Israel ist ein Staat in Vorderasien, der an den Libanon,

Syrien, Jordanien, das Westjordanland, Ägypten und

den Gazastreifen grenzt. Im Westen grenzt Israel an das

Mittelmeer. Er ist der einzige Staat der Welt, in dem

Juden eine Bevölkerungsmehrheit bilden. Völkerrechtlich

legitimiert durch eine Resolution der

Generalversammlung der Vereinten Nationen von 1947

wurde Israel nach Ende des britischen Mandats über

Palästina am 14. Mai 1948 als parlamentarische

Republik proklamiert. Dieser Plan der UN, Palästina in

einen israelischen und einen arabisch-palästinensischen

Staat aufzuteilen, war ein entscheidendes Ereignis des

vielschichtigen Nahostkonflikts, der in Teilen bis heute

andauert.

Isrāʼīl, IPA: [dawlat ʔisraˈ ʔ̍iˈl]), is a

country in Western Asia, on the south-

eastern shore of the Mediterranean

Sea. It shares land borders with

Lebanon in the north, Syria in the

northeast, Jordan on the east, the

Palestinian territories (or State of

Palestine) comprising the West Bank

and Gaza Strip on the east and

southwest respectively, Egypt and the

Gulf of Aqaba in the Red Sea to the

south, and it contains geographically

diverse features within its relatively

small area. In its Basic Laws Israel

defines itself as a Jewish and

Democratic State; it is the world's only

Jewish-majority state.
