TODAY DB2 is the Database Champion for SAP Customers
… if you were to come up to me and ask me would we do this again, migrate to DB2, the answer would be a clear yes. - Jim Capraro, VP GIT Colgate-Palmolive
…We are beta testing DB2 version 10 right now and the compression has gotten better again, we are going to see another 20% increase..- Tom DeJuneas, IT
Team Manager ,CCBCC

- PoC real system copy of a productive SAP Systems on comparable hardware - Oracle Compression Algorithm shows weak storage allocation and needs a lotof CPU power, so the strongest compression algorithm is not usable in a productive setup
- Performance comparison: DB2 48% better, although Oracle needed 30% more memory- Customer decided for IBm DB2 in December

Projektüberblick
• Lonza has decided in 2011 for IBM DB2• Seven SAP landscapes had to be migrated
(SRM, GTS, PI, HR, CRM, ERP, BW)
• Defined Goals:–Lower license costs for the database
–30% - 50% of reduced storage capacitiy
• Issues during migration:–SRM, PI, GTS, HR without Issues
–ERP & BW: Several Performance issues could be solved within a couple of days.(Custom code tuning – Select statement changes)

Projektüberblick
Defined goals in PH
 Lower license costs
 Reduced disk space requirement (- 30% –50%)
Achievements:
Maintenance costs can be reduced(calculated with the 11% maintenance costs of ORACLE)Oracle announced to raise the maintenance to 15% for new systems. So the difference would be even higher.
Diskspace a reduction of 40-60% could be realized

Project overview and feedback
Project could be finalized as planned
– In time
– In scope
– In Budget
 Collaboration was very good
– Consultants with the Basis team
– Within Project management
– All Business Application team member who needed to solve performance issues
 Feedback
– Project was handled very professional
– End User had almost no impact

DB2 10 Advantages for SAP ApplicationsReducing the Overall Costs (TCO)- Reduced DB storage size 40%-85%- Reduced tape capacity 50%-85%
- Reduced DB-RAM 20%-50%- Reduced log space 50%-75%- Reduced temporary space 40%-85%- Better OLTP performance 20%-30%
- Better OLAP performance 50%-75%- Recovery time objective RTO < 1min
- Recovery point objective RPO 0- Less database license (SAP OEM) 47%
Innovative Database Technology- Leading DB performance- Adjusted development with SAP- State-of-the-art database administration –
automated, integrated- Integrated high-availability and disaster-recovery –
easy, efficient- Integrated standby database solution with time
delay - Scaleout and scale-up with one source code- OLTP and OLAP systems with one source code- Integrated NLS (near-line storage) solution- SAP BW optimization with DPF/MDC- HP-UX Itanium supported- VMWare, XEN and Hyper-V supported
Strategic Partnership with SAP and DB2- Over 1000 DB2 systems at SAP
- SAP involved in the DB2 development- Roadmap synchronized line items until 2015- DB2 9.7 and DB2 10 until 2022 supported for SAP
applications- DB2 follows SAP’s „7+2“ support strategy- In 4-8 weeks available with SAP- Reduced requirement for database
upgrades/patches- Less tuning required (SAP knob)
Coca-Cola (Andrew Juarez, SAP Lead)
Compression: - DB2 9.1 with table compression reduced Oracle
database size during unicode conversion by 40%. ~50% storage saving without unicode
- DB2 9.7 with index compression +17% saving 67% storage saving.
- DB2 10 with adaptive compression + 20% saving 87% storage saving
Performance- DB2 9.1 manufacturing runs are over 65% faster than
on Oracle on same server- DB2 10 performance improved in average from 30% -
60% compared to DB2 9.7. In an extreme case SAP programs go from 30+ hours down to 2 hours
