The Time Is Now Music by Debbie Friedman (1950-2011)

Lyrics by Debbie Friedman & Tamara Ruth Cohen

The time is now We’ve gathered round So bring all your gifts

And all your burdens with you No need to hide, arms open wide

We gather as one to make a makom kadosh.

Song of the Grasses /שירת העשבים Words and music by Naomi Shemer (1930-2004)

Inspired by Rebbe Nachman of Bratslav (1772-1810)

Do know that each and every shepherd has their own tune. Do know that each and every grass has its own poem. And from the poem of the grasses a tune of a shepherd is made. How beautiful, how beautiful and pleasant to hear their poem. It's very good to pray among them and to serve God in joy And from the poem of the grasses the heart is filled and yearns. And when the poem causes the heart to fill and to yearn to the Land of Israel a great light is drawn and goes from the Land's holiness upon it. And from the poem of the grasses a tune of the heart is made.

COMPOSER FEATURE Naomi Shemer (1930—2004) was one of Israel’s most important and prolific song writers. During her lifetime, she was hailed as the “First Lady of Israeli Song.” Born Naomi Sapir, Shemer penned music and lyrics to hundreds of songs, adapted well known songs to Hebrew, and set Hebrew poetry to music. In 1983, Shemer received the Israel Prize for her contribution to Israeli culture. Several of Shemer’s songs (“Yerushalayim Shel Zahav,” “Lu Y’hi,” “Al Kol Eileh,” and others) have the quality of anthems, striking deep national and emotional chords in the hearts of Israelis. Shemer continued to write and perform until her death.

Lehrhaus Adult Education On Death and Dying with Cooperberg-Rittmaster Rabbinical Intern Steven Philp Judaism teaches: “It is better to attend a funeral than a feast” (Ecclesiastes 7:2). Why? Because what we understand about death shapes how we create lives of purpose. We will explore a range of Jewish perspectives on death and dying, drawing from biblical narratives, rabbinic text, ritual practice, and our own experiences. Thursdays, February 8, 15, 22, 6:30 – 7:30pm Spring 2018 Tuesdays, February 6, 13, 20, 27, March 6, 13, and 20 * 6:30pm: Intro to the Shabbat Morning Service 7:45pm: Intro to Hebrew Language II OR Intermediate Hebrew II Classes are open to all; * Spring classes are required for CBST Adult B’nai Mitzvah students. PRAYER for OUR COUNTRY Our God and God of our ancestors,

bless this country and all who dwell within it. Help us to experience the blessings

of our lives and circumstances, To be vigilant, compassionate, and brave. Strengthen us when we are afraid, Help us stay angry, So that our anger motivates us to action. Help us to feel our fear, So that we do not become numb. Help us to be generous with others, So that we raise each other up. Help us to be humble in our fear,

knowing that as vulnerable as we feel, there are those at greater risk, and that it is our holy work to stand with them.

Help us to taste the sweetness of liberty, To not take for granted the freedoms won

in generations past or in recent days. To heal and nourish our democracy,

that it may be like a tree planted by the water whose roots reach down to the stream; it need not fear drought when it comes, its leaves are always green (Jeremiah 17:8).

Source of all Life, Guide our leaders with righteousness, Strengthen their hearts,

but keep them from hardening. That they may use their influence and authority to

speak truth and act for justice (Isaiah 16:3-5). May all who dwell in this country

share in its bounty, enjoy its freedoms, and be protected by its laws.

May this nation use its power and wealth to be a voice for justice, peace, and equality for all who dwell on earth.

May we be strong and have courage To be bold in our action and deep in our compassion, To discern when we must listen and when we must act, To uproot bigotry, intolerance, misogyny, racism,

discrimination, and violence in all its forms, To celebrate the many faces of God reflected

in the wondrous diversity of humanity, To welcome the stranger and the immigrant

and to honor the gifts of those who seek refuge and possibility here, as they have since before this nation was born.

Let justice well up like waters, and righteousness like a mighty stream (Amos 5:24)
