Tracking Committee will also be making changes as needed to implement IGP, as there are some differences that will affect both tracking and helper work at trial levels.

Best of luck in your training and trials. At this time, continue to train as you have been in preparation for any IPO title and both you and your dog will be prepared for the changes being implemented in IGP.

Three USCA Regional Breed Wardens Compete at 2018 WDCBy Michele Scarberry, USCA National Breed Warden

Regional Breed Wardens are an important link between our registry, the breeders, and clubs within their regions. These three ladies have taken on an vital role for our breed by participating in working dog trials, conformation shows, and breed surveys. These evaluations are major contributors in ensuring that we consistently breed only the finest dogs to guarantee that the GSD will continue to be the most versatile breed.

Rosetta Barke is the North Central Regional Breed Warden. Her occupation is RN, Acute Clinical Coordinator - Inpatient Dialysis. Rosetta was second place at the USCA 2018 FH Championship with V-Bella vom Kellnerhof, IPO3 FH2 Lbz.

Rosetta became active in the sport well over 40 years ago. She bred her first litter in 1980, and has handler-owner trained many of her own progeny. Her first German Shepherd, Anka vom Ilsaheim, won an AKC Dog World Award of Canine Distinction in the late 1970’s, and that’s when she became passionate about the breed and interested

in preserving the working characteristics of the German Shepherd. Since that 1970 event, Rosetta has participated in numerous local club trials, Regional and National events. To her credit, she has raised and trained from puppyhood, two USCA North Central Regional IPO3 Champions which qualified for and participated in our National Championship. One then became North Central Region Universal Sieger.

Bella v Kellnerhof was bred by Peter Dummer, Bella is a coated dog, Rosetta states that Bella is genetically a very strong tracking dog, active and full of good work ethics. Bella’s first track occurred on her way home from the breeder at eight weeks of age. Bella’s

accomplishments include: participation in three different FH Championships at the WDC, HOT Multiple x IPO3/FH2, 2012 NC Regional IPO3 Champion, 2012 Mid Eastern Region Long Coat Siegerin, 2012 participant in USCA Nationals, 2013 and 2016 High Score NC Regional FH2 Champion, Performance of Merit/Parade of Greats, TOP Dog GSDCW, AKC UD/TDX with numerous placements, CHIC certified via OFA and her Lifetime Breed Survey. Bella has produced multiple titled progeny, including a national participant.

Rosetta smiles as she says, “This ole girl is truly a joy to train, trial and live with and does not appear to be slowing down.”

Christina Fallin is the Mid-Central Regional Breed Warden and a member of St. Louis Schutzhund Association. Christina defines herself as a German Shepherd Dog addict. She is also a classified helper.Growing up, she was enamored with horses, dabbling in the low-level Hunter/Jumper world, but never having sufficient time or funds to really be competitive. Then fast forward a few years, she married, had a child, and worked from home as an Independent Health and Life Insurance Agent.

Christina discovered Schutzhund when she began searching for a companion/personal protection dog. She knew that she wanted a dog that could live in the house with a family and also function as a protection dog. In her search for this perfect dog, the search kept finding the letters “SchH” on the pedigree links, after looking further into those letters, she became intrigued with the sport. Seeking out people who were knowledgeable about the bloodlines, she enjoyed researching pedigrees and discussing the


strengths and weaknesses of the various dogs within those pedigrees, and also the occurrences where the combinations have been successful. Her interest in the German Shepherd grew from just the desire to procure a quality dog, to being a part of creating quality working GSDs with solid temperaments that could be placed with families. Her journey started with Audi von Alpena, and after several challenging life events, lots of guidance from knowledgeable people, and investing seven years in her pursuit, Audi is now, SG IPO3 KKL for life and is the mother of Christina’s A, B, C and E litters, she breeds under the kennel name Fallamhain. Audi puppies have successfully been titled and breed surveyed. Christina’s goal is to keep learning about the breed, produce quality dogs, compete at the highest level, and in some way be able to pay it forward.

She competed at the 2018 WDC with V-Iko vom Guldenen Winkel IPO3 KKL, who was bred by Gregor Kaschinski. Ajay Singh originally imported Iko as a puppy for Christina’s partner Brian. But Iko and Brian did not work out as a team, so Brian offered Iko for sale. Meanwhile, Christina started working with Iko while waiting on a prospective buyer, and realized what a loss it would be to let him go. She convinced Brian to trade Iko for ‘A’ litter girl, Arya von Fallamhain, IPO, KKL. Christina says, “Iko is a strong male with his own agenda at times, a definite challenge, but here we are 2x IPO3 and KKL, we competed at my first WDC, and qualified for the 2018 USCA Nationals.”

Christina enjoys the many great people she has met in the sport, traveling to new places and says she has made a ton of awesome memories and looking forward to many more!

Trish Sansbury is the Mid Eastern Regional Breed Warden. Her occupation is dog groomer, she has owned and operated Dog Daze Salon for over 30 years. Trish competed in the 2018 FH Championship placing 3rd with Handler Owner Trained Bred, Edward de Locherie IPO3 FH.

Eddie has competed in numerous Regional and USCA National events. Now retired, Eddie’s new job is being a Therapy Dog.

Trish has been involved with dog sports since 1983 titling her first German Shepherd, Asia, to AKC/CKC CDX TD, and SchH2 FH. She became a member of USCA in 1986, is a member/president of OG Buckeye SchH Club, she breeds under the kennel name de Locherie, and has achieved USCA Master Gold Sports Medal. Her accomplishments include competing with five of her own Bred By-Handler-Owner Trained de Locherie progeny.

Her prior achievements include; 2nd place in the 2010 FH Championship with SG-Jax von Lindesfarne SchH3 FH KK, 2001 MER Champion, multiple times National participant Fello vd Huelhin Haus SchH3. Fello aka Ace, became her foundation dog for her breeding program. She has trained/titled five dogs to SchH3, two dogs to IPO2, three dogs to IPO1, two to FH, and one to FH2.

Trish is very active with the Conformation Show aspects for GSDs. A member of the Sieger Show committee, she helps with the website, creating show catalogs and show cards, acting as ring secretary or steward, and she assists with Regional and National event planning/administration.

She is currently training two females that will be added into her breeding program in the near future. Eddie’s therapy work includes two days a month visiting hospice and the students at Case Western University.

The intention of the Breed Advisory Committee is to encourage USCA members to breed according to the USCA Standard. It is a real achievement for any German Shepherd breeder to have bred or to own a dog that has been recommended for breeding. The “unmanaged population” is often seen as the benchmark for our breed, these dogs are purebred shepherd dogs by definition, but in most cases do not meet our high quality expectations. Unfortunately, USCA has limited influence on the breeding of that unmanaged population of GSD.

Our Breed Wardens believe that the Schutzhund trial is a suitability test for breeding, and that dogs coming from these lines are more likely to have correct temperament and physical structure.

Sport Dogs Ocala’s First TrialBy Reneé Glenney

The weekend of July 6, 7 and 8 brought many sport friends to the sleepy town of Ocala to support our first endeavor as a full member USCA club…an IPO trial, in Florida, in the middle of the summer! Would it be a success? Or would the typically brutal mid-summer heat wave be more than the dog and handler teams could overcome?

We are pleased to report that the weather gods heard our prayers and blessed us with a most enjoyable weekend of tolerable and, at times, almost cool weather! We kicked off our event on Friday night under the lights with the first half of the BH teams entered. Immediately following the microchip identifications and the start of the traffic portion, what started as a light rain soon gave way to quite a downpour. Teams and officials took a break and waited it out until the deluge broke into a

slow, steady light rain with a cooling effect that was appreciated by all. The dogs and handlers performed admirably and worked late into the evening. Under the watchful eye of Judge Bruno Kastelic Sakoparnig, almost all teams turned in exemplary performances

that gave proof that they definitely earned the title of “Traffic secure companion dog”.

Saturday morning found the IPO1 handlers out bright and early on the tracking fields ready to show what months of training, blood, sweat and tears would produce this day. Unfortunately, one of the entered teams had to pull due to injury, but we know they will be back again. The other three entries were very successful and left the field with smiles and positive thoughts for the evening ahead. Congratulations to Jill Doherty, with Vera, who brought home 96-points on their track!

Back at the field that evening, under the lights, we watched all seven of the IPO entries go thru their routines. What an amazing performance these handlers turned in! Jill and Vira had great obedience and protection routines, raising the bar for their competitors. IPO2 teams were quite polished and ready to take on the competition! Carolyn Tanner and Thatcher did especially well and proved they were more than ready for this title. Veit Bachmann’s dog, Ammo, amazed everyone watching with focus and attentiveness to his handler. those two created on the field. Our lone IPO3 entry was our friend Vit Singh from Jacksonville. He and his dog, Chuck, showed a very professional routine that showcased the hours and hours of work that go into making an IPO3 dog. Chuck is very talented and Vit knows how to get the most out of that dog!

Following the excitement of the working routines, we started yet again with the balance of the BH teams. Once again, we worked long into the night between the obedience routines and the mountain of paperwork for each of the day’s entries. Between our training director, Michael Buchmann, our very capable judge, Bruno, and myself as Trial Secretary, I do believe we were all ready for that night to end.

Starting early Sunday morning, five ADs began the grueling assignment of completing their 12-mile task in the allotted time frame. Happily, each team found success waiting for them at the end of their run! The dogs were all in great shape, having been frequently checked as directed by the rules. All Handlers were in good shape, even the one who stated he will “Never, EVER, do that again”! GREAT job folks!

Immediately following the AD, we found the teams heading back out to the tracking field again. Our remaining IPO 2 and 3 entries, fresh after a night of success, were eager to start tracking and get the final results of the weekend’s efforts. They were joined by our lone TR-1 entry, Kent and Raven from Southwest Florida. Our teams again enjoyed victory as all teams passed tracking, with Carolyn and Thatcher scoring 90 in the IPO2 category and Vit with Chuck attaining a 96!

After a long morning, all scores were added up and awards were handed out. We had many successful

teams compete this weekend. Our 19 BHs, five AD, one TR-1 and seven IPO teams all left the Sport Dogs Ocala field as winners. Congratulations to these folks and I personally look forward to seeing lots of IPO1’s in our fall and spring trial from these teams.

Our high IPO1 was Jill Doherty with her GSD Vira, our high IPO2 went to Carolyn Tanner with Thatcher and our high IPO3 was our sports friend Vit Singh with Chuck. Jill and Vit tied score-wise, but Vira came thru scoring one point higher in protection to take home the High in Trial trophy!

As the Trial Secretary, I would like to thank those who made this happen! To the new friends who traveled from as far away as Miami, to those who were local and everyone in between. Thank you for your support of the Sport Dogs Ocala IPO Club! Without friends like you, such clubs could not exist and be as amazingly successful as we were this weekend. To the members who stepped up their game and gave of their time, energy and various resources to make this trial even bigger and better than we were expecting, I humbly say “Thank You”. It is people like you who are the life’s blood of successful clubs.

To our judge, Bruno Kastelic Sakoparnig, you touched the hearts of many during your visit, Sir. Your fairness in judging, your sense of humor when handler’s nerves got the best of them, and your graciousness ensure that Sport Dogs Ocala would welcome you back with open arms if and when the opportunity should present itself.

On June 18, 2018, United implemented several new policies and customer requirements for pet air transportation to improve the safety of the travel experience following a comprehensive review of our PetSafe® program in partnership with American Humane, the country’s first national humane organization.

Throughout the remainder of the year, United and American Humane will continue to make enhancements as needed to further improve the safety and care of animal transportation.

PetSafe® is United’s specially designed program for transporting cats and dogs that are not eligible to travel in the aircraft cabin. United PetSafe offers airport-to-airport travel for cats and dogs traveling to approximately 300 destinations, and members of our PetSafe team are trained professionals who love animals and are dedicated to ensuring that all pets receive the best care throughout their entire journey.

Before you bookNew acceptance policiesOn June 18, 2018, United implemented new embargoes and restrictions for travel via United PetSafe.United transports cats and dogs only via our PetSafe program.You may book your pet’s travel up to 30 days in advance, but all reservations must be made at least 5 days prior to each pet’s departure.Age of your petPuppies and kittens traveling within the U.S. and Puerto Rico must be at least 8 weeks of age to be accepted for travel on United. “If you’re gonna go down, go down.” Patrick Davis, the Northwest Region’s newest Teaching Helper, admonished the helpers gathered on the Placer County Schutzhund Club field. “Forget your pride, and don't hurt the dog.”

PCSC’s May helper seminar was Davis’ first solo seminar as a full-fledged Teaching Helper. Four eager recruits of varied helper experience – Dave DeMarco, Mark Maples, Juan Portillo, and Jeremy Friedman – donned helper gear and sleeves, ready to learn the tricks of the trade and test their mettle out there on the field with the dogs. The rest of the club served as a captive audience, listening to Davis’ explanations, watching demonstrations, and observing each individual helper perform.

The day started with introductions, followed by the lecture and discussion portion of the seminar. The helpers and spectators alike pulled up chairs and

circled around Davis as he discussed various topics: the role of helper, working for and with the judge, proper mechanics, how to perform the exercises, the application of pressure, rules governing helper work, how to handle various scenarios, and dangers of injury. Davis advised the helpers to always wear their protective gear, and emphasized protecting their backs with a back brace no matter how young they were and how “uncool” they thought back braces were. “I wish that I had put aside my ego when I was a young helper and listened, taken better care of myself,” he commented. “There’s a lot of safety concerns that could have been avoided or prevented.”

In addition to the lecture, Davis asked questions and encouraged participation from the helpers and the spectators, welcoming their queries and comments while sharing examples to help illustrate concepts. The discussion was lively and extremely informative, and provided an eye-opening look at the work of the

helper. The overall emphasis was on doing what is safe for the dog and helper while executing the work properly and with pressure. Test the dog, but fairly and safely.

After the lecture portion and written helper test, the entire group moved out onto the field. Davis began by first putting the helpers through a group of related exercises without the dog before adding canines to the mix. First up: the helper’s stance in the blind. Each helper performed this individually and occasionally Davis tested a helper’s stance with a push on the upper torso to mimic a dog bumping into them.

“Ohhh, we have a unicorn!” Davis gave a big smile as Mark, a left-handed helper, took his spot in the blind. Having a left-handed helper is rarity in the working dog world; with the sleeve on his right arm and the stick in his left hand, the Unicorn presented a different picture for the dogs. It also created some unique challenges in setting up for the escape bite and direction for the drives.

The dry run continued with stepping out of the blind and setting up for the escape, followed by the escape run itself. The helpers learned how to maneuver from the blind to the spot for the escape, how to pump the sleeve arm appropriately on takeoff to help them gain momentum, and how to properly present the bite bar. Each helper worked through the awkwardness of having only a couple of arm pumps before locking the sleeve into position for the bite. Too many arm pumps, and a fast dog might just miss the sleeve and tag the helper!

Then came the drive. Davis discussed and demonstrated the footwork, arm positions, and stick hits for the three different types of drive: the skip

drive, the running drive, and the power-push drive, which is used for big powerful dogs that make it difficult to move them. “Don’t let your legs cross in the run!” Davis cautioned. This tends to make a helper stumble and trip, especially if the dog gets wrapped up in the footwork.

“Stick up!” said Davis. “Then Rule of Five: five steps, stick hit, five steps, stick hit, five steps, lock up.”

The four helpers demonstrated each of the three types of drives, complete with stick hit motions. Then after a short break, the helpers performed each of these elements with the dog. The first dog up was Gerri Lempner’s retired female, Whiskey ze Stribrneho Kamene IPO2. Whiskey was more than happy to show the helpers the ropes in the blind, escapes, and drive.

“Breathe! I can tell you're not breathing because your face is red!” shouted Davis during the drives, earning some giggles from the spectators. Davis continually offered feedback as well as praise to his pupils, and suggested a few tweaks here and there to the footwork

and to the delivery of the stick hits.

The next dry run consisted of the back transport and reattack, then a side transport to the judge. Each helper practiced the turn to attack the dog out of the back transport before performing it with a dog. Paul Johnson’s retired dog Fritz Eqidius IPO3 eagerly obliged in working the helpers on the back transport, reattack, and side transport.

Then came the most nerve-wracking part of the whole Schutzhund routine: the long bite. Davis took the helpers through a dry run of coming out of the blind, running down center line, and threatening with voice and stick. Then Davis demonstrated sleeve and stick side catches, and had the helpers practice and show him the mechanics of each type of catch. Much discussion ensued over how to determine if the dog should be taken sleeve side or stick side, and Davis continually emphasized letting the dog decide which way to go, not just doing what the helper was most comfortable with or doing what would look the most exciting. “Keep ego out of it,” he cautioned.

Before performing the full-length long bite, Davis

had helpers perform shorter send bites with a dog, then short sends followed by a drive. All of the newer helpers’ eyes widened as Doug Lumsargis brought out his dog Yeager von der Pfalz, who eagerly announced his presence in a manner akin to a Tasmanian Devil.Nothing like intimidating new helpers by bringing out a screaming beast! But Yeager settled into the work and gave the helpers good practice in catching a big dog.

Just when everyone thought the exercises were over, there was one more to follow: the performance portion for a breed survey. This work involves an attack out of the blind, plus a long bite. “Watch the corner, it jumps out at you!” remarked Davis with a smile, as he instructed helpers on the attack out of the blind.

Individual classifications occurred at the end of the day. Each helper performed a full IPO3 routine with a dog, plus the performance portion of the breed survey. The helpers then received an individual critique in front of all those present, just like the handler experiences in a trial. All four helpers were successful in their classifications, with three earning a Basic level classification (Jeremy, Mark, and Juan), and one earning a Regional classification (Dave). The handlers who graciously offered their dogs for the classifications were: Celeste Schmidt with Natsu, Paul Johnson with Fritz, and John Riboni with Elroy.

“It was a fun experience,” said the Unicorn, Mark. “Our teaching helper was super encouraging and informative. I really couldn’t have asked for more from a teaching helper.”

Congratulations to all the helpers on earning their classifications! Thank you to all the handlers who volunteered their dogs for the seminar and for the classifications; helper seminars cannot happen without these individuals who offer up their dogs to educate helpers and provide them with the opportunity to practice their skills. How did you first get involved in Schutzhund and helper work?

I have always had dogs, and did my own version of obedience for my pets. About 20 years ago, I must have read about Schutzhund; this was before the days of the internet! I read Helmut Raiser’s book, Der Schutzhund, and another one that was just titled Schutzhund, I think. I was very intrigued by the discipline and the work for the German Shepherd breed. So I showed up to a small training group in Fresno with my show line GSD and said, “I want to do Schutzhund.” It didn’t work out with that dog, but I still wanted to be involved, so I started out doing helper work with that club.

What was your most embarrassing or funny moment?The group I started with primarily had Rottweilers. They said “Go stand in the blind with the sleeve on.” So I did, and they sent in a big, dirty Rottweiler, who came in and did a high hold and bark right in my face. Then the dog grabbed the sleeve, and yanked me off my feet out of the blind and onto my face. Of course they all laughed, but I got up, dusted myself off, and said “What’s next?”

Tell me a little bit about your experience as a helper and handler.

I am a National level helper, and have worked national and regional championships, as well as club level events. I have also competed to the national level as a handler. I have titled five dogs to varying levels, the highest being SchH3. All my dogs have been Handler Owner Trained. I was a K9 Handler with my current agency for nine years, and I titled my patrol dog to a SchH3, as well. My K9 was a Malinois -- my only Malinois! Within one year of getting him as a green dog, we got his SchH1, earned his certification for patrol, and got his first live street bite.

Why become a Teaching Helper?I want to pass on what I’ve learned. There’s a lot of up-and-coming helpers that don’t have a mentor, or have learned certain styles that can be improved upon, especially those aspiring to work dogs at the national

level. My mentor, Gary Park, imparted me with a lot of skills and a good mindset about helper work; I want to help people and impart all that I have learned, as well.

What do you enjoy most about helper work?Seeing a dog progress. When someone comes to you with an issue, and you work on it and see them progress and improve.

What do you enjoy most about being a Teaching Helper?Well, I haven’t been one that long, but I love helping someone better themselves so they can get to the next level. I love to help people, and if I can teach one person or improve one person’s skill, then that’s very rewarding.

What are the main points you try to get across to “helpers-in-training”?

Safety. One of the main points I try to get across is safety, not just for the dog, but also for helpers. Wear your protective equipment, use back braces, wrist guards, whatever you need. Set aside the ego, and wear what you need to keep your body safe from injury.

Any tips for aspiring new helpers?Surround yourself with positive people. Work as many dogs as you can. Have fun, and don’t take things too personally. And be humble; don’t let your ego get the best of you.

Please accept this letter as my request to be considered for reelection as USCA Secretary.

I have been a member of USCA since 2009 when I joined our local club, Way Out West Schutzhund Club (WOW). I have been an active member of WOW since I first joined and have been the President since 2011. I enjoy my role as President and feel WOW has benefitted from my organizational skills as well as my ease with which I can handle difficult situations or people. I have also held the position of Regional Secretary (2013-2015), currently I am the Assistant Regional Director of the Northwestern Region and the USCA Secretary (2016-present) and the Chair of the USCA Event Planning Committee (2017-present) .

Growing up, my dad was a Deputy Sheriff for over 25 years. He was, and still is a great influence on my life. During his tenure, he had a couple German Shepherd’s and was assigned to the Sheriff’s Department K9 Unit. I have fond memories of going to police dog trainings and helping him at home with the dogs.

When it finally became time for me to get my own dog, of course, I wanted a German Shepherd. So, in 2008 I reached out to a local breeder and purchased my first GSD, Uzi vom Roten Wald. The breeder recommended that I attend Joel Monroe’s basic obedience classes. Prior to attending the classes, I didn’t know anything about the sport of Schutzhund. During the course of the classes the trainer suggested I bring Uzi out for Schutzhund training. I was hooked. Uzi and I had our ups and downs but we both enjoyed the sport. I titled Uzi for his BH and we attempted for our IPO1 and our TR1. Unfortunately I lost Uzi unexpectedly in July of 2017 to Bloat. This whole process has been a huge learning experience for me and I have enjoyed the up and downs of the sport. I currently have a seventeen month old puppy that I am co-owning, Xtera Von Der Tetiaroa. I am enjoying working with her and trying not to make the same mistakes I made with Uzi, but I am sure there will be new ones.

I have been a Public Safety Dispatcher for over 20 years and for the last 10 years I have also served as Assistant Team Leader of our Crisis Negotiations Team. I feel this is where I learned the most in the area of dealing with difficult people and situations. My years of experience in Law Enforcement have taught me patience, time management, organization skills and to be an effective leader. I have also coordinated and volunteered at several local charity events, such as Special Olympics’ Polar Plunge, DARE Guns and Hoses Basketball Game, Tip-A-cop and many more. These skills gave me the tools I needed to spear-head the WOW team in hosting 2012 USCA Northwest Regionals, the 2013 USCA GSD IPO3 Nationals and the 2015 NW Regional Conformation Show and Breed Survey and the 2016 USCA GSD IPO3 Nationals. I have also assisted other clubs in my region with trial secretary duties for regional championships. I was also asked to be the Trial Secretary for the 2017 Working Dog Championships, the 2017 USCA GSD National Championship, 2018 Working Dog Championships and 2018 NW Regionals.

Severing as the USCA Secretary for the last two years has been a lot of work but rewarding. I enjoy helping the organization grow and helping members with any questions they have. I believe my years of experience and organization skills have been great benefit to USCA and I look forward to serving as the USCA Secretary for the next two years.

I am seeking the position of Treasurer of The United Schutzhund Clubs of America. I have been a member of USCA since 1996. I served as Treasurer from 2000 to 2000 which were financially difficult times for our organization. I am a member of Turner Junction Working Dog Club.

I have a B.S. in Business Administration with concentrations in Finance and Economics.

I served in the U.S. Coast Guard for five years and was a Police Officer for almost six years. Then I worked in Banking and Corporate Financing for thirty years retiring as a Senior Vice President. Additionally I am President of a Police Pension Fund Board of Trustees a position I have held for about fifteen years.

The reason I am seeking this office is because I liked being Treasurer and I did a very good job during financially difficult times for our organization.

I am interested in running for the USCA Board of Inquiry. I am currently on the auditing committee and am willing to also run for that position again.

I got my first GSD in 1985. Have titled 3 dogs in AKC obedience and 7 GSD in SchH/IPO, all HOT, including 2 AWD1 and an FH1/FH2 along with many AD and 3 breed surveys. 3 time member of the USCA SchH3/IPO3 club, working on my 4th. Gold sports medal recipient. I just had my 5th generation of German shepherd dog puppies in January under my kennel name Zu Treuen Händen.

I have been self-employed the majority of my life. Ran a very successful natural beef operation from 1988 until 2005. Instructor in dog training from2005 until present with a few off and on years previously. CGC evaluator.

ATTENTION:To All Regional, National and Teaching Classified Helpers Interested in Performing the Helperwork in USCA’s Sieger Show, Working Dog Championship, German Shepherd Dog National IPO-3 Championship, and/or Qualification Trial for the Selection

of the USA (USCA-GSDCA) WUSV Championship TeamAll Helpers that: (i) are a current Member of USCA in good standing for a period of more than one (1) year; (ii) have attained Regional, National or Teaching Helper Level Classification; and (iii) have not received an Unsatisfactory Rating from a Judge, are eligible for pre-selection for a National Event. Interested Helpers who meet these requirements should send the following, at least three (3) months prior to the Event, to the Helper Program Director/Helper Committee Chairman, for review by the Helper Committee.• An email stating his/her desire and availability to be considered for pre-selection to perform the helperwork at one or more of the following: USCA’s

Sieger Show, Working Dog Championship, German Shepherd Dog National IPO-3 Championship, Qualification Trial for the Selection of the USA (USCAGSDCA) WUSV Championship Team.

• An electronic copy of the Helper’s USCA membership card with expiration date. This will be used to verify that the Helper’s USCA membership will be current during the Event he/she desires to be considered for. The Helper Program Director/Committee Chair will contact the USCA office via email to verify that the Helper is in good standing with USCA.

• An electronic copy of all pages of the Helper’s USCA Trial Helper Record Book. This will be used to verify that the Helper’s Classification Level of Regional, National or Teaching Helper will be current during the Event he/she desires to be considered for and that the Helper has not received an Unsatisfactory Rating from a Judge.

• A video link (e.g., youtube, etc.) of the Helper performing the helperwork for the entire IPO-3 protection routine. This, in conjunction with the results of the review of the Helper’s Trial Helper Record Book, will be used to assess the Helper’s ability to perform the helperwork in the National event.

After a review of the above submitted information is complete, the Helper Committee will recommend a slate of Helpers for the Event to the Executive Board for approval. Upon approval by the Executive Board, the Helper Committee will contact and confirm the Pre-Selected Helpers for the Event. The aforementioned meets the requirements of the USCA Helper Program.

Executive Board Ballots

EB Board 13-18 to Award USCA Judge Don Yelle a Permanent Full USCA Trial/Performance License

Motion: by Nathaniel Roque, Director of Judges, seconded by Michele Clubb, Secretary, to Approve a Permanent USCA Performance / Trial License for Probationary Judge Don Yelle

Background: The USCA Judges Program requires the General Board or Executive Board to pass the motion to grant / award a USCA Judges Permanent License. Since Don Yelle is eligible at this time the motion is presented to the Executive Board instead of waiting 6 months to the General Board Meeting, the GBM will still have the right to affirm this decision or request a new vote.

Don Yelle as a probationary judge has exceeded his requirements and should not have to wait another 6 months to receive his Full License.

The USCA Judges Committee recommends the approval of a Permanent Performance / Trial License for Don Yelle. He has met and exceeded all of the requirements as a probationary judge. Don has attended all Judges Colleges and been an active member of our Judges College Conference Calls and Reviews / Continuing Education Program. He has also volunteered his time to perform the long down judges duties and as a “bi richter” in tracking at the nationals. He has met the required 30 trials in less than 3 years to complete his probation.

By all accounts based in part by email and phone calls from clubs that he has judged trials and their complements of his performance and additional followup and evaluation by the DOJ he has shown himself to be an excellent representative of USCA, a fair and correct judge with the skills and knowledge to uphold the standards of the USCA Judges Program.

EB Ballot #14-18 Request to Appeal The Approval of an EAF For Summit Working Dog Club

Motion: by Michele Clubb, Secretary, on behalf of Cascade Schutzhund Verein and second by Vadim Plotsker, Vice President, request to appeal the approval of an EAF for Summit Working Dog Club by RD Hal Lymus.

Background: Cascade Schutzhund Verein requested and was granted the ability to belong to a region outside their geographical boarders in May 2013.

The Executive Board approved a motion on March 14, 2016 (EB # 07-16 Club Regional Affiliation Status see attached for motion) that outlines the “Special Exceptions” to allow clubs to maintain their status outside of their geographical boarders. This motion also sets guidelines on a club that has been moved outside of their geographical boarders that they must follow when it comes to Event Authorizations and notifications to clubs within their physical geographical boarders.

Nia Cottrell contacted myself on May 30, 2018 via email (see website for email) and requested the Executive Board appeal PNW RD Hal Lymus approval for a trial by Summit Working Dog Club scheduled for October 13, 2018 as it conflicts with Cascade Schutzhund Verein trial the same weekend. Cascade Schutzhund Verein trial was submitted and approved by MER RD Mark Scarberry on or about October 11, 2016 (see website for EAF screenshot from website with date it was submitted).

In Ms. Cottrell email she states Cascade Schutzhund Verein submitted their trial request in 2015. While checking the website for EAF’s I do find one that was submitted in 2015 however from what I can see it was never published and does not have an event number assigned. The event currently published on the website is the only one I can see that was approved and published and the event numbers do match, and that event was approved/published on October 11, 2016.

Per EB# 07-16 subsection 6.3 Cascade Schutzhund Verein had ten days to advise their geographical RD

of the approved EAF from her RD. As of today Ms. Cottrell has not provided proof this was done.

It should also be noted that I have checked both PNW Regional Guidelines and MER Regional Guidelines and neither have a rule that states only one event can be hosted on the same weekend in the respected regions.

As per Ms. Cottrell’s request I am submitting her request for appeal of Summit Working Dog’s approved trial to the Executive Board.

USCA/Canadian/SV Foreign Judges

USCA members interested in becoming a Schutzhund Judge should request an information packet from the Director of Judges. This packet details the procedure for acceptance into the program. After all facets of this original application are complete, the names of the new USCA Judge applicants will appear in two issues of Schutzhund USA. Anyone wishing to comment as to the character or qualifications of the new applicants may do so in writing to the Judges Committee Chairman, Nathaniel Roque. These written comments must be received no later than four weeks following the second publication of the new applicant’s name.

The Apprentice Judges are those who have met all training requirements. Apprentice Judge Trainees are those who still have not met the training requirement of titling one dog through a SchH3, a second dog to a SchH1, as well as obtaining an FH on a dog trained by the candidate. The apprentice trainees are yet to fulfill all requirements of the program but are currently active in training a dog toward that goal. All of the requirements for the USCA Apprentice Judge Program can be obtained by contacting the USCA Director of Judges.

The individuals listed below may officiate at USCA sanctioned trials and may award internationally recognized Schutzhund titles; BH, IPO 1-3, FH, APr 1-3, FPr (Tr)1-3, UPr (OB) 1-3, IPO V-O, STP 1-3, RH1 titles and may officiate at AD tests. Clubs wishing to schedule any of these individuals to judge may contact them directly for availability only. USCA judges must be secured by contacting your Regional Director, who in turn will contact the Director of Judges, Nathaniel Roque. This may be accomplished initially by phone, but finalization of all assignments must be in writing (Club to Regional Director to Director of Judges). *May also officiate RH2 title.

SV Judge RequestAll Clubs planning to host a SV Judge must complete the following form. The information on this form is necessary to effectively schedule and coordinate the logistics of SV Judges on assignment in the United States.
