    Sebastian Vettel, Red Bull

    2012 Qualifying - 6th, 2012

    Race - 22nd

Monza is the fastest circuitof the year. The track itselfis in principle only made upof straights and chicanes.Because of this we reachthe fastest top speed of the

year at Monza, getting up to330 km/h. The accelerationthrough the Parabolica is abalancing act - if you makethe smallest error then you willslide straight into the gravelbefore you know it.

This track brings back greatmemories for me, mainly from

my first win there in 2008 withToro Rosso. I cant describethe feeling of standing on thetop of the podium for the firsttime, and Monza was one ofthe best places to experienceit because of the thousandsof passionate fans that standbeneath, it gives you goosebumps.

    Mark Webber, Red Bull2012 Qualifying - 11th, 2012

    Race - 20th

I like Monza a lot becauseits very Formula One interms of its history and itsatmosphere. All of the greatshave raced there and I havean affinity with Italians frommy Minardi days. The track

is one of a kind, its anincredibly fast circuit withhigh top speeds, so theres alot of heavy braking. Monzahas never been that kind tome; Ive had a few retirementsand have never finished onthe podium, so I want to get agood result there this year!

The Tifosi really make theatmosphere of the weekend, they go ballistic and theyrevery passionate about acertain red team. They willclimb anything to get agood view: they sit in trees,on billboards and after thesecond Lesmo they sit on the

old banking with their feethanging over the barrier.Overall, Monza is one ofthe races that I recommendpeople go to.

    Kimi Raikkonen, Lotus

    2012 Qualifying - 8th, 2012

    Race - 5th

Its true that I have neverwon in Italy. For one reason

or another things just haventworked out for me, but itdoesnt mean I cant drive thetrack. Just because I have notwon at a circuit in the pastit doesnt mean that I wontwin or get a good result therein the future. It is true that Ihave previously had somevery competitive weekends

there - once or twice I havebeen close to the win - butsomething has always gonewrong. Hopefully we will havea real chance to fight for thatvictory this time.

Monzas a historical placewith a unique design wherewe achieve very high speeds. Its a real challenge foreveryone to be running sofast and a really good feelingin the car. Its the home ofthe Tifosi and there will be alot of Finnish fans there too.The atmosphere is just out ofreach for every other GrandPrix. Its great to go there with

everything working well inyour car and see how quicklyyou can go. It s the placewhere we go really, reallyfast.

Monza always gives a greatchallenge. Its so differentcompared with the moremodern circuits as the layoutmeans the car needs to be set

up dif ferently. To go fast atMonza you need a car that isgood aerodynamically, stableover the kerbs, and has astrong engine as we are usingfull throttle for most of the lap.I think we should be prettygood in those areas, but wewont know exactly how gooduntil we get out on track.

Its a unique circuit with thehigh speeds achieved thereand everyone will be runningthe lowest level of downforcewe see all year. Lowdownforce has not alwaysbeen the best for our car, but

the factory has been workinghard to get more speed andstability for us with somechanges to the car. Let s waitand see how the car goes onFriday morning and then wellhave a better idea of whatcan be achieved.

    Romain Grosjean, Lotus

    2012 Qualifying - n/a, 2012Race - n/a

Its a race I wasnt allowedto contest last season and asa racing driver all you wantto do is race, so I cant waitto take to the track for thefirst time in practice on Fridaymorning. Its a very historicvenue; a beautiful circuit in afantastic location and racing

there is always great. Its aspecial feeling when you areblasting through the parkalong the Monza straights, and there are so many reallyenthusiastic fans there. I haveto admit, though, it s not onlythe racing Im looking forwardto as Italian cuisine is superb.Ill be visiting a couple ofrestaurants during my stay

For the designers, you needto have a car thats veryslippery through the air. Thenfor the engineers, you have tomake the correct decision ongearing to make the most ofthe slippery car and enginepower along the straights. Forthe driver in the car, there are

a couple of heavy brakingareas where you are slowingfrom the highest speeds ofthe year, so you have to becareful to get your brakingright otherwise you canovershoot the corner. You seethat quite a few times over the

    weekend.

It can be quite hot theresometimes and it can be hardon the tyres. Considering thatthis is where we seem to havean advantage with our car, lets hope for both! You usethe kerbs quite a bit, whichlooks good on the slow motion

cameras but you certainlyknow about it in the car!Basically, it s a pretty greattrack.

    Eric Boullier, Lotus team

    principal

Monzas a very differentcircuit from Spa and wehave an equally differentaerodynamic package for the

car. The weather is usuallybetter in Italy than we saw inBelgium this year so that couldhelp us. We certainly expectbetter performance and resultsthan we saw last time out.

Alan Permane, Lotus tracksideoperations directorTheres certainly nothing(about Monza) which jumpsup and causes us any greatconcerns. You need anaerodynamically efficientcar - which we have - anda powerful engine whichRenault supplies us with. Youalso need a car that has goodchange of direction for theinterruptions to the straights. Some of the challenges of

Monza have diminishedover time; an example beingthe kerbs which are not asaggressive as they oncewere. You still need to havethe suspension sufficientlycompliant to enable kerbusage, but it s not as much

of a consideration as before.(A longer chassis) is certainlysomething we have lookedat with the lessons learntthis season and we couldsee a longer wheelbaseconfiguration make anappearance in Monza.

    Nico Hulkenberg, Sauber

    2012 Qualifying -24th, 2012Race - 21st

Monza is a track with a lot ofhistory and the only true high-speed circuit of the season.I still remember sealing myGP2 title there in 2009. Afterthe race on Sunday morningI was the champion. Monzarequires a low-downforceconfiguration, which can make

the car quite tricky to drivewhen braking from 340 km/hdown to speeds of about 60km/h in the chicanes. Its avery nice race with a goodatmosphere in the Parcodi Monza where a lot ofpassionate Italian fans cheeron the Scuderia Ferrari. I enjoydriving there, as its a simplelayout but its not as easyas it looks. There are sometechnical bits and chicanesand you really have to masterthe kerbs.

Monza is a great track, andvery di fferent to Spa. Its

    14/6614 Ve loPOINT Quarter ly Vo l . 1 Issue 1

important to consider that.Coming from a track like Spa,we need to adapt to Monza interms of driving style, strategyand set-up. It will be a crucialweekend, because stability inslow corners is important and, unfortunately, this is where

weve been struggling. Wehave to focus on that and tryto improve. My favourite partof the track is the VarianteAscari, a left-right-leftcombination. Its very quick,

you have to get the right line, react quickly to the kerbs andthe bumps, and it s fun. Ourpace is good, but now we

need to complement that withthe right decisions. I havegreat memories of Monza, asI won the Formula BMW andGP3 titles there. I remembervery well my pole position lapthere in GP3, this point madethe difference and I went onto win the championship, so itwas very special.

Tom McCullough, Sauberhead of track engineeringMonza is a unique challengefor the drivers and engineersas the circuit efficiencyrequires our lowest dragconfiguration of the season. The track is well known for itslong straights. The majorityof the grip-limited timecomes from medium-speedcornering and two lower-speed chicanes. The track ispretty bumpy in some areasand you need to be able touse the kerbs, so the ridequality is also an importantfactor. The track tends tofavour strategies with lessstops because of the lowfuel effect and the time you

lose in the pit lane. We havesome further developments tobe tested. Again, Pirelli hasselected the medium and hardtyre compounds. Coming fromSpa we are confident we canfight for points in this finalEuropean race.

    Jenson Button, McLaren

    2012 Qualifying - 2nd, 2012

    Race - DNF

Ive always loved Monza. Ireally enjoy circuits that havea bit of history to them, andMonza has that in abundance- its one of the greatest trackson the calendar. The place

is unique: ever since we lostthe old Hockenheim, thishas been the only place onthe calendar where you run areally super-low downforceconfiguration. And you canfeel it - the car acceleratesup to speed incrediblyquickly, feels skittish andloose when youre runningflat-out, and can be tricky

and unpredictable underbraking. But that s what makesthe place a special kind ofchallenge, and I really enjoythat. When you have thecar hooked up beneath you,

you get into a special kindof rhythm around Monza:

youre going so fast that thewhole lap just flows together.Theres nowhere quite like it.So its really appropriate thatMcLaren will be celebratingits 50th anniversary in thepaddock over the Monzaweekend. Both names aresynonymous with motorsporthistory - you couldnt imagineFormula One without them -so Ill be hoping for a strongresult to show the strength

and depth that we have as ateam.

    Sergio Perez, McLaren

    2012 Qualifying - 13th, 2012

    Race - 2nd

Monza is probably the mostbeautiful circuit in Formula

One - its just so historic;from the moment you arrive,

you can feel it s just differentfrom any other place wevisit. In fact, I had one of mybest races in Formula One atMonza last year - everythingcame right on Sundayafternoon, I looked after thetyres beautifully and overtook

Fernando Alonso on my wayto finishing second, whichequals my best-ever result inthe sport. That was a fantasticday.

After the disappointmentof Spa, where we had thepace to score points, Imkeen to get another shot. Asin Hungary and Belgium, we

dont expect to have a carthatll be capable of fightingright at the front, but I hopewell be scrapping for pointspositions. Thats always fun, because then its really downto the team and the driver tomaximise every opportunity onthe day. When youre racinghard like that, a good lapin quali or a clever strategyin the race can make all thedifference to your result - andthats great to experience. So,as always, Ill be looking topush on every lap.

    Martin Whitmarsh, McLaren

    team principal

year and it would be good tofinish the European season ona positive. Wed put in strongperformances in the threepractice sessions in Spa butwe were unlucky, both withthe call to the weighbridge inQ1 and the oil leak in the race

so Monza gives us a chance tomove straight on and put thatbad luck behind us.

Im in the simulator atLeafield before we arrivein Monza, so well have achance to try a few setupoptions before we get to thetrack. Well be running the

low-downforce package forthis race and the main focuswill be on finding a setup thatgives us maximum straight-line speed and a car that wecan really attack the kerbswith. Thats important for laptime, particularly in T3 andT7, as you need to be ableto minimise the time in thecorners by pushing the car

over the kerbs, so havingthe right mechanical setup iscrucial. Well also be workinga lot on braking stability -brake wear and cooling areboth pretty manageable atMonza, but it s important tohave a car thats behavingconsistently in the brakingzones as that s where you canmake up, and lose, time.

    Giedo van der Garde,

    Caterham

    2012 Qualifying - n/a, 2012

    Race - n/a

Our last European race ofthe season is Monza, anotherclassic Grand Prix venue anda track where Ive won in bothFormula Renault 3.5 and in

    VeloPOINT Quarter ly Vo l . 1 Issue 1 15

weekend for the wholeVodafone McLaren Mercedesteam, as itll be the racewhere we celebrate our 50thanniversary - a landmark forany sporting organisation, let alone a Grand Prix team.Since the formation of Bruce

McLaren Motor Racing Ltdin September 1963, and ourFormula One debut at the1966 Monaco Grand Prix,no F1 team has won moreraces (182) than McLaren - anincredible record.

Its appropriate that well bemarking the passage of time at

a circuit that is both venerableand yet eternally evergreen: interms of history, nothing reallycomes close to Monza in termsof capturing the spirits past ofmotor racing. Yet, its also thefastest racetrack in FormulaOne, a temple to raw speed, and a circuit that will alwaysdeserve its place on thecalendar. It s richly evocative,

and a place that I love. Wehave some special events andsurprises planned to markour anniversary, but itll beMonza itself that will make theweekend unique.

    Charles Pic, Caterham

    2012 Qualifying - 21st, 2012

    Race - 16th

Monzas a great place torace F1 cars. Its so quick, theatmosphere is amazing (eventhough it s almost only Ferrarisupporters out there!) andits a track that has a lot ofhistory, some of which you cansee in the old banking on theway out of the track to remind

you what it used to be like. Its our last race in Europe this

GP2. After the last couple ofraces Ill go to Monza feelingpositive about the next raceand the rest of the season. The whole team had a lot ofpraise for what we did in Spa,particularly taking advantageof the condit ions on Saturday,

and its good to see peopleunderstanding that what weredoing now is exactly what wesaid we would do this year -learn, improve and deliver theresults we want. Fourteenth inHungary and both qualifyingand the race in Spa show howthe package is coming on andits a good feeling for me and

    the whole team.

Moving on to Monza - itsa track that could suit us inthe fight with our nearestcompetitors. Its often hotand its the quickest track ofthe year, one where we runvery low-downforce settingsand that should suit our car.Last year the team was pretty

competitive and well aimto make sure we are again. If it s not hot and we haveanything like the conditionswe did in Spa then weveshown we can take advantageof unpredictable weather, and even though another P3in Q1 might be unlikely, westill know we can be boldand aggressive when theresa chance to surprise a fewpeople. Maybe our nextchance will be Monza - if notIm sure there will be otherraces this year when we canshow what we can do.

At the wheel of the Porsche 911 GT3 RSR eldedby the Falken Tire squad, Porsche works driverWolf Henzler (Germany) and his teammateBryan Sellers (USA) and works driver Nick Tandy

(GB) nished the opening round of the AmericanLe Mans Series season on the GT podium in thirdplace. With this result, they were the best of thePorsche pilots on the bumpy 17-turn Sebringcircuit which hosts Americas oldest endurancerace.

The team qualied in 12th place in class, butHenzler timed his acceleration at the green

ag perfectly, scooting to sixth place in the 500meters between the start line and turn one. Then, with perfect pit stops and some great driving intrafc from all three racers, the customer Porscheentry outran and outlasted factory teams fromCorvette, BMW, SRT Viper and Aston Martin.

When the week began, I wouldnt have thoughtwe had a chance to make it on the podium

as we didnt have the speed of the others. Our Porsche was consistent, with the engine, brakes and handling all perfect, and we madeup positions one at a time until we moved into

the top three. We are very satised with thirdplace. We tested several times here, and thatcertainly helped, but we have more work to dofor the season. One of the secrets to our successtoday was the fast and consistent driving of mycolleagues Bryan and Nick, said Henzler, the2008 ALMS co-champion.

The other Porsche customer team in the GT class

was the Paul Miller Racing orsche 911 GT3 RSR,with factory drivers Richard Lietz (AUS) andMarco Holzer (GER) joining Bryce Miller (USA),nished in sixth place. Holzer, who will drive thiscar all season with Miller, was pleased with theperformance of his Porsche for the last half ofthe race

For five decades, the 911 has been the heart of thePorsche brand. Few other automobiles in the worldcan look back on such a long tradition and suchcontinuity as the Porsche 911. It has been inspiring

car enthusiasts the world over since its debut asthe model 901 at the IAA International AutomotiveShow in September 1963. Today it is consideredthe quintessential sports car, the benchmark for allothers. The 911 is also the central point of referencefor all other Porsche series. From the Cayenne tothe Panamera, every Porsche is the most sportingautomobile in its category, and each one carries apiece of the 911 philosophy.

Over 820,000 Porsche 911s have been built, making it the most successful sports car in theworld. For each of its seven generations theengineers in Zuffenhausen and Weissach havereinvented it, time and time again demonstratingto the world the innovative power of the Porschebrand. Like no other vehicle, the 911 reconcilesapparent contradictions such as sportiness andeveryday practicality, t radition and innovation, exclusivity and social acceptance, design andfunctionality. It is no wonder that each generationhas written its own personal success story. FerryPorsche best described its unique qualities: The

911 is the only car you could drive on an Africansafari or at Le Mans, to the theatre or through NewYork City traffic.

In addition to its classic yet unique lines, thePorsche 911 has always been distinguished byits advanced technology. Many of the ideas andtechnologies that made their debut in the Porsche911 were conceived on the race track. The 911 wascommitted to the performance principle from thestart, and motor racing is its most important test

lab. From the very beginning it has been at homeon circuits all over the world, earning a reputationas a versatile and dependable winner. Indeed, agood two thirds of Porsches 30,000 race victories

to date were notched up by the 911.

Defending Brickyard Grand Prix GT race winners, Magnus Racing

Indianapolis. Porsche customer teamscaptured three of the top 10 positionsin todays Brickyard Grand Prix at the

Indianapolis Motor Speedway (IMS). Thethree-hour GRAND-AM Rolex Sports CarSeries endurance race held on the roadcourse of the world famous racing facilityprovided a showcase for multiple teamscampaigning the Porsche 911 GT3 Cup car.In the races second running, it was GTpoints-leading Magnus Racing who tookthe greatest advantage of the track whichcombines both parts of The Brickyardsfamous oval and infield road course to finishthird. Two other Porsche customer teams,Snow Racing with Wright Motorsports andPark Place Motorsports, also took top 10finishes.

Although Magnus Racings No. 44 Porschewas not able to repeat its race-winningperformance of 2012, the team of Andy Lally(Atlanta) and John Potter (Salt Lake City,

hours of racing on the 2.534-mile, 13-turn circuit. By virtue of the run, the teamincreased the Rolex GT class championshiplead that they have held for much of theseason. Magnus has a four point lead overthe No. 57 Stevenson Motorsports ChevroletCamaro, 229 points to 225.

As always, if we cant win the race wecan at least be satisfied with top Porsche, said Potter from his second-consecutiveIndianapolis podium. The team did anexcellent job, and Andy fought all day. result. We played a great strategy, and itworked as well as we could have hoped. Theteam was perfect as always, and Im reallyhappy to still hold the point lead.

Snow Racing with Wright Motorsports hadtheir most impressive performance to date

leading 14 laps late in the race with driversAndrew Davis (Athens, Ga.) and MadisonSnow (Lehi, Utah). What the team believeswas a broken transmission mount in theclosing stages of the race would drop themfrom the lead to seventh. Despite this, itremains the teams strongest Rolex Seriesperformance to date in a limited schedule.

Really proud of the effort put forth bySnow Racing with Wright Motorsports,

said Davis. For a 17 year-old, Madisonhad a stellar drive out there today. He heldhis own against some of the best sports cardrivers in the world, got all the way up tosecond and put pressure on [Andy] Lally inthe championship leading Porsche. We ran adifferent strategy so we knew wed be ableto stay out when everyone else pitted. Wegot into the lead with everyone pitting andthen I just tried to build a gap. Unfortunately, about 30-minutes from the end we had atransmission issue. We would have had to pi tfor fuel anyway but wed have been able toget back out and fight for a podium finish.

Also making their best showing of the yeardespite another limited schedule was theNo. 71 Park Place Motorsports Porsche ofJason Hart (Flower Mound, Texas) and JohnMcCutchen (Dallas). After falling back early, the pair overcame to take 10th in class.

The Park Place sister car, the No. 73 sharedby Patrick Lindsey (Santa Barbara, Cali f.) andPorsche factory driver Patrick Long (Playa delRey, Calif.) ran in the top five for much of theday leading a total of four laps. They wouldfinish 11th after a broken shift linkage endedtheir day with only minutes to go.

I cant be prouder of the Park Place guys

EIGHTH AND NINTH FOR HAYDEN, DOVIZIOSO AT LAGUNA SECA

    21 July 2013

Ducati Team riders Nicky Hayden andAndrea Dovizioso spent almost the entireUnited States Grand Prix in a battle withone another, ultimately finishing the race ineighth and ninth places, respectively.

Starting from the third and fourth rows of the

grid, the two teammates sat in eighth andninth places at the completion of lap one.Hayden followed the Italian until the halfwaypoint, when he began to close in. A passwas made as they started lap 24 of 32, butthe two touched on the f ront straightaway, causing the American to run wide in turntwo. Hayden was able to reel Dovizioso inagain and pass him through the Corkscrewwith just two and a half laps remaining, and

the duo retained their positions to the finish.

As a sign of respect for Andrea Antonelli, the young Italian rider who tragically lost hislife today in the World Supersport race atMoscow Raceway, Haydens and DoviziososDucati Desmosedici GP13 machines wore ablack stripe on their front fairings.

With the 2013 MotoGP season havingreached its midway point, it now enters athree-week summer break, although thisThursday will find Dovizioso taking part in atest at Misano.Nicky Hayden - Ducati Team, 8th

happy with my start, and then I lost the rearbrakes after about the fourth lap, maybebecause they were overheating. I had nobrakes for about two laps, but then I wasable to pump them back up and close backon Dovi. I raced with him until I passed himon the front straightaway. When we touched,

I never saw him; I just felt something hookmy handlebar. It was an extremely closemoment, and when I went into turn two, myfolding clutch lever had pivoted up and myhandlebar was tweaked. I couldnt use thelever to back-shift and went through the turnin fourth gear, and then it took me a little bitto get used to the new position. Thankfully,I was able to pull him back and pass him. Were not going to celebrate eighth place, but our competitors are stronger than us at

the moment, especially on a bumpy track likethis. Hopefully we can do something betterafter the summer break. Id also like to addthat it was sad to wake up to the news ofAndrea Antonelli. Even though I didnt knowhim, the loss of a fellow rider is a terribletragedy.

ANDREA DOVIZIOSO - DUCATI TEAM, 9THAs we expected, it was a tough race, asit was difficult to control the bike and to beprecise. We had hoped to do the whole raceunder a 1:23 pace, but it wasnt possible.Unfortunately, I lost my posi tion to Nickynear the end, but I did my best. I tried toset the rhythm ahead of Nicky to wear himdown, but in the end it was him who woreme down! The contact on the front straightabsolutely wasnt intentional. Our biketends to wheelie on the straightaway, andas a result, its not easy to control, which is

why we came together. It was a somewhatdangerous situation, but these things canhappen, though obviously unintentionally.Unfortunately, this morning we all got thetragic news of Andrea Antonellis incidentin the Moscow Supersport race, and Imthinking of his family and team. I didntknow him well, but were the same age andwe did some motocross races together forcharity. Its truly tragic, and Im very sorry.

PAOLO CIABATTI DUCATI MOTOGPPROJECT DIRECTORUnfortunately, the day started with thetragic news of Andrea Antonellis incidentin the Supersport race in Moscow, and thatbrought a veil of sadness over the entirepaddock. I knew Andrea, and in the name of

the entire Ducati Team, I would like to extendour most heartfelt condolences to his family, his team, and all his relatives and friends. The race wasnt particularly satisfying forus. Nicky and Andrea had a lonely race foreighth and ninth places and were involvedin a nice battle with one another thatincluded some very close contact, but weobviously cant be satisfied with the result.Unfortunately, were still far from the leaders, and we must continue to work hard to try and

    reduce our gap.

The National Championship Air Races is the last pylon racing event in the world. With sevenclasses of aircraft racing around the unique course, anywhere from 50 to 500 feet above theground flying wing-tip to wing-tip at speeds exceeding 500 miles per hour, it is truly an eventnot to be missed.

Biplane ClassThe Biplane Class, represented by small, aerobatic aircraft like the Pitts Special, the Mongand the Smith Miniplane, gives pilots a chance to apply their skills to racing on a 3.18-milecourse at speeds exceeding 200 mph.

Formula One ClassFormula One aircraft are all powered by a Continental O-200 engine (the same 100 hpengine used in a Cessna 150). The fastest Formula One aircraft reach almost 250 mph on the3.12-mile race course in Reno. Many Formula One aircraft are built by the pilots that racethem and are a relatively inexpensive way to enjoy the excitement and satisfaction of airracing.

Sport ClassThe Sport Class highlights the new and innovative work being done in the development ofhigh-performance kit-built aircraft. Competition in the Sport Class is fierce, with the rapidintroduction of race-driven engine and airframe technology. Sport Class aircraft race on a6.37-mile course at speeds reaching nearly 350 mph.

T-6 ClassThe T-6 Class features match racing between stock aircraft, including the original T-6

"Texan," the Canadian-built "Harvard," and the US Navy "SNJ" version aircraft. The fastestT-6 aircraft generally post race speeds into the 220-230 mph range on the 5.06-mile courseat Reno. Because the aircraft are all of the same type, the T-6 Class provides some of themost exciting racing at Reno, with an emphasis on strategy and pilot skill rather than rawhorsepower.

Jet ClassThe Jet Class was inaugurated in 2002 as an invitation-only class, featuring match racingwith Czech-buil t Aerovodochody L-39 "Albatros" jets. Today the class has opened the fieldby adding other aircraft such as Provost, Iskra, L-29 and DeHavil land Vampires. This classtruly stands for the "Fastest Motor Sport" with speeds exceeding 500 miles per our.

Unlimited ClassWith the exception of very few "scratch-built" aircraft, the Unlimited Class has generally beenpopulated by stock or modified WWII fighters with the P-51 Mustangs, F-8F Bearcats andHawker Sea Fury being flown most often. The Unlimited Class flies in speeds exceeding 500mph.

A REVIEW by Ed BergmanVeloRUSH CEO

It is a sad, and at the same

time, a very interesting dayfor me as I have just finishedreading The Last Open Road.My thinking, upon initialpurchase, was that it wouldprovide a nice, (hopefullytransporting), diversion frommy very enjoyable, yet veryintense, daily work world asVeloRUSH CEO.

    Surprise !! I became so

engrossed that somehow threedays managed to pass andthen it was over - withoutother work being done. So Ihad to perform some magicalcatch up.

I'm 66 now and a Jersey guy(West Caldwell). So, whenI read Ar t Eastman's [Editor,Vintage Motorsport Magazine]very enthusiastic review, Idecided to take the plunge. Iwasn't at the Glen when Buddy[the authors main character]was, but my first race ever as aspectator was the '64 GP there.I had driven all night to Elmira.I had to see, first hand, whatso many of my buds had beenraving about and what I hadabsorbed through my monthlylooking glass as presented by

    Road & Track etc.

    With little sleep, early on

Fridays practice session, Ifound myself standing at thechain link fence separatingthe lookers from the doers, watching the distant activity. Iwasnt there long before a niceolder man came up to me fromthe other side and asked if Iwas having a good time. Heseemed much older to me at thetime he probably was in his20s. Absolutely, I exclaimed. He then asked a seeminglyinconsequential question thatwould eventually prove tohave changed the course of mylife: would you like a closerlook? Calmly, he walked meover to the guard, showed hisPass, and I, just like that, wasushered into the inner sanctum.I could hardly breathe. In notime, I found myself inside the

big barn where all of the cars, drivers and mechanics were.As if I had been expectedthere, I found myself sitting ona bench listening to a gaggleof my heroes talking about therace, the track, the weather, the tires and the women. Oh,the women of F1 !! Nothinghas been clearer since. I wasexactly right where I belonged.

    The Last

    Open Roadby Burt Levy

My heart was in my throatand my breath was short. Ispent that weekend in a fog ofenthusiasm. Those three dayswould remain, to this day, thetime that forever changed mylife perspective.

I felt convinced I hadnothing to contribute, so,uncharacteristically, I somehowmanaged to keep my mouthshut, watch and periodicallyhelp as I was asked.

Of the men I met that day, thegentleman that significantlychanged my life was none otherthan Martin Swig, (of CaliforniaMille Miglia and much

motorsporting mania fame).Over those invaluable 3 days, Ihad the amazing good fortuneto both meet, and spend timewith, Martin, Jack Brabham, JoBonier, Jackie Stewart, RonniePeterson, Graham Hill, Jo Siffert,Rolf Stommelen, Colin Chapmanand the individual that wouldcome to inspire me the mostover the years, Sir Stirling Moss.None of this, however, wouldhave happened if it werent forMartin.

What a time it was. My readingof The Last Open Road took meback there more vividly thanmy own memory could provide.Incredible. What a JOY. What aride!!

    Last year my heart sank

dramatically at the news ofMartins passing.

I do what I do with VeloRUSH inan effort to repay the generosityof the so many that haveilluminated the path I havechosen to follow. I can onlyhope to eventually contribute afraction of the gift I have beengiven.

In 2012, after six years of market research, prototype creating and testing, Snolo Sledshave released their first high performancealpine sled, the Stealth-X. Unlike manyof it s contemporaries, the carbon fibreflag ship model can be used on both hardcompact snow and soft powdered snow, and is a far cry fromthe wooden sleds of

old that were designedto run down a gentleslope laden with smallchildren. This sledis certainly no smallchilds toy. It s buil tfor serious adult fun.In designing this sledSnolo has taken the

old fashioned factor away from a childsplay thing, and made sledding into aserious adult past time that wants to rubalong side our traditional sports of skiingand snowboarding.

The Stealth-X has a seating position thatmakes you feel like

    you are si tting in

a race car, it hassteering abil ity, and ithas speed. Early testruns on an averagegradient slope showedit was capable of inexcess of 65 km/hr(approximately 40miles an hour), but

uniquely for a sled it can also maneuver and stop in much thesame manner as a snowboard using your feet and your bodypositioning. The Stealth-X is predominantly built of carbonfibre and comprises three main parts. The mono shell, thefront ski and the front arm.

MONO SHELL:The mono shell is made of carbon fibre. It is contour moldedto comfortably fit your lower body and has a foam paddedseat in the base with a flip up padded back rest. The laidback seating position allows both stability and comfort insteering and leaning. When not in use the back rest foldsdown, and shoulder straps which are attached to the rearof the sled move from their job as a lap belt to that ofa backpack harness. To enhance your safety, a lanyard

attaches from the sled to the rider whenever the sled is in use.

FRONT SKI AND ARM:The single front ski is made of carbon fibre. The foot pegsare attached to the top of the ski with a runner which can beadjusted forwards and backwards to suit the height of therider. A great feature of the Stealth-X is the ability for thefront ski to be removed and slotted in to the mono shell, sothe entire sled can be worn as a backpack, making it idealfor back country exploring.

As well as i ts performance on the snow, the Stealth-X isaesthetically pleasing and its sleek carbon fibre shell andfold down capability makes this sled stand out. In October2012, the Stealth-X took out the silver medal for the Concept/Experimental sect ion in the Best Awards, New Zealandsversion of the Oscars for New Zealand industrial design. Theaward gives further reinforcement to the fact that Snolo knowthis sled is truly one of a kind.Feel the ride in a Snolo Sled.

8BIG REASONS TO LOVE E-BIKES1. 40% of all car trips in the US are made within 2 miles of home2. 60% of the pollution created by cars happens in the first few minutes of operation, before

pollution control devices work effectively3. The US could save 462 million gallons of gas a year by boosting bicycle trips just half a

percentage point: from 1% to 1.5% of all trips

    4. Electric bikes are not meant to replace traditional bikes. They will replace short car tripsand get more people moving.

    5. For a 100 mile trip the operating cost for an electric bike will be around 27 cents.6. For a 100 mile trip by car at 20 MPG it will cost $15 just for the gas. Thats 55 times as

much!7. A car getting 20 MPG adds 22 pounds of Carbon Dioxide into the atmosphere! Thats

over 1 pound per milemore than 13,000 pounds a year for every 12,000 miles.8. Electric bikes bring a total change of perspective. They can be seen in one of two general

    ways: mild exercise and/or transportation.

ORONO, USA - When e-bikes first really

emerged in the US market in the 1990s,there were a handful of generic models

    available for sale. Merida, Currie,

Yamaha, and Honda were all players, but

no one model stood out from the others

    in terms of appearance, performance,

and capability. People came into retail

locations to buy an e-bike, not a Yamaha.

Things have changed since those early

says, but theres still a long way to go.

Now there are over 40 companies situatedand selling (or getting ready to) e-bikes inthe US: Advanced Sports Breezer, AerobicCruiser, BionX-Magna, Busettii, Cannondale,Conscious Commuter, Currie (Accell Groupowns), Ecobike, EB Bike, EG Bikes, ElectrapedLLC, Electric Wheels, eMoto, E-Road, e-TourEbikes, EZ Pedeler, eZee, Focus BicyclesUSA, Green Choice Moto, Hanebrink, HebbEbikes, HeroEco (Ultra Motor), Hummingbird,

SPECIALIZING THEIR PRODUCTSThe competition is growing and with it,differentiation. Appearance, performanceand capability matter now. US consumers arebecoming more discerning regarding e-bikesand manufacturers are stepping up to set themapart. Targeting commuters, baby boomers, extreme riders, green enthusiasts, and more,e-bike companies have started specializingtheir products to appeal to specific groups,

    and people are noticing.

In an age where you can easily change thecolor of your cell phone, laptop, tablet, etc.the US electric bike market has woken upto the fact that consumers are demandingcustomization and personalization. Insteadof shopping for an electric bike, todaysconsumers are shopping for color, style, graphics, and fun accessories in order toproject their own uniqueness out into a worldthat has become very busy.

Gone are the days of all e-bike manufacturersusing generic bicycle frames, you know theone: not quite a mountain bike, not quite acruiser, not quite a road bike. E-bikes arefinally showing some personality, like thepeople who own them.

    E-BIKE PURCHASERS

Pedego is one of the larger e-bike brands in theUS, Pedego has made a name for themselveswith the unique style, color, and look oftheir product. And even though they have aniche product with their beach cruiser style, theyve managed to snag a large portion ofthe market. Why? They appeal to the largestgroup of e-bike purchasers baby boomers. These are middle-aged folks with expendableincome. And people with expendable income

want a product that makes a statement aboutwho they are and what theyve accomplished. And with a price tag for their cruiser that startsat US$1,895 and goes up to US$2,395, youcan bet they are showing these bikes off.

Pedego isnt the only one eitherBionX,

Stromer, Optibike, Kalkhoff, EZ Pedaler, andeMoto are all successfully selling electric bikesthat appeal to this age demographic for thevery same reason. Each of these companieshas created a unique brand that appeals todiscerning, more affluent customers.

BionX has brought back the high-end retro feelof the 1930s with its Styriette model which sellsfor around US$4,500. The original Styriettewas a gas-powered bicycle way ahead of its

time, created by an Austrian company.

Stromer (who was acquired late last yearby BMC and is now called InternationalSport Holding (ISH)) channels its Swissroots marketing a top end, powerful bikethat appeals to many Americans. The cleanpowerful look of both their standard andstep-thru models are backed up by greatperformance. They retail for US$2,850 andup.

Optibike has most obviously cornered theluxury market as the self-proclaimed Ferrariof electric bikes. And with a retail priceanywhere from US$5,995 to US$9,995, youcan bet their reputation lives up to their claim.

Kalkhoff brings its clean German styling to themix, providing a sense of reliability and value.Kalkhoff has long been known for its high-

quality products and their numerous modelsof e-bikes do not disappoint retailing fromUS$2,000 USD - US$5,299 USD.

EZ Pedaler bikes have that comfortable, stablefeel about them, which appeals to an olderdemographic. They offer a reasonably pricedstandard and step-thru cruiser which retail forUS$1,895 and a foldable version that goes forUS$1,795.

And finally eMoto, provides a variety ofEuropean inspired looks to suit anyonesneeds. And with prices from US$899 toUS$1,799, these electric bikes can appeal toany demographic.

Although the baby boomer group appears

to currently have the most buying powerwhen it comes to e-bikes, there are severalother niche categories that are beginning toemerge. Why? Because these market groupshave the potential to grow exponentially overthe next 10 years. Some are already vastlysuccessful elsewhere in the world and someare still surfacing, but all have the promise tobe extremely successful.

Prodeco Technologies is a newer company to

this industry and one of the first to producehigh-quality products at extremely reasonableprices. There really arent many competitorsfor Prodeco at their MSRP price point of $999- US$1,099. And they still manage to pull adecent margin for their dealers, which is agood spot for them to be in at this time.

The Hanebrink Electric All-Terrain bike isgeared toward off-road, rugged riding. Thisproduct could be considered a replacementfor an ATV or UTV, which is a huge potentialmarket. (And weve already seen Polaris enterthe market, so they must see the potential.

The Aerobic Cruiser Hybrid Cycle targetspeople who want to live healthy lives byfocusing on endurance and exercise in riding. This electric bike touts the ability for a userto customize their workout by controlling thehuman/electric power ratio.

Conscious Commuter intends to produce anelectric bike solely focused on the needs ofthe urban commuter. As gas prices continueto rise, the commuter market for e-bikes willonly grow.

And, then there are the Thrust Eco-Deliveryelectric bikes which are engineeredspecifically for food delivery fleets. Any

company that offers delivery services is aprospect for electric bikes. This is not only agrowing market in the US, but worldwide andhas huge potential for the entire LEV industry.

Niche markets within the electric bike segmenthave developed and grown over the years due

to consumer demand as well as companiesrealizing they have to differentiate themselvesto get noticed in a sea of Asian imports.

BAD REPUTATIONThat being said, its not all about looks orfinding a niche in this business. Performancewill always be a key factor for US consumerswhen considering the purchase of an ebike.Unfortunately, e-bikes in the USA have had anotoriously bad reputation for poor function.

Good ones are available now, but they aremixed in with products that are still underperforming and unreliable.

The problem has been that the US consumers(and bike brand buyers) demand for a low,low price continues to pull junk into the e-bikemarket. And theres not much to be doneabout that. There will always be a market fora cheap, poorly made products (as it is withvirtually every other product on the market). The good news is however, there are plentyof well-made, good-performing e-bikes tochoose from and plenty of ways for consumersto find them.

The peer review has grown into a hugephenomenon in the US. Product reviews areaccessible to anyone for anything now. Noone purchases a product without researchingwhat everyone else thinks of it first. The same

is true for e-bikes. There are several placesa discerning consumer can read reviews fordifferent e-bike brands sold in the US andcan very easily determine the good qualityproducts from the sub-par ones.

Peer reviews, though helpful arent the onlyway to compare electric bike brands. Thereare also a handful of non-biased e-bikeenthusiasts out there who provide information

    to consumers through their websites.

Pete Prebus of http://www.electricbikereport.com has a website dedicated to spreadingthe concept of the electric bike as well ashelpful service and maintenance tips, industrynews and product reviews. Pete uses videos,

podcasts, and the written word to share hisfindings. And since users can comment righton his website, visitors are not only getting hisfeedback, but that of other owners of e-bikesas well.

Rob Means of www.electric-bikes.com isanother enthusiast (and seller) of electricbikes who has dedicated himself to providingdetailed information on products in the LightElectric Vehicle (LEV) industry. His website

contains information on every electric bikesold in the US (past or present) and can beextremely helpful when comparing products.

RULES & REGULATIONSThe laws governing the power and speed ofe-bikes in the US (HR 727) have not waveredsince being adopted in 2002. Motor powerin the USA can be as high as 750 Watts andmost brands have found that this is more thanis needed. So e-bike motors range from 250Watts to 750, with the bulk being 500 Wattsor less. And the majority of e-bikes have atop speed of 20 mph (32 kmh), since the lawprohibits anything faster.

Some ebike functionality has definitely seenimprovements over the years. For instance, the computer display has evolved into a smartdisplay. They can calculate not only speedand distance, but heart rate, calories burned,

and carbon emissions saved, etc. With some, you can download your trip information toyour computer and have a record of all ofyour rides.

Several brands in the US are also now offeringtwo different methods of power: pedal assistas well as throttle on demand power. Theseoptions give consumers more flexibility in theway they ride as well as the possibility to

increase their range. There are usually twotypes of riders of e-bikes those who pedaland those who do not. This feature satisfiesboth needs.

US distribution of e-bikes has stayed fairlyconstant over the years, with the majority ofproduct being sold through IBDs and online. There is also a good amount sold through LEVspecialty retailers and big box stores.

But be prepared for other channels to open upin the next few years, as e-bikes find space inATV/UTV stores, auto dealerships and othertransportation outlets.

All in all, e-bikes have come a long way sincetheir introduction into the US marketplace. Butthey still have a long way to go.
