Zur EinfiihrungDer Begriff Neue Sowjetische Klaviermusik verbindet sich beivielen Kennern dieser Musik mit musikalischen Vorstellungen,die etwa mit Schostakowitschs 24 Prdludien und Fugen enden.Es ist Sinn der hier vorgelegten Sammlung, diese Klischee-Vorstellungen zu modifizieren und die musikalische Schreib-weise sowjetischer Komponisten etwa vom Ersten Weltkriegbis zur Gegenwart mit pragnanten Beispielen zu belegen. Be-sonderer Wert wurde dabei auf jene Werke gelegt, die bisherim Westen - aber auch im Osten - ungedruckt und weitge-hend unbekannt geblieben sind: Die Klaviermusik der sowjeti-schen Avantgarde. Auf der anderen Seite wird auch eine An-zahl von Kinderstiicken wiedergegeben, weil auf diese species imBereich der padagogischen Musik in der Sowjet-Union beson-derer Wert gelegt wird. Schostakowitschs Aphorismen opus 13

sind im Westen so gut wie unbekannt. Sie riicken das Kla-vier-Opus dieses Komponisten in ein neues Bild. - Auf einenBeitrag von Sergej Prokofiew muiite aus urheberrechtlichenGriinden verzichtet werden.Die Sammlung ist nach Schwierigkeitsgraden progressiv geord-net. Wahrend Heft 1 iiberwiegend leichteren Spielstiicken vor-behalten bleibt, ist Heft 2 der konzertanten Musik verpflichtet.Es wird angestrebt, ein drittes Heft mit weiteren Beispielenzu veroffentlichen.Bei einigen Stiicken von Heft 1 hat der Herausgeber Finger-satze hinzugefiigt. Dies schien bei Stiicken mit hoherem Schwie-rigkeitsgrad nicht mehr sinnvoll zu sein.Fiir wertvolle Ratschlage bin ich Herrn Fred K. Prieberg zuDank verpflichtet.

IntroductionThe term Contemporary Soviet piano music is associated, evenby many of those who should know better, with pieces thatare as advanced stylistically as the Twenty-four Preludes andFugues by Shostakovich and no further.The aim of this collection is to put an end to this prejudiceby the presentation of characteristic examples of the piano styleof Soviet composers from about World War I to the present.Special emphasis has been placed on a particular class of workswhich has remained unpublished not only in the western buteven in the eastern world: the piano music of the advancedSoviet contemporary composers. A completely different typeof work is children's pieces, well represented here because educa-tional music is considered most important in the Soviet Union.Aphorisms, op. 13, by Shostakovich is practically unknown in

the West; they should throw a completely new light on thiscomposer's piano output. Copyright restrictions unfortunatelyprevent reprinting any work by Sergei Prokofieff.The pieces are arranged in progressive order of difficulty:Book 1 is devoted chiefly to fairly easy pieces for the use ofstudents and amateurs, while Book 2 is reserved for piecessuitable for concert performance. We hope to present a thirdvolume in due course.The editor has fingered some of the pieces in Book 1, but inthe case of the more difficult pieces, he considered this super-fluous.I wish to acknowledge my indebtedness to Fred K. Priebergfor his invaluable service.

Biographical NotesReinhold Ghere (b. Kiev, 1875; d. Moscow, 1956) studied at Mos-cow Conservatory with A. Arensky, S. Tanejev and others. While onthe conservatory staff from 1920 until 1941, he taught some of theleading Soviet musicians, including Khachaturian. Major works: nu-merous operas and ballets; three symphonies; several symphonicpoems; cello, horn, harp and vocal concertos. Song from the East isone of a cycle of 12 "moderately difficult" children's pieces which h~wrote in 1907 in a romantic folk style reminiscent of his orchest ra lworks.Dimitri Kabalevski (b. St. Petersburg, 1904) studied with N. Mias-kovsk y arid G. Catoire at Moscow Conservatory, occupies a highposition in the Soviet broadcasting system, W.lS for a time editor ofthe journal "Sov ietska y a Muzyka". The Ball Game comes from theset From Pioneer Life, op. 14 (1931), which reflects the newlyawakened interest in educational literature for children.Aram Khachaturian (b. Tiflis, 1903) studied composition with M.Gnessin at the Gnessin Musical Technicum. In 1934, as a pupil ofN. Miaskovsky, he graduated from Moscow Conservatory, wherehe has been professor of composition since 1951. "Ljado is Ill" isthe third of ten pieces from Children's Album, written between1926 and 1947, mostly in 1946.Georgi Sviridov (b. Fatczh, Kursk Province, 1915) studied withShostakovich at Leningrad Conservatory. He is among the leadingSoviet composers of vocal music; his few piano works includeClnldren's Album (second, and final, version 1957) from which thisToccatina has been taken.Arvo Paert (b. 1935, Reval, Estonia) studied with V. Tormis at amusic school in Tallinn, completing his education in 1963 at theconservatory there under H. Eller, who introduced him to moderntechniques of composition. He is on the staff of Radio Tallinn.Toccatina and Fughet ta emulates the style of his Paitita, op. 2(1958).Anti Marguste (b. 1931), Estonian composer, studied compositionunder A. Garshnck at Tallinn Conservatory (1955-60). His worksinclude four symphonies, a cantata, a piano concerto and manysongs in Estonian folk music style. His piano sketch The Weaselwas written in 1959 before Margustc had begun to experiment withnew techniques.Vladimir Tsytovich (b. Leningrad, 1931) entered Leningrad Con-servatory in 1958 a.. a pupil of B. Arapov and I. Braude (composi-tion and piano). His major works include a sinfonictta, piano andv iol a concertos, and two concert suites. He teaches at LeningradConservatory. His Prelude No.4 in one of ten written in 1964.Nodar MamisashviIi is a little known Georgian who has only justbegun to attract attention with some chamber and organ workswhose melodic and harmonic indebtedness to Georgian folk melodyis not concealed by careful experimentation and original instrumen-tation. Yerevan, 1921) studied at musical institutesin Yerevan and Moscow, has been teaching piano at Yerevan Con-servatory since 1950. He often writes in the Armenian folk idiomalthough he seldom quotes literally. Of late, he has been experi-menting in a modified dodecaphony, as shown by Intermezzo, oneof Six Pictures for Piano written in 1966.Valentin Silvestrov (b. Kiev, 1937) studied architecture for threeyears, composition with B. Liatoshinsky at Kiev Conservatory from1958 to 1964, now teaches piano at the Ukrainian Choral SocietyMusic Studio. His orchestral, chamber and piano works arc writtenin a style influenced by Schoenberg's middle period. Silvestrov has.1150 adapted for his own use 12-tone, serial and r.uidom techniques.Serenade was written in May, 1962.Dimitri Shostakovich (b. St. Petersburg, 1906) studied piano atPerrog r.id-Lcningrad Conscrv.u ory, later composition with M. Stein-berg; now teaches at Leningrad and Moscow Conservatories. He is

the best known Soviet musician alive. Aphorisms, op. 13, was writtenin 1927, a period when Shostakovidi's style was quite advanced. In1966, it was reprinted, together with four new pieces, by Muzyka.However, since Nos. 5-7 (Marche [unebre, Etude, Dance of Death)are a long way from the advanced style of the others, we have notincluded them.Alfred Schnittke (b. 1934) studied at Moscow Conservatory, gaininghis diploma for an oratorio in 1958; lives in Moscow as a composer.uid writer on music; uses clements of dodccaphony, Variations on aChord was written in 1966.Edison Denisov (b. Tomsk, 1929) studied mathematics at TornskUniversity, then composition with Shcbalin at Moscow Conserva-tory, where he has been a professor himself since 1957. He wroteSUIl o f the Incas to texts by G. Mistral, concerrantc chamber musicand chansons. He has newly edited works of Stravinsky and the sixstring quartets by Bartok for the State Publishing House. In his ownmusic he attempts a synthesis of all present-day techniques. HisVariations (1961) are an example of the moderate use of dodeca-phony.Vita1y Godziatski (b. Kiev, 1936) studied with B. Liatoshinsky atKiev Conservatory (1956-61), since then has been lecturing at musicschools and more recently teaching piano at the Ukrainian ChoralSociety Music Studio. He has written only a few works to date, buttheir a d v.inccd technique has already brought him a reputation as aSoviet version of John Cage. Ruptures of Flatne sses was written in1963.Alemdar Karamanov (b. Simferopol, 1934) graduated from MoscowConservatory as a pupil of S. Bogatyrcv in 1958 and returned tohis native town. His works include three symphonies, two pianoconcertos, an oratorio about Lenin and a voc.il symphony on Script-ur.il texts.
