Berlin 2012: Swiss actor Max Hubacher receives the Shooting Stars Award from British actor John Hurt

Swiss films win over the world Swiss film productions are regularly invited to the major A-category festivals in Venice, Sundance, Berlin, Cannes and Locarno – and these films have the best chances of being screened in cinemas beyond the Swiss border and on television. In 2011/2012 this proved to be true with such films as “Abrir puertas y ventanas” (Back To Stay), “Summer Games”, “Sister”, “Die Kinder vom Napf” and “The Substance.” Almost two thirds of the fiction films were coproductions with neighbouring coun-tries, including “Der Verdingbub” (The Foster Boy), which went forth to become the most popular film among audiences in Swiss cinemas for the past five years. Max Hubacher, who starred in the title role of the film, was celebrated as Shooting Star 2012 in Berlin. The year’s best film productions were awarded the Swiss Film Prize «Quartz» – which has by now become an internationally recognised brand for films made in Switzerland. The three-time «Quartz» winner – “Summer Games” – was selected as the Swiss candidate for the Oscars 2012.

Les meilleurs de l’année obtiennent le Prix du Cinéma Suisse «Quartz», distinction qui s’est établie à l’international comme marque de qualité du cinéma helvétique. Le triple lauréat du «Quartz 2012», le film «Summer Games» a été proposé par la Suisse aux Oscars 2012.

Fast zwei Drittel der Spielfilme sind Koproduktionen mit den Nachbarländern – so auch «Der Verdingbub», der in den Schweizer Kinos zum Publikumsliebling der letzten fünf Jahre avanciert. Sein Titeldarsteller Max Hubacher wird in Berlin als Shooting Star 2012 gefeiert. Die Jahresbesten erhalten als Auszeichnung den Schweizer Filmpreis «Quartz» – inzwischen ein international wahrge-nommenes Markenzeichen für Filme aus der Schweiz. Der dreifache «Quartz»-Gewinner «Summer Games» wird von der Schweiz für die Oscars 2012 vorgeschlagen.

Some 15.2 million tickets were sold in Swiss cin-emas – an increase of 0.86% compared to the previous year. Correspondingly, the attendance figures in Switzerland remained stable in 2011, a trend seen throughout Europe. A major change has, however, occurred with the screening technology in cinemas: with only 55 screens digitalised two years ago, there are now 316, meaning more than half (57%) of the cinemas are equipped for the new standards. But this figure does not necessarily indi-cate that the new technologies provide more space for high-quality artistic films and Swiss filmmak-ing. The box office was dominated by Hollywood’s film industry, which knows how to lure audiences to cinemas with sequels to popular hit series.

Plus de la moitié (57%) des salles se trouve ainsi aux normes actuel-les. L’arrivée des nouvelles technologies ne prouve cependant pas encore que davantage de place est laissée aux œuvres de grande ambition artistique ou au cinéma suisse. Le box office est dominé par l’in-dustrie hollywoodienne qui sait attirer le public avec les «sequels», les nouveaux épisodes de grands films à succès.

Noch ist der Beweis nicht erbracht, dass die neuen Techniken den künstlerisch wertvollen Filmen und dem helvetischen Filmschaffen mehr Platz verschaffen. Dominiert wird das Box Office von Hollywoods Filmindustrie, welche das Publikum mit den als «Sequels» bezeichneten Serienhits ins Kino zu locken versteht.

With the sale of over 235’000 tickets, the drama “Der Verdingbub” (The Foster Boy) climbed the ranks to become the most successful Swiss film production for the past five years. The film unfurls a dark chapter in Swiss history and was shot in Emmental, as was the case for the successful comedy hit “Die Herbstzeitlosen” (Late Bloomers, 2007). The debut film “La petite chambre” (The Little Room) established a successful career not only in Swiss cinemas, but also internationally. And the horror film “One Way Trip” went down in history as the first 3D film produced in Switzerland. The production volume was high with 26 fiction films, 11 of which were debut films. Two thirds of these films were coproductions with the neighbouring countries of Germany, France, Italy and Austria.

Le drame «Der Verdingbub» (L’enfance volée) qui se penche sur l’un des chapitres les plus sombres de l’Histoire de la Suisse récente est avec plus de 235’000 entrées le plus grand succès public en Suisse depuis cinq ans. Ce film a été tourné dans l’Emmental, comme l’était déjà la comédie «Die Herbstzeitlosen» (Les mamies font pas dans la den-telle, 2007). La première œuvre «La petite chambre» s’impose avec une carrière réussie non seulement en Suisse mais aussi à l’étranger. Le film d’horreur «One Way Trip» entre dans les annales du cinéma suisse comme premier film tourné en 3D. Avec 26 films de fiction, dont 11 premières œuvres, le niveau de production est élevé. Deux tiers des films sont des coproductions avec les pays limitrophes que sont l’Allemagne, l’Autriche, la France et l’Italie.

Das Drama «Der Verdingbub», welches ein dunk-les Kapitel jüngster Schweizer Geschichte aufrollt, ist mit über 235’000 Eintritten der erfolgreichste Schweizer Film seit fünf Jahren. Wie bereits die Erfolgskomödie «Die Herbstzeitlosen» (2007) wurde er im Emmental gedreht. Eine nicht nur in den einheimischen Kinos, sondern auch international erfolgreiche Karriere ist dem Erstlingsfilm «La petite chambre» gelungen. Der Horrorfilm «One Way Trip» geht als erste in 3D gedrehte Schweizer Produktion in die Annalen ein. Mit 26 Spielfilmen, von denen 11 Debütfilme sind, ist das Produktionsvolumen hoch. Zwei Drittel dieser Filme sind Koproduktionen mit den Nachbarländern Deutschland, Frankreich, Italien und Österreich.

2011 was an exceptional year for documentary films: 51 films were produced and released in the cinema. Eight of these exceeded the 10’000 mark. Ticket sales for documentary films totalled a quar-ter of a million, amounting to one third of the total number of admissions for Swiss film productions. The film “Vol spécial” (Special Flight), which cel-ebrated its premiere in competition in Locarno, trig-gered a debate on Switzerland’s deportation policy for asylum-seekers whose applications have been rejected. Both the debate and the film transcended national borders. Furthermore, films with local customs and traditions as the main theme – such as “Hoselupf”, “Arme Seelen” (The Revenants) or “Sentier des vaches” – attracted viewers from the respective regions who are not regular cinemagoers.

2011 est une année forte pour les documentaires. 51 films sont produits et montrés en salle. Huit d’entre eux dépassent le seuil des 10’000 entrées. Au total, un quart de million de spectateurs regarde des documentaires au cinéma – cela représente un tiers des entrées réalisées par les films suisses. «Vol spécial», projeté en première mondiale en compéti-tion à Locarno, déclenche un débat sur la pratique helvétique des reconductions hors du territoire de demandeurs d’asile déboutés. Une controverse qui, tout comme le film, traverse les frontières du pays. Des œuvres comme «Hoselupf», «Arme Seelen» ou «Sentier des vaches» qui thématisent des coutumes et traditions locales attirent dans leur région res-pective des spectateurs qui ne font pas partie des habitués des salles obscures.

2011 ist ein starker Jahrgang für Dokumentarfilme. 51 Filme werden produziert und im Kino ausgewertet. Acht überschreiten die 10’000er Marke. Insgesamt sieht sich eine Viertelmillion Zuschauerinnen und Zuschauer Dokumentarfilme im Kino an – das ist ein Drittel der Gesamteintritte für Schweizer Filme. Der in Locarno im Wettbewerb uraufge-führte Film «Vol spécial» löst eine Debatte über die Schweizerische Ausschaffungspraxis von abgewie-senen Asylbewerbern aus, die – wie auch der Film selbst – die Landesgrenzen überschreitet. Filme wie «Hoselupf», «Arme Seelen» oder «Sentier des vaches», die lokales Brauchtum und Traditionen the-matisieren, ziehen in den entsprechenden Regionen Menschen an, die nicht zu den regelmässigen Kinogängern gehören.

The quality of Swiss short film productions is evi-dent by their success at festivals: 77 short film pro-ductions – 27 of which were animation films – were honoured with awards in 2011. Monetary prizes amounting to over CHF 281’000 went to the filmma-kers. The most successful short films were the fiction films “Le miroir” (The Mirror), “yuri Lennon’s Landing On Alpha 46” and the documentary film “Kwa Heri Mandima”, with participation at more than 30 festivals in 2011 alone. Leading the anima-tion films were “La fille & le chasseur” and “Schlaf” (Sleep), with more than 50 festival invitations in 2011. The documentary film “L’ambassadeur & moi” (The Ambassador & Me) has been nominated for the European Film Award and has already begun a promising career. Numerous short film productions from Switzerland were purchased by international broadcast stations: for example, “Romance” by Genevan doyen Georges Schwizgebel proved to be especially enlightening.

La qualité des courts métrages helvétiques est attestée par le succès des films dans les festivals: 77 courts métrages – dont 27 films d’animation – ont été primés en 2011. Ce sont ainsi plus de CHF 281’000 qui sont redistribués aux créateurs et créatrices de films courts. Les fictions «Le miroir», «yuri Lennon’s Landing On Alpha 46» et le docu-mentaire «Kwa Heri Mandima» ont avec plus de 30 sélections – rien qu’en 2011 – tiré leur épingle du jeu l’an passé. Côté films d’animation, les locomotives étaient avec plus de 50 sélections pour la seule année 2011 «La fille & le chasseur» et «Schlaf». Nommé pour le Prix du Cinéma Européen (EFA), le documentaire «L’ambassadeur & moi» est à suivre de près. De nombreux courts métrages suisses ont par ailleurs été achetés par des diffuseurs étran-gers, l’exemple de «Romance» du maître genevois Georges Schwizgebel à ce propos est édifiant.

Preisgelder in der Höhe von über CHF 281’000 fliessen an die Filmschaffenden. Die Spielfilme «Le miroir», «yuri Lennon’s Landing On Alpha 46» und der Dokumentarfilm «Kwa Heri Mandima» sind mit über 30 Festivalbeteiligungen allein im Jahr 2011 die erfolgreichsten Kurzfilme. Bei den Trickfilmen sind «La fille & le chasseur» und «Schlaf» mit über 50 Festivaleinladungen im Jahr 2011 die Lokomotiven. Der Dokumentarfilm «L’ambassadeur & moi» ist für den Europäischen Filmpreis nominiert und hat eine vielversprechende Karriere begonnen. Zahlreiche Schweizer Kurzfilme werden von ausländischen Sendern angekauft. Das Beispiel von «Romance» des Genfer Altmeisters Georges Schwizgebel ist dabei besonders auf-schlussreich.

swiss film prize The 15th award ceremony of the Swiss Film Prize «Quartz» was held for the fourth time in the KKL Luzern on March 17, 2012. The award ceremony is a gala event of the Federal Office of Culture, in collaboration with SRG SSR, the media partner, and with SWISS FILMS. This year’s victorious film was Rolando Colla’s fiction film “Summer Games”, garner-ing three prizes: Best Fiction Film, Best Screenplay and Best Cinematography; the latter was awarded for the first time this year. This year’s best actors were Carla Juri, Stefan Kurt and Max Hubacher. The prize-winners were selected in nine categories by the members of the Swiss Film Academy. In addi-tion, film director and author Rolf Lyssy received an Honorary Award for his lifetime achievement in film. SRG television and radio programmes show-cased Swiss filmmaking for an entire evening.

La 15e édition du Prix du Cinéma Suisse «Quartz» a eu lieu le 17 mars 2012 au KKL de Lucerne et ce pour la quatrième fois. Il s’agit d’une manifestation de l’Office fédéral de la culture en collaboration avec le partenaire média SSR SRG et SWISS FILMS. Avec trois récompenses, le film italophone «Summer Games» (Jeux d’été) est le grand vainqueur de la soirée. Il remporte coup sur coup les prix du «meilleur film de fiction», du «meilleur scénario» et de la «meilleure photographie» – attribué pour la première fois. Parmi les meilleur(e)s de l’année on compte la comédienne Carla Juri et les comédiens Stefan Kurt et Max Hubacher. Les lauréat(e)s dans neuf catégories ont été choisis par les membres de l’Académie du Cinéma Suisse. Le réalisateur et auteur Rolf Lyssy obtient le Prix d’honneur pour l’œuvre de sa vie. Les programmes de télévision et de radio de la SSR placent durant une soirée entière le cinéma au centre de leur programme.

Die 15. Verleihung des Schweizer Filmpreises «Quartz» findet am 17. März 2012 zum vierten Mal im KKL Luzern statt. Sie ist eine Veranstaltung des Bundesamts für Kultur, in Zusammenarbeit mit der Medienpartnerin SRG SSR und SWISS FILMS. Mit gleich drei Preisen ist der italienischsprachige Spielfilm «Summer Games» von Rolando Colla der Siegerfilm des Abends. Er wird als «Bester Spielfilm», für «Bestes Drehbuch» und mit dem zum ersten Mal verliehenen Preis «Beste Kamera» ausgezeich-net. Zu den Jahresbesten zählen die Schauspieler Carla Juri, Stefan Kurt und Max Hubacher. Die Preisträgerinnen und Preisträger wurden in neun Kategorien von den Mitgliedern der Schweizer Filmakademie gewählt. Regisseur und Autor Rolf Lyssy erhält einem Ehrenpreis für sein Lebenswerk. Die Fernseh- und Radioprogramme der SRG stellen einen Abend lang das Schweizer Filmschaffen ins Zentrum ihres Programms.

FEStiValSSince the film festival in Locarno 2011, which honoured the fiction film debut “Abrir puertas y ventanas” (Back To Stay) by Swiss-Argentine director Milagros Mumenthaler with the Golden Leopard and further awards, the presence of Swiss film productions at the major A-category festivals has remained constant: Rolando Colla’s “Summer Games” was screened at the Mostra in Venice; Daniel Zimmermann’s short experimental film “Stick Climbing” was screened in Sundance; Ursula Meier’s film “Sister” was invited to the Berlinale – and also honoured with a Silver Bear; the fiction film “Opération Libertad” by Nicolas Wadimoff and Basil Da Cunha’s medium-length film “Os vivos tambem choram” were both screened in Cannes. SWISS FILMS facilitated the participation of these and many other film productions at international festivals with active mediation, financial support and the produc-tion of subtitled film prints, totalling CHF 308’000 in 2011. ProgrammES28 film programmes were screened abroad in 2011. 19 of these were at festivals (68%) and seven in film archives (25%). The promotion agency compiled these film programmes in close collaboration with select partners that have a renowned network, an established reputation and a national presence. The promotion agency has worked intensively in focus regions over a longer period of time together with other partners such as the Swiss Arts Council and Presence Switzerland: in 2011, there were three programmes in China (2008-11) and seven in Latin America (2010-12). Involved in the programme selection is the respective platform with its specific profile, SWISS FILMS with its knowledge as regards content and curatorial competence and further part-ners such as Swiss film schools or film festivals.

Depuis le festival de Locarno 2011, où «Abrir puer-tas y ventanas», le premier long métrage de la Suisse-Argentine Milagros Mumenthaler, a obtenu le Léopard d’or et d’autres récompenses, la présence aux grands festivals de catégorie A se poursuit: la Mostra de Venise programme «Summer Games» (Jeux d’été) de Rolando Colla, à Sundance, c’est le court métrage expérimental «Stick Climbing» de Daniel Zimmermann, la Berlinale invite «L’enfant d’en haut» – Ursula Meier y reçoit un Ours d’argent – et à Cannes le long métrage «Opération Libertad» de Nicolas Wadimoff ainsi que le court métrage «Os vivos tambem choram» (Les vivants pleurent aussi) de Basil Da Cunha sont à l’affiche. Dans les pays prioritaires, SWISS FILMS s’engage sur une période plus longue, en partenariat avec Pro Helvetia et Présence Suisse: en Chine (2008-2011) trois programmes ont eu lieu en 2011, alors qu’en Amérique latine (2010-2012) sept sont réalisés. La sélection des films s’effectue entre les plateformes respectives au profil spécifique, SWISS FILMS avec sa connaissance des films et ses compétences de programmation et d’autres partenaires impliqués, comme des écoles de cinéma ou des festivals de cinéma suisses.

The positive trend for international distribution of Swiss film productions in recent years remained steady in 2011: 17 fiction films and 12 documentary films established distributors or television timeslots in one or several European countries, with some in North America, Latin America, Asia and Australia as well. Among the fiction film productions, Ursula Meier’s “Sister” experienced outstanding success with an extensive theatrical release already in 21 countries. In addition, the two multi-award-winning films – “Abrir puertas y ventanas” (Back To Stay) by Milagros Mumenthaler and “Summer Games” by Rolando Colla – have been screened in cinemas in several countries. Documentary films have also sparked interest among distributors, particularly Alice Schmid’s “Die Kinder vom Napf” and “The Substance” by Martin Witz – the latter also in English-speaking countries such as in Great Britain and the USA. Moreover, television broadcasters have shown sustained interest in Swiss documentary films.

La tendance positive concernant la diffusion inter-nationale des films suisses se poursuit en 2011: 17 films de fiction et 12 documentaires trouvent un distributeur cinéma ou un diffuseur TV dans un ou plusieurs pays européens. Plusieurs œuvres sont également à voir en Amérique du Nord, en Amérique latine, en Asie ou en Australie. Parmi les films de fiction c’est «L’enfant d’en haut» de Ursula Meier qui se démarque avec une distribution déjà assurée dans les salles de 21 pays. Les multi-primés «Abrir puertas y ventanas» de Milagros Mumenthaler et «Summer Games» (Jeux d’été) de Rolando Colla sortent également sur plusieurs territoires. En ce qui concerne les documentaires, ce sont les films «Die Kinder vom Napf» de Alice Schmid et «The Substance» de Martin Witz qui trouvent une recon-naissance particulière – également dans les ter-ritoires anglophones comme l’Angleterre et les Etats-Unis pour ce dernier. Les chaînes de télévision manifestent toujours un grand intérêt pour les docu-mentaires suisses.

Die positive Tendenz beim internationalen Vertrieb der Schweizer Filme in den letzten Jahren hält 2011 an: 17 Spiel- und 12 Dokumentarfilme finden Kinoverleiher oder Fernsehsendeplätze in einem oder mehreren europäischen Ländern. Einige Filme sind auch in Nordamerika, Lateinamerika, Asien oder Australien zu sehen. Bei den Spielfilmen zeigt «Sister» von Ursula Meier einen hervorragenden Erfolg mit einer flächendeckenden Kinoauswertung in bereits 21 Ländern. Auch die beiden vielfach prämierten Filme «Abrir puertas y ventanas» von Milagros Mumenthaler und «Summer Games» von Rolando Colla kommen in mehreren Ländern in die Kinos. Beim Vertrieb der Dokumentarfilme finden «Die Kinder vom Napf» von Alice Schmid und «The Substance» von Martin Witz besondere Beachtung – letzterer auch in englischsprachigen Territorien wie in Grossbritannien und den USA. Bei den Fernsehsendern besteht ein anhaltendes grosses Interesse für Schweizer Dokumentarfilme.

Film distribution, intermediation and issues concern-ing international promotion have been predominantly factored out in discussions concerning the new film support concepts 2012-15. This somewhat artificial separation of film support and promotion seems rather paradoxical in view of the fact that films only truly exist when an audience sees them.

Two concerns

The promotion agency joined in the debate with two concerns: on the one hand, the alarming fact that short films were disregarded as a minor market-oriented aspect of film production in discussions on film support concepts. On the other hand, favoured by all sides, SWISS FILMS supported extending success-related film support to cultural events, and provided an expert opinion on behalf of the par-ticipating industry representatives for broadening “Succès Cinéma.”

Representatives of SWISS FILMS continuously delivered facts or arguments and were repeatedly involved in discussions aimed at taking the inter-national presence of Swiss film productions into account, an aspect which was somewhat forgotten when placed alongside commercial expectations.

Support for export and Succès festivals

At the moment, a few principles are anchored in the film support concepts for the next four years, principles for which SWISS FILMS gladly takes up the cause: financial support for distribution of Swiss film productions in European countries – suspended in 2011 due to cutbacks – is now a component part of film support on the federal level. With the success-related film support “Succès Cinéma,” participation of Swiss film productions at international film festi-vals and the winning of prizes will now be rewarded just as much as success at the cinema box office. The federal government promises increased support for short film productions, an important component for emerging filmmakers. However, omitting the incentive for their release in cinemas with “Succès Cinéma” could not be averted.

Redefining success

The new support concepts are based on the under-standing that too much emphasis was placed on “blockbusters made in Switzerland” in the previous period, thereby jeopardizing the wealth of diversity. Success – and thus the political adoption of national film support – is not only measured by ticket sales and an effective media presence of film stars. It is also expressed in the international awareness and appreciation of filmmaking. It is important not only that individual works appear on the most important platforms – the major film festivals in Berlin, Cannes or Venice – but also that filmmakers and their works come to be known. SWISS FILMS carries out its pro-motion work in both directions, with the international breakthrough for emerging talents presenting the greatest challenge.

Breakthrough for emerging talents

The Silver Bear and Honourable Mention for Ursula Meier at the Berlinale with her film “Sister” – to cite this outstanding example – were preceded by meticulous reviewing and tedious processing of information, to which SWISS FILMS made a sig-nificant contribution. years in advance, attention had already been drawn to the short films by a young graduate of a film school in Brussels. But it was her first feature-length film for television “Des épaules solides” (Strong Shoulders) that put her talent particularly to the test at international festivals. Her film was screened in a section in Cannes. This was followed by – again in Cannes – the much-acclaimed premiere of her film for the cinema “Home” in the Critics’ Week. On the initiative of and in collaboration with SWISS FILMS, Ursula Meier’s films have been screened in thematic programmes and retrospec-tives for the past eight years: in Germany, France, Italy, Austria, Poland, Portugal, Spain, Turkey, China, Korea, India, Japan, Latin America and in the USA. This has succeeded in paving the way for the young director to stand in the limelight of the international film scene: be it with the historical reference to works by Alain Tanner, she once worked as his assistant; or within the context of the comeback of films from French-speaking Switzerland, led by Lionel Baier, Jean-Stéphane Bron, Ursula Meier and Frédéric Mermoud.

Bearing in mind the unpredictability of the audience’s reaction in one’s own country, it is reasonable to sup-plement and reinforce one’s position by playing the international film culture card. With its committed, competent and networked staff members, SWISS FILMS gets things moving on the film landscape in Switzerland, while proving with increasing success its credo of “moving movies.”

La diffusion des films, le relais de la création ciné-matographique suisse et les questions de promotion internationale ont été mises entre parenthèses au cours des discussions sur les régimes d’encourage-ment du cinéma pour la période 2012–2015. Cette distinction un peu artificielle entre le soutien au cinéma et sa promotion semble paradoxale si l’on considère que les films ne commencent à exister qu’au moment où le public les découvre.

Deux requêtes

L’agence de promotion s’est engagée dans le débat avec deux soucis en tête: tout d’abord, elle était pré-occupée par le fait que la création de courts métra-ges – vu son aspect peu commercial au stade de la production – était occultée dans l’ensemble des dis-cussions sur les régimes d’encouragement. Ensuite, étant donné les demandes émanant de toutes parts, SWISS FILMS a choisi de défendre l’extension aux manifestations culturelles des critères d’attribution de soutiens alloués en fonction du succès; pour ce faire, sur mandat de représentants de la branche, elle a réalisé une expertise sur la possibilité d’éten-dre la formule de «Succès Cinéma».

Sans relâche, les représentants de SWISS FILMS ont fourni des données ou défendu des arguments; au cours de nombreuses discussions, ils se sont engagés pour que, sur le plan du rayonnement, la dimension internationale du cinéma suisse soit reconnue. En effet, elle était quelque peu éclipsée par les attentes économiques.

Aide à l’exportation et Succès Festivals

Pour ces quatre prochaines années, plusieurs prin-cipes ont été ancrés dans les régimes d’encourage-ment du cinéma. SWISS FILMS se flatte ainsi d’avoir inscrit au tableau de chasse plusieurs points positifs: la promotion de la distribution des films suisses en Europe – elle avait été interrompue en 2011 en raison d’économies budgétaires – fait dorénavant partie des tâches de soutien dévolues à la Confédération. La participation de films suisses à des festivals internationaux et les prix décernés sont dès main-tenant retenus comme critères déterminants dans le système de récompense «Succès Cinéma » en sus de la réussite en termes de spectateurs payants aux caisses des salles. La Confédération promet aussi d’intensifier son soutien aux courts métrages, élément formateur essentiel pour la relève cinéma-tographique. Cependant, il n’a pas été possible de maintenir le principe d’une intégration des courts métrages à «Succès Cinéma» afin de favoriser leur diffusion en salle.

Redéfinition du succès

Les nouveaux régimes d’encouragement du ciné-ma partent d’un constat: au cours de la période précédente, le phénomène «Blockbuster made in Switzerland» a trop été mis en avant en courant ainsi le risque de voir la diversité s’étioler. Le succès – et dans la foulée, la propension des politiques à envi-sager un soutien national au cinéma – ne se mesure pas uniquement au nombre d’entrées vendues ou à la présence efficace sous les feux de la rampe médiatique de quelques figures en vue du cinéma.

Le succès s’exprime également sur le plan interna-tional: comment la création suisse est-elle perçue, de quelle manière nos cinéastes sont-ils reconnus? Il est indispensable dans ce cadre que des films soient projetés sur les écrans les plus cotés – les grands festivals tels que Cannes, Berlin ou Venise – mais il est tout aussi important que des auteurs et leurs œuvres soient connus. SWISS FILMS effectue son travail promotionnel dans ces deux directions, le plus grand défi consistant à accompagner la percée internationale de nouveaux talents.

Faire éclore de nouveaux talents

L’Ours d’argent décerné à Ursula Meier lors de la Berlinale pour son film «L’enfant d’en haut» (Sister) et les louanges ayant accompagné ce prix – pour donner un exemple frappant – ont été précédés d’un travail de longue haleine, action minutieuse de mise en valeur à laquelle SWISS FILMS a participé de manière primordiale. Il y a des années, l’attention a été focalisée sur les courts métrages de cette jeune étudiante sortie d’une école de cinéma à Bruxelles. C’est principalement sa première fiction «Des épau-les solides», tournée pour la télévision qui a permis d’éprouver son talent lors de festivals internationaux. Ce film a ainsi été projeté à Cannes dans une section parallèle. Elle poursuit son ascension – toujours à Cannes – avec la première très remarquée de son long métrage «Home» à la Semaine de la critique. Ces huit dernières années, à l’initiative de SWISS FILMS et avec sa collaboration, les films d’Ursula Meier ont été projetés lors de rétrospectives et de programmes thématiques dans de nombreux pays: Allemagne, France, Italie, Autriche, Pologne, Portugal, Espagne, Turquie, Chine, Corée, Inde, Japon, Amérique du Sud et Etats-Unis. Cette jeune réalisatrice a ainsi pu accéder à la scène internationale et se voir pré-sentée dans une perspective historique avec l’œuvre d’Alain Tanner, dont elle a été un temps l’assistante, ou dans le contexte du renouveau du cinéma romand avec comme autres principaux protagonistes Lionel Baier, Jean-Stéphane Bron et Frédéric Mermoud.

Sachant qu’il est impossible de prévoir les réactions du public dans son propre pays, il est tout à fait judicieux et complémentaire de favoriser les mani-festations culturelles à l’étranger dans le domaine du cinéma. Grâce à ses réseaux bien implantés, et disposant d’une équipe engagée de collaboratrices et de collaborateurs compétents, SWISS FILMS fait bouger le paysage cinématographique suisse et met en œuvre, avec un succès croissant, son credo «moving movies».

Diese etwas künstliche Trennung zwischen Filmförderung und Promotion scheint paradox angesichts der Tatsache, dass Filme erst dann existieren, wenn sie das Publikum sieht.

Zwei Anliegen

Die Promotionsagentur schaltete sich in die Debatten mit zwei Anliegen ein: Einerseits beunruhigte, dass das Kurzfilmschaffen als weniger marktorientierter Aspekt der Filmproduktion in der Auseinandersetzung rund um die Förderkonzepte unterging. Andererseits unterstützte SWISS FILMS die von allen Seiten gewünschte Ausdehnung der erfolgsabhängigen Filmförderung auf kulturelle Anlässe und erstellte im Auftrag der beteiligten Branchenvertreter eine Expertise für ein erweitertes «Succès Cinéma».

Die Vertreter von SWISS FILMS lieferten unablässig Fakten oder Argumente und engagierten sich in den zahlreichen Diskussionen für eine Berücksichtigung der internationalen Ausstrahlung des Schweizer Films, die neben den wirtschaftlichen Erwartungen bisweilen ein wenig vergessen ging.

Unterstützung für Export und Succès Festivals

In den Konzepten für die Filmförderung der nächsten vier Jahre sind nun ein paar Prinzipien verankert, welche sich SWISS FILMS gerne auf die eigene Fahne schreibt: Die Förderung des Verleihs von Schweizer Filmen im europäischen Ausland – 2011 aus Spargründen unterbrochen – ist nun Bestandteil der Filmförderung des Bundes. Die Teilnahme von Schweizer Filmen an internationalen Filmfestivals und die Auszeichnung mit Preisen werden jetzt bei der erfolgsabhängigen Filmförderung «Succès Cinéma»

ebenso belohnt wie der Erfolg an der Kinokasse. Der Bund verspricht eine verstärkte Förderung der für den filmischen Nachwuchs bedeutenden Kurzfilme. Die Streichung des Anreizes für ihre Auswertung in den Kinos durch «Succès Cinéma» konnte allerdings nicht abgewendet werden.

Neudefinition von Erfolg

Die neuen Förderkonzepte beruhen auf der Einsicht, dass in der vorhergehenden Periode zu stark auf «Blockbuster made in Switzerland» gesetzt wurde und dabei der Reichtum der Vielfalt verloren zu gehen drohte. Der Erfolg – und somit die politische Akzeptanz einer nationalen Filmförderung – misst sich nicht nur in verkauften Kinokarten und medien-wirksamen Auftritten der Filmprominenz. Er drückt sich ebenfalls in der internationalen Wahrnehmung und Anerkennung des Filmschaffens aus. Dabei ist wichtig, dass sowohl einzelne Werke auf den wichtigsten Bühnen – den grossen Filmfestivals in Berlin, Cannes oder Venedig – aufscheinen, als auch Filmschaffende und ihr Werk bekannt werden. SWISS FILMS leistet ihre Promotionsarbeit in beiden Richtungen, wobei der internationale Durchbruch von neuen Talenten die grösste Herausforderung ist.

Durchbruch neuer Talente

Dem Silbernen Bären und der lobenden Erwähnung von Ursula Meier an der Berlinale für ihren Film «Sister» («L’enfant d’en haut») – um dieses heraus-ragende Beispiel anzuführen – ist eine minutiöse, langatmige Aufbauarbeit vorausgegangen, für wel-che SWISS FILMS einen wichtigen Beitrag geleistet hat. Die Aufmerksamkeit konnte bereits vor Jahren auf die junge Absolventin einer Filmschule in Brüssel mit ihren Kurzfilmen gelenkt werden. Aber vor allem der fürs Fernsehen gedrehte erste lange Film «Des épaules solides» ermöglichte es, ihr Talent auf den Prüfstein der internationalen Festivals zu stellen. Ihr Film war in Cannes in einer Nebenreihe zu sehen. Es folgte – wiederum in Cannes – die viel beachtete Premiere des Kinofilms «Home» in der Kritikerwoche. Auf Initiative und in Zusammenarbeit mit SWISS FILMS wurden während der letzten acht Jahre Ursula Meiers Filme im Rahmen thematischer Programme und in Retrospektiven gezeigt: in Deutschland, Frankreich, Italien, Österreich, Polen, Portugal, Spanien und in der Türkei, in China, Korea, Indien, Japan, Lateinamerika und in den USA. Es ist gelungen, der jungen Regisseurin den Weg ins Rampenlicht der internationalen Filmszene zu ebnen, sei es im historischen Bezug zum Werk von Alain Tanner, dessen Assistentin sie einst war, sei es im Kontext des Comebacks des Westschweizer Kinos mit seinen Protagonisten Lionel Baier, Jean-Stéphane Bron, Ursula Meier und Frédéric Mermoud.

Mit Blick auf die Unvorhersehbarkeit der Publikums-reaktionen im eigenen Land ist es sinnvoll, ergän-zend und verstärkend auf die filmkulturelle Karte im Ausland zu setzen. Mit ihren engagierten, kom-petenten und gut vernetzten Mitarbeiterinnen und Mitarbeitern bringt SWISS FILMS Bewegung in die Schweizer Filmlandschaft und stellt mit wachsendem Erfolg ihr Credo «moving movies» unter Beweis.
