The 79 articIes in this yearbook constitute an exemplary coverage of recent advances in the treatment of maxillofacial injuries and reflect a multiplicity of valuable ex- periences gained from the treatment of thousands of fractures. Special emphasis has been laid on the active surgical approach and the biome- ehanics of osteosynthesis procedures in the treatment of mandibular fractures. Reports of results from compression plate and wire osteosynthesis as well as Kirschner thread and external pin fixation seem to indicate that different methods in the hands of different surgeons all lead to acceptable results. The fractures of the maxillary, zygo- marie and orbital complexes as well as the fronto-basal injuries with associated complications and soft tissue lesions are comprehensively dealt with and supple- mented by the expertise of ENT-surgeons, neurosurgeons and ophthalmologists. This book meets the high standard of German rnaxillofacial traumatology. Lay-out, print- ing and illustrations are of the highest quality. It is greatly to be regretted that only German-reading oral and maxillofacial surgeons will be able to profit from this work. Volume XX of the "Fortsehritte der Kiefer- und Gesichtschirurgie" is devoted to the topic of transplantations in the oral and maxillofacial regions. Transplantation is the common denominator of the 47 articles giving principles and examples of plastic reconstruction of the facial skeleton and soft tissue after injuries or resections, burns, alveolar atrophy, etc., by grafting allo- or autogeneous tissue and alloplastic material. The balanced composition of the articles on fundamentals of transplantation immu- nology, animal experiments, clinicaI reports and follow-up studies maintains the high professional standards of previous editions. A few of the reconstructive procedures presented are beyond the scope of oral surgery in general but are all the more interesting for the oral surgeon who wants to broaden his horizon. The book is strong- ly recommended. SgSRENHILLERUP, Copenhagen, Denmark

It is greatly to be regretted that only German-reading oral and maxillofacial

surgeons will be able to profit from this work.
