NIX RESULTS

Desde noviembre de 2013 en que publicamos el primer nmero de NIX hasta este tercer nmero que estis viendo, la cifra total de au-diencia acumulada es de 45.000 lectores. Repartindose 25.000 (en 18 meses) para la edicin de 2013/14 y 15.000 (en 11 meses), para la de 2014/15. De ests cifras estimamos la audiencia media por nmero y ao de 20.000. Por otro lado, nuestra web revistanix.com tiene 38.000 pginas vistas en sus 10 meses de existencia, y ha servido para seguir ofreciendo contenidos aadidos a los de la propia revista y mantener el contacto da a da con los lectores.

Ah estn estas cifras, que no son bajas al tratarse de lectores de una publicacin y no visitantes de un sitio web, aunque somos conscientes de nuestro carcter minoritario. 20.000 por nmero y ao son pocos usuarios pero muchos lectores y, sobre todo, son pblico muy intere-sado, pues un 45% de las lecturas de NIX lo hacen de forma completa, es decir, viendo desde la portada hasta la ltima pgina.

Seguimos trabajando para que la cifra aumente, pero sobre todo, segui-mos fieles a la idea de hacer una revista de esquiadores para esquia-dores que refleja el tipo de deporte que nos apetece y los contenidos que deseamos mostrar, dando una especial importancia al entorno (la montaa) que es el elemento primordial del tipo de esqu que nos gusta.

Queremos seguir siendo una revista artesanal y minoritaria en la que pri-men los contenidos de inters para aquellos lectores que se identifican y practican el esqu y snowboard de fuera de pista en cualquiera de sus modalidades. A los apasionados del esqu alpinismo, freeride y travesa va dirigida NIX. Esperamos seguir contando con su atencin e inters, as como con el apoyo de los anunciantes que han puesto su confianza en un producto dirigido a un universo de lectores relativamente peque-o pero enormemente apasionado. Esperamos en este tercer NIX cum-plir con las expectativas y, sobre todo, gustar e interesar a la pequea gran familia de esquiadores y snowboarders de fuera de pista.

From November, 2013, when we published our first NIX issue, to this third issue you are now reading, the total amount of readers comes to 45000. They have been 25000 (in 18 months) for the 2013/14 issue, and 15000 (in 11 months) for the 2014/15 issue. We therefore es-timate an average audience of 20000 per issue and year. Moreover, our website revistanix.com has reached 38000 sites visited in 10 months, and it has been a good way to keep offering additional services to those in the magazine, and to keep in touch on a more daily basis with the readers.

Those are the figures, not bad considering we are talking about readers, not visitors of a web site, although we are aware of our minority nature. 20000 per issue and year mean few users, but many readers. And above all, they are a very committed audience, as 45% of the NIX readings are complete, that means, from the cover down to the last page.

We keep on working so that those figures rise, but above all, we remain true to the idea of making a magazine from skiers to skiers, showing the kind of sport we like, and the contents we want to share, giving a special impor-tance to the surroundings (the mountain), which is the main element in the kind of skiing we love.

We want to go on being a hand-made and minority magazine, in which the contents that come first are the ones of interest to those readers who identify themselves and practice off-piste ski and snowboard in any way. NIX is intended for the passionate about mountaineering, ski-ing, freeride and cross-country skiing. We hope to keep their attention and interest, as well as the support of the advertisers who have placed their trust in a product intended for a universe of readers whic is rela-tively small, but also greatly passionate. We hope to meet the expecta-tions with this third issue of NIX, and mostly, be liked and be of interest to the small big family of off-piste skiers and snowboarders.

Los registros meteorolgicos a lo largo de 2015 en Espaa no dan lugar a dudas, el ao ha sido ms caluroso de lo normal en general (al escribir estas lneas an faltan dos meses para que acabe). Pero especial-mente caluroso ha sido el perodo entre abril y julio, siendo este ltimo mes el ms caluroso de toda la historia de los registros meteoro-lgicos. No slo en Espaa, tambin en gran parte de la Europa central y occidental, sirva de ejemplo que tanto en el Mont Blanc como en el Cervino, las rutas normales han sido gran parte del verano desaconsejadas e incluso cerradas por el riesgo de desprendimientos como consecuencia de las altas temperaturas.

Estas altas temperaturas no slo lo han sido en determinados das en los que se han batido records absolutos, sino, y casi ms destacable, que la ola de calor en Europa y las sucesivas olas (hasta cinco) de altas temperaturas en Es-paa entre mayo y julio, se han sucedido duran-te largos perodos de hasta 10 das. Por citar un ejemplo, la ciudad de Crdoba ha batido el re-cord de temperatura media mxima en un mes de julio, llegando a los 31,5 C frente al anterior que era de 29,6 C. Casi dos grados de ascenso en la media mxima en este mes. Preocupante.

The weather records of 2015 in Spain leave no room for doubt, this has been a warmer year than average (as we write these lines there are still two months before it ends). But the period from April to July has been specially warm, being July the warmest month ever, in the histo-ry of meteorological records.Not only in Spain, but also in most of middle and west Europe. As a example, both in the Mont Blanc as in the Cervi-no, the usual paths have been advised against or even closed due to the risk of landslides as a result of the high temperatures.

These high temperatures have not only occured in

precise days, when absolut records have been bro-

ken, but, and even more remarkably, that the heat

wave in Europe and the consecutive waves (up to

five) of high temperatures in Spain between May

and July have lasted up to ten days. Just to set an

example, the city of Cordoba has broken the record

of maximum average temperature in the month of

July, going up to 315C, when the previous one

was 296C. An increase of nearly 2 degrees in the

maximum average of this month. Alarming.

En septiembre de 2015, la montaa ms alta de Norteamrica ha vuelto a tomar su antiguo nombre, el monte McKinley (6.193 m.) es ahora Denali que en lengua ata-bascana significa el ms alto. La propuesta del cambio de nombre fue lanzada por el es-tado de Alaska en 1975 y ahora, a travs de su autoridad ejecutiva, la secretaria de Interior de Estados Unidos, Sally Jewell, ha decidido que el monte vuelva a llamarse Denali para refle-jar la herencia de los nativos.

El nombre de McKinley viene de 1896, cuando un buscador de oro decidi bautizar la monta-a con el nombre del vigsimo quinto presi-dente de Estados Unidos, William McKinley, y as se ha conocido oficialmente desde que el Congreso lo ratific en 1917. Durante la presi-dencia de McKinley, en 1898, Espaa perdi su colonia de Cuba frente a Estados Unidos. McKinley muri en diciembre de 1901 como consecuencia de las heridas tras ser tiroteado.

inleys presidency, Spain lost their colony Cuba to

the USA. McKinley died in December, 1901, due to

the injuries he siffered after being shot.

I t is never agreeable to talk about accidents, and even less so to talk about death. But it is al-ways interesting and curious to know the sta-tistics of suffering fatal accidents when practis-ing snow- and mountain-related sports in order to compare them to other sports and activities.

A partir de la prxima temporada, las es-taciones de The Canyons y Park City estarn conectadas por un telefrico que se est construyendo desde primavera de 2015. El forfait ser comn y no se es-pera incremento de precios en l respecto a 2014, es decir, el doble de terreno por el mismo precio. Con esta unin, el dominio pasar a ser el mayor de los Estados Unidos.En total, unas 3.000 hectreas, casi todas ellas de bosque y con altitudes que van des-de los 3100 m de Jpiter hasta los 2000 de la base. From the next season on, the resorts of The Canyons and Park City will be connected by a cable railway that is being built from the spring of 2015. THE LAST HIELERO

El ltimo Hielero es un documental precioso, humano y un tanto triste, pues es el testimonio de uno de los ltimos buscadores y acarreadores de nieve del Planeta. El director es Sandy Match y nos ensea la vida y profesin de Baltazar Ushca, que ha subido por las laderas del Chimbora-zo, la montaa ms alta en Ecuador, para co-sechar el hielo de los glaciares. Incluso sus hermanos, Gregorio y Juan, ambos criados como hieleros, ya se han retirado de la profe-sin para encontrar un trabajo ms estable. Los hieleros, llamados neveros en Espaa, desempearon una dura pero lucrativa profe-sin hasta finales del XIX y principios del XX, cuando la aparicin del hielo industrial los hizo prescindibles.

El ltimo hielero (the last ice-man) is a beautiful, humane and quite sad docu-mentary, as it is the last testimony of one of the last snow-hunter and -carriers in the plan-et. It has been directed by Sandy Match, and it shows us the life and occupation of Baltazar Ush-ca, who has gone up the slopes of Chimborazo, the highest mountain in Ecuador, to harvest the ice from the glaziers.Even his brothers, Gregorio and Juan, also raised as hieleros, have already retired from the job to find a more steady one. The hieleros, known as neveros (snow-men) in Spain, performed a hard but profitable job until the end of the 19th century and the beginning of the 20th, when the appearance of industrial ice made them dispensable.

Comienza un campeonato de esqu de base en la zona Centro con la intencin de fomentar y difundir la aficin por el deporte como parte imprescindible en la edu-cacin.

La Itra Ski Cup es una liga compuesta por 4 ca-rreras: Madrid Snow Zone (19/12/15), La Pinilla (30/1/16), Valdesqu (13/2/16. Albergando el Campeonato de Madrid U10 y U12), y Navace-rrada (12/3/16), para las categoras U8, U10 y U12. Buscando la difusin y la celebracin tras las pruebas, los paddock estarn en los pue-blos cercanos y habr: juegos, sorteos, zona de stands y premios con regalos y sorteos para todos.

Ha sido imprescindible la colaboracin de la Federacin madrilea de Deportes de Invierno y de los ayuntamientos de: Navacerrada, Riaza y Arroyomolinos, as como de las marcas patro-cinadoras: Grupo Itra (Mercedes-Benz), GAES, N-PY, Coolcasc, Hysteresis, Pocoy, Decathlon, Pilot, Body pack, y La Pinilla.

Starts a championship of base-ski in the cen-tral zone with the intention of promoting the ski competition between children in the form of game..

The Itra Ski Cup consists of a League composed of 4 races: Madrid Snow Zone (XX/12/15), La Pinilla (30/1/16), Valdesqu (13/2/16. Hosting the Champi-onship of Madrid U10 and U12), and Navacerrada (12/3/16) for categories U8, U10 and U12. Looking for broadcast and celebration, the paddock will be placed in the nearest villages with: games, sweep-stakes, sponsors stands and the award ceremonies with gifts for all.

It has been necessary the collaboration of the Ma-drid Federation of winter sports and the support of the municipalities of: Navacerrada, Riaza and Arroy-omolinos, as well as sponsoring brands: Group Itra (Mercedes-Benz), GAES, N-PY, Coolcasc, Hysteresis, Pocoyo, Decathlon, Pilot, Body pack, and La Pinilla.

Los temporales de nieve del mes de febrero de 2015 fue-ron histricos en algunos lugares del Pirineo. En Piau Engaly fue el Apocalypse Snow: nevadas que en po-cos das dejaron espesores de ms de 4 metros.

The snow storms of February, 2015 were historic in some points of the Pyrenees. In Piau Engaly it was the Apo-calypse Snow: snowfalls that rendered more than 4 metres of snow in a few days.

Durante el temporal hubo que acceder a la esta-cin por el Pas Vasco debido al cierre del tnel de Bielsa, que permaneci as du-

rante bastantes jornadas. Las mquinas ya haban retirado de

las carreteras la nieve depositada por los numerosos aludes que haban baja-

do hasta el fondo del valle, pero an as, daba miedo pararse a hacer fotos. Despacito y con unas buenas ruedas de nieve, conseguimos llegar a Piau. El peligro de aludes era de 5 en la escala europea, as que la primera maana hubo que limitarse a disfrutar de la nieve en las inmediaciones de la base de la estacin, pero preparamos todo nuestro material de seguridad por si acaso haba suerte y abran un remonte en alguna zona segura. Repen-tinamente el cielo comenz a despejarse y uno de los remontes ech a andar. Los pocos esquiadores que estbamos all, nos apelo-tamos en la barrera del remonte hasta que pudimos subir. Las formidables montaas que enmarcan esta estacin surgieron entre las nubes, cargadas de nieve dando la sensa-cin de estar en Japn o Alaska.

During the storm, the resort had to be reached through the Basque Country, due to the closing of the Bielsa tunnel, which lasted several days. The machines had already cleared the roads of the snow that had fallen in the numer-ous avalanches that had gone all the way down to the bottom of the valley, but it was still frightening to stop to take pictures. Really slow, and with a good set of snow tyres, we reached Piau. The avalanche risk was 5 in the european scale, so the first morn-ing we just got to enjoy the snow in the surround-ings of the base of the resort, but we had all our safety equipment ready, just in case we got lucky and they opened any ski-lift in some safe area. Sud-denly, the sky cleared up and one of the lifts started moving. The few skiers who were there gathered at the gate of the lift until we were able to go up. The great mountains that surround this resort appeared through the clouds, loaded with snow, making it seem we were in Japan or Alaska.

Little by little, the mantle became more stable due to the compression of the snow. However, you could see signs of inestability everywhere you looked. We started to trace turns on the

El manto se fue estabilizando poco a poco debido al apelmazamiento de la nieve. Aun as, miraras hacia donde miraras, encontrabas signos de inestabilidad. Comenzamos a trazar giros en la nieve polvo cerca de las pistas y poco a poco fuimos separndonos de ellas con mucha precaucin y el ABS listo para dispararlo si fuera necesario. El manto estaba asentando bien pero haba que seguir extre-mando las precauciones. Solamente estuvo abierto el telesilla de Campbielh, pero con l se accede a unos cuantos sectores muy in-teresantes. Nos sentimos unos privilegiados, y ms sabiendo que este da de sol y nieve polvo, casi todas las estaciones pirenaicas estaban cerradas, ocupadas en desenterrar las instalaciones. Poco a poco, los escasos ri-ders que estbamos, fuimos abriendo palas y dibujando lneas pero sin adentrarnos en las zonas ms expuestas a los aludes.

Durante casi todo el segundo da tuvimos nie-bla y nula visibilidad, pero no dejamos de dis-frutar en la protegida zona cercana al bosque del Hourc. Menos mal que metimos en el equi-paje nuestros esqus ms anchos, los SLAP XL de 122 mm de patn, y pudimos gestionar este paquetn en el que algunos rboles estaban prcticamente enterrados y aparecan de en-

The mantle was settling allright, but we still had to be extremely cautious. The Campbielh chair-lift wasthe only one open, but it gives access to some pretty interesting sectors of the resort. We felt really privileged, all the more knowing that that same sunny day, with powder snow, most of the Pyrenean resorts were closed, busy dig-ging up the facilities. Step by step, the few riders who were there managed to open some slopes and trace some lines, without going into the more avalanche-exposed areas.

For most of the second day we had fog and no visibility, but we didnt stop enjoying the pro-tected area close to the Hourc forest. Luckyly enough, we had packed our widest skis, the SLAP XL with a 122mm waist, and we could face this mess where some trees were al-most buried and appeared through the fog as ghosts. As the day got clearer, some slopes quickly changed and we moved to the areas of Campbielh where there was still good powder. With this snow, we were able to carry out some jumps we had previously set our minds to. This

time, as the avalanche risk was never lower than 4, we couldnt go to the other great fre-eride area of the resort, the Envers of PiuEngaly. This sector can be reached from the peak of the resort, by the chairlift of Pic du Piau, taking a small walk around it to its west face. This face is quite prone to avalanches, as it is made of channels separated by convex crests that tend to break. In case of an avalanche, it will take us to the lower cliffs or to the build-up zones in the end of the channels. That is why we have to be really sure that the mantle is stable enough. We were able to ski it a year ago, and we found it one of the wildest and most interesting areas in these surroundings. This slopes take us to the bottom of the valley, remote and deserted, and we can get to the piste of Valle du Badet by a beautiful route.

But everything good must come to an end, and it was time to go back. Our two last de-scents down the ridge that separates the Plaque Dominique from the couloirs of Camp-bielh, which we called Hokkaido due to its powder snow and the little trees showing here

tre la niebla como fantasmas. Cuando fue des-pejando, algunas laderas se transformaron rpidamente y nos trasladamos a los sectores de Campbielh en donde todava haba polvo-rn del bueno. Con esta nieve, se pudieron dar algunos saltos a los que hace tiempo ha-bamos echado el ojo. En esta ocasin, debido al alto peligro de aludes que no bajo de 4, no pudimos visitar la otra gran zona de freeride de la estacin, el Envers de PiauEngaly. Un sector al que se accede desde la cima de la estacin, que se alcanza con el telesilla del Pic du Piau, y una pequea caminata rodendolo por su cara oeste. Esta vertiente es bastante avalanchosa ya que est formada por canales separados por crestas convexas propensas a romper. En caso de alud, nos conducir a los cortados inferiores o nos arrastrar a las zonas de acumulacin al final de las canales. Por eso hay que estar bien seguros de que las condi-ciones del manto sean estables. Ya la pudimos esquiar hace un ao y nos pareci una de las zonas ms salvajes e interesantes de este en-torno. Estas pendientes nos conducen al fon-do del valle, aislado y solitario, y mediante una preciosa travesa podemos llegar hasta la pis-ta del Vallee du Badet.

Pero todo lo bueno se acaba y lleg la hora de volver. ltimas dos bajadas por la dorsal que separa la Plaque Dominique de los couloirs de Campbielh, y que nosotros llambamos Hokkaido por su nieve polvo y los arbolillos que asoman aqu y all. Todo un bao de nieve polvo en esta pequea-gran estacin: pequea por lo acogedora, sin edificaciones mastodnticas, con pocos remontes pero muy estratgicos; y grande por sus gentes y traba-jadores, el cuidado de sus pistas y la atencin a los esquiadores y, por supuesto, por sus inte-resantes y variados sectores freeride.

A Piau Engaly llegamos por el tnel de Bielsa, que se encuentra a tan solo 13 km, o por el Pas Vasco por Tarbes, Bagneres de Bigorre y Arreau. Su base se encuentra a una altitud de 1850 m. El remonte ms bajo llega a 1420 m cerca de Arag-nouet. La cima alcanza los 2528 m, cerca de la cumbre del Pic du Piau. Tiene 11 remontes y 41 pistas (4 verdes, 19 azules, 11 rojas y 7 negras) y un Snow Park con zona para nios, Boarder Cross, Air Zone y Big Air Bag. Otro atractivo es la zona de esqu nrdico en el Valle de Ordesa, a 25 km, o la posibilidad de ascender a unos cuan-tos tresmiles de los alrededores. We reach Piau Engaly by the Bielsa tunnel, that is just 13 kilometres away, or through the Basque Country via Tarbes, Bagneres de Bigorre and Arreau. Its base has an altitude of 1850 metres. The lowest lift goes up to 1420 metres, near Aragnouet. The peak reaches 2528 metres, close to the summit of Pic du Piau. It has 11 lifts and 41 pistes (4 green, 19 blue, 11 red and 7 black ones) and a Snow Park with childrens area, Boarder Cross, Air Zone and Big Air Bag. Another attraction is the nordic ski area in the Ordesa Valley, 25 kilometres away, or the possibility to ascend a few three thousands in the surroundings. They hold several events for all audiences throughout the season, among which the Derby of the Pyrenees, Freeride Weekend and Nikita can be specially highlighted.

Bosque del Hourc: Es una de las zonas que mejor proteccin ofrece los das de mal tiempo y escasa visibilidad gracias al bosque por el que se esqua. No siempre est abierto el telesilla de regreso.

Sarrous: Sector de palas amplias bajo el telesilla de Engaly que acaba en una garganta que reco-ge cualquier avalancha de la zona. No conviene esquiar por el fondo de ella en situaciones de peligro de aludes.

Badet: Se accede con el telesilla del Pic de Piau en el que encontramos palas con buena pen-diente y expuestas al viento y al mal tiempo.

Campbielh: Uno de los mejores sectores de free-ride por su facilidad de acceso y sus diferentes orientaciones en las que podremos encontrar las mejores nieves. Aqu encontramos diferentes zonas con muy diversas caractersticas: Couloi-res, Lagopede y Plaque Dominique.

Vallee de La Gela: Varios itinerarios exigentes en la ladera este del Pic du Piau y que conducen al fondo del valle de La Gela, por donde podremos llegar hasta la carretera que sube a la estacin.

Envers de Piau: Con una corta caminata desde la estacn superior del telesilla del Pic du Piau accedemos a toda una ladera con varias ca-nales y palas empinadas que nos conducen al fondo del valle de Badet. Haciendo una travesa descendente llegaremos a la pista de Badet y el telesilla de Mouscades. n

FREERIDE AREAS

Hourc forest: It is one of the areas with a higher pro-tection against bad weather and low visibility, due to the forest through which we ski. The chairlift back is not always open.

Sarrous: This is a sector with wide slopes below the chairlift of Engaly, that ends in a ravine that gather every avalanche in the area. It is not advisable to ski on its bottom in avalanche risk situations.

Badet: It is reached with the chairlift of Pic de Piau, and we find good gradient slopes exposed to wind and bad weather.

Campbielh: One of the best freeride areas due to its easy access and different orientations, so that we can find the one with the best snow. Here we find different areas with diverse features: Couloires, La-gopede and Plaque Dominique.

La Gela Valley: Some demanding itineraries on the East face of the Pic du Piau that go to the bottom of the La Gela Valley, where we can reach the road that goes up to the resort.

Envers de Piau: With a short walk from the higest station of the chairlift of Pic du Piau we reach a whole mountainside with many channels and steep slopes that take us to the bottom of the Badet Valley. With a descending route we reach the piste of Badet and the chairlift of Mouscades.. n

A media hora de SALT Lake City, capital del estado de Utah, est Park City, uno de los destinos mticos del esqu mundial, sinnimo de buena y abundante nieve adems de servicios e instalaciones al ms alto nivel. Tres macro estaciones y en su base, un pueblo del Oeste y un gran valle con toda la oferta ldica y de servicios imaginable.

Half an hour away from Salt Lake City, capital of the state of Utah, we find Park City, one of the mythical world ski des-tinations, synonymous with excelent and plentiful snow, as well as highest-level services and facilities. Three ma-cro-resorts, and at their feet, a typical western village, and a great valley with everything imaginable related with lei-sure activities and the services sector.

Park City was already a winter tourist destina-tion for many Americans since the 1960s, but with the Winter Olympic Games that took place in Salt Lake City in 2002, this small city located in a valley under the mountains where the three ski resirts can be found, became one of the world models among ski resorts. There are plenty of reasons for it to be coveted as a place in which to ski and enjoy. Around 5000 hectares of land, 500 pistes between the three resorts, 1100 metres of gradient, and some of the best snow in the whole planet Earth (Utah snow is almost synonymous with powder snow), are all solid ar-guments. Not to forget that, unlike other legend-ary places in Utah such as Alta or Snowbird, the aprs-ski in Park City is assorted and quite tempt-ing. Numerous and good restaurants and bars, all kinds of shops, a thoughtful architecture made of a mixture between far-west, art-dec and colonial styles, and a broad and really good supply of ho-tels and lodgings, are some other reasons to say without misleading, that Park City is among the five best ski destinations in the world.

FROM MINING TO SKI

Up until halfway through the 19th century, ex-cept for some Indians looking for game, hardly any man had been to or lived in this remote area of the Wasach mountain range. It was with the arrival of the Mormons to Salt Lake City (1847) that this area began to have a small but thriving population. Specially with the arrival of the mine prospectors, this valleys became known and began being explored in search for deposits of gold, uranium, and, mainly, silver. The abun-dance of this mineral is what made Park City, just in a century, turn from being a small camp, to a city of contrasts, where episodes of glory and decline followed one another, as it is usually the case in the western cities that were born as a re-sult of the gold and silver rush.

ities close to the pistes in Park City), and the snow became a tourist attraction and the main source of income. It was then when the words lift and pow-der turned out to be more than a small wagon and gunpowder (Treasure Mountain Home. Park City Revised, George A. Thomson, Fraser Buck. 2014).

This is how this small city that arose as a mining camp in 1868, turned into a ski resort and tourist destination almost a century later, after an agoniz-ing decade in 1950, from the mining crisis to the appearance of the ski resort.

Nowadays, the main core of Park City, and spe-cially Main Street, keep that atmosphere of a tra-ditional western village, with its wooden buildings exquisitely preserved. Here we can find everything we need (and even more!) to enjoy a good aprs-ski, whatever our preferences may be: all kinds of restaurants that will satisfy the most demanding palates, or the more affordable fast-food stablish-ment; hangouts with a more festive atmosphere and live music; Indian and cowboy craftwork shops; art galleries; jewellers with the tradition-al silver and gemstone carvings from this region; music concerts, theatre, or the independent cine-ma festival Sundance in January. A cosmopolitan city that nontheless keeps its personality intact. Besides, there are many shopping-malls in its sur-roundings, some of them huge, in which we can find everything related to snow and mountain, sometimes even with really interesting prices.

As fue como esta pequea ciudad que surgi como un campamento minero en 1868, pas a convertirse en un centro de esqu y destino turstico casi un siglo despus de su surgi-miento y tras una dcada de agona en 1950, desde la crisis de la minera hasta la aparicin de la estacin de esqu.

Hoy en da, el ncleo central de Park City, y en especial Main Street, conserva el ambien-te del tradicional pueblo del lejano oeste con sus construcciones de madera pulcra-mente conservadas. artesana india o vaquera; galeras de arte; joyeras con las tallas tradicionales en plata y piedras preciosas de la zona; conciertos de msica, teatro o el Festival de cine indepen-diente Sundance en enero. Una ciudad cos-mopolita pero que conserva perfectamente su carcter. Adems, en su entorno hay nu-merosos centros comerciales, algunos de grandes dimensiones donde se puede en-contrar todo lo referente a nieve y montaa, a veces con precios muy interesantes.

Mencin aparte merece el Parque Olmpico de UTAH a unos cinco kilmetros de Park City en direccin a SALT Lake City. Es un parque temtico sobre los Juegos Olmpicos y la his-toria de los deportes de invierno con museo, auditorio, pistas de esqu acrobtico, baeras, mdulos, circuito de fondo, parque de cuer-das y tirolinas (de lo ms bestia)... y la pista olmpica de bobsleigh, donde se pueden ver los vertiginosos descensos y donde tambin se puede probar esta impresionante y adre-naltica experiencia no apta para cardiacos.

The Olympic Park in Utah, some 5 kilometres away from Park City heading to Salt Lake City, is worth mentioing. It is a theme park that deals with the Olympic Games and the history of winter sports, and it has a museum, an auditorium, acrobatic ski pistes, bumps, a freestyle area, a cross-country cir-cuit, a rope and zip-line circuit (pretty rough!)... and the olympic bobsleigh piste, where you can see the dramatic descents, and where you can even try this striking and adrenaline-flooding experi-ence, unsuitable for heart patients.

EL ESQU

Con tanto terreno en las pistas y fuera de ellas, el esqu es a lo grande, en una semana no nos aburriremos, hace falta ms de una jornada para conocer cada una de las tres estaciones completamente. Como ya hemos dicho, esquiar en las Wasatchs es esquiar en una nieve polvo, seca poco densa (powder) que es lo que abunda entre diciembre has-ta mitad de marzo, cuando las temperaturas son ms fras. Las estaciones abren el primer fin de semana de diciembre y cierran a me-diados de abril. No es difcil encontrar buen powder en las fechas finales, pero desde mediados de marzo hay muchos das de sol y templanza, que hacen que la nieve pueda estar un poco dura por la maana para pasar a una agradable crema de primavera confor-me el sol acta. De todas formas, dada la al-titud, la fuerte radiacin y el ambiente seco, aqu la nieve no se transforma tanto como

With so much land in the pistes and around them, skiing comes on a larger scale. We wont get bored in a week, as you need longer than a day to get to know each one of the three resorts completely. As we have already mentioned, skiing in the Wasatchs means skiing on powder, dry and not very dense snow, which is the usual one between December and the middle of March, when the temperatures are lower. The resorts open on the first weekend of December, and they close around the middle of April. Its not hard to find good powder in those last days, but from the middle of March there are many sunny and quite warm days, that can make the snow a bit hard in the mornings to turn into a nice creamy spring snow as the sun works on it. Anyway, due to its altitude, the strong radiation and the dry environment, the snow doesnt change as much as in our mountains. If we are looking for broad, supremely groomed and really long pistes,

en nuestras montaas. Si buscamos pistas amplias, con excelente pisado y muy largas, cualquier momento de la temporada es bue-no con nieve excelente garantizada. Si lo que buscamos es esquiar hundidos hasta la cintura en nieve profunda y sutil, entre bos-ques de aspen y pino, mejor ir entre mitad de diciembre y mitad de marzo.

El forfait puede ser para las tres estaciones, es el que normalmente se incluye en los via-jes desde Europa (Internacional Pass), aun-que slo se poda esquiar en una de ellas por da, hasta ahora. A partir de la prxima temporada las estaciones de The Canyons y Park City estarn conectadas por un telef-rico que se est construyendo en el verano de 2014 y una o varias pistas. El forfait ser comn y no se espera incremento de pre-cios en l respecto a 2014. Con esta unin, el dominio pasar a ser el mayor de los Es-tados Unidos, otro motivo ms para visitar estas estaciones.

The pass is valid for all three resorts, and it is the one usually included in the trips from Europe (In-ternational Pass), although it could only be used in one of the resorts per day, until now. From the next season on, the resorts of The Canyons and Park City will be connected by a cable railway that was being built in the summer of 2014, and by one or more pistes. The pass will be com-mon, and we dont expect an increase in the price it had in 2014. With this merger, the territory will become the biggest one in the USA, another reason to visit these resorts.

Before describing each one of them, we must say that the landscape and orography of all

Son montaas re-dondeadas y de laderas relativamente suaves slo en ciertas zonas hay ms barrancos o te-rreno vertical por donde estn los itinerarios ms exigentes. Curiosamente la cobertura del bosque llega hasta las cimas a pesar de la alti-tud, lo que hace muy agradable la sensacin y muy distinta a Europa. Incluso en los das de nevada la visibilidad suele ser aceptable y el sol abunda con casi tantos das soleados como nuestra Sierra Nevada, aunque el regis-tro medio de nieve acumulada (precipitada) durante los inviernos es de casi 9 metros.

Curiously enough, the forest cover reaches

the peaks despite their altitude, which makes

it really nice and different to Europe. Even on

snowy days, visibility is usually acceptable and

it is usually sunny, with as many sunny days as

in our Sierra Nevada, but the average record of

built up snow in winter is around 9 metres.

DEER VALLEY

Quizs la ms coqueta de las tres. Est muy cer-ca de Park City, valle arriba, hay autobuses gra-tuitos en todo momento y se tardan unos 10 mi-nutos desde el centro de la ciudad. Unas 1.500 hectreas de terreno de todas las dificultades prcticamente todo ello tapizado de bosques. La base est a unos 2.100 m. y el punto ms alto ronda los 3.000 m. Las pistas son inmejora-bles, anchas, largas y recorren la montaa des-de la cima hasta la base, pasando por paisajes variados y vistas espectaculares. El 27% son de principiantes, el 41% de nivel medio y el 32% para expertos. Est muy orientada al esqu fami-liar y no escatiman en detalles, desde ayudarte a transportar el equipo en todo momento, ta-quillas gratuitas para dejar las cosas, sealiza-cin perfecta y remontes rpidos y modernos. Todos los servicios y buenos restaurantes en su base y tambin en las pistas. En la revista Ski Magazine fue durante 2008, 2009 y 2010 con-siderada como el mejor resort de Norteamrica.

DEER VALLEY

This is maybe the most charming of the three re-sorts. It is really close to Park City, upwards from the valley, there are free buses going there all the time, and it takes around 10 minutes from the city center to get there. Around 1500 hectares of land, with all the different levels of difficulty, nearly all covered with forest. The base is at around 2100 meters, and the highest point is around 3000 metres. The pistes cannot be any better, wide, long, and cover-ing the whole mountain from top to bottom, going through diverse landscapes and amazing views. 27% of those pistes are for beginners, 41% are me-dium level, and the remaining 32% are for expert skiers. It is really focused on family ski, and no effort is spared, from helping you carry your equipment any time to free lockers to leave your belongings, perfect sign posts and quick and modern lifts. They offer all kinds of services and really good res-taurants, in its base and also on the pistes. It was considered the best resort in North America by Ski Magazine in 2008, 2009 and 2010.

THE CANYONS

Ubicada al otro extremo (oeste). Desde la ca-rretera de acceso resulta tentadora a la vista, como su nombre indica est sobre varias la-deras abarrancadas que se suceden. Tiene un desnivel de 970 metros y es la mayor de las tres, tambin est cubierta de bosques donde abunda el aspen y presenta varios sec-tores que harn las delicias de los freeriders, con fueras de pista de doble diamante` muy empinados y entre bosques, especialmente en los sectores de Peak 5, Ninety Nine y Mur-dock Peak. Algunas pistas son para gozarla y correr mucho, las hay con muros` en los que es difcil no levantar el pie antes del rasante. Los remontes son cmodos y rpidos. Aunque hay pistas para todos los niveles, los expertos se sentirn muy a gusto en ella. Como ya he-mos dicho, a partir de esta prxima temporada estar unida y compartir forfait con Park City.

PARK CITY

La primera en fundarse a principios de los sesenta, lleva el nombre de la ciudad, situa-da entre las dos anteriores, en el centro del gran dominio. Tiene unas 1.500 hectreas de todo tipo de terreno sobre las laderas de

It is located in the other end (west). It appears tempt-ing to the eye from the access road, because, as its name suggests, it is located on a series of cliff hill-sides that follow one another. It has 970 metres of gradient and it is the biggest one of the three resorts. It is also covered with forests, where the aspen is plentiful, and it has many sectors which will delight freeriders, with really steep double diamond off-pistes between woods, specially in the sectors Peak 5, Ninety Nine and Murdock Peak. Some pistes can really be enjoyed at great speed, there are others with walls in which it is hard not to lift your foot before the gradient. The lifts are comfortable and quick. Although we can find all difficulty levels, the expert skiers will find themselves really at ease in this resort. As we have already mentioned, from this next season it will be joined to Park City, and they will hace a common pass.

PARK CITY

This was the first resort of the three to be founded, at the beginning of the 60s. It was named after the city, and it is located be-tween the other two, in the centre of the big territory. It has around 1500 hectares of all

una gran loma que culmina a unos 3.100 m. de altitud en la cima de Jpiter, el pun-to ms elevado de toda la zona. Unos 1.000 metros de desnivel esquiable, donde abun-dan la laderas de bosque con muchas posi-bilidades para esquiar por ellos y una zona alta ms despejada con exigentes corredo-res y buenas palas en los sectores Jpiter, Poneer y McConkeys para quienes bus-quen inclinacin. Remontes rpidos, aun-que todava queda alguna reliquia, y pistas muy largas, bien pisadas, anchas y de to-dos los niveles: 17% de iniciacin, 51% de nivel medio y 32% para expertos. Se accede

La estacin aranesa cum-pli medio siglo en 2014 y lo celebr ampliando su territorio y sus infraestructuras. Aparte de mejoras en servicios

e instalaciones, la ampliacin ha supuesto un rdago en la compe-

ticin de las estaciones ms grandes de Espaa por el record en kilmetros de

pistas. Con 153 kilmetros, 99 balizados y el resto de itinerarios de fuera pista, Baqueira se ha convertido en la estacin mayor, pero lo ms importante es que el dominio esquia-ble ha pasado a tener 2.166 hectreas y las posibilidades para el fuera de pista han au-mentado considerablemente. Lo que ya era para muchos el valor supremo de BB, su gran terreno virgen, ha crecido y lo ha hecho prin-cipalmente con la incorporacin del sector de Saumet.

Saumet era ya un terreno codiciado por free-riders y esquiadores de travesa y tanto fo-queando como caminando con los esqus a la espalda, muchos buscaban en sus palas y bosques lneas intactas en un terreno de lo

The Aran Valley resort turned half a centu-ry in 2014, and celebrated it increasing its land and infrastructures. Besides meaning better services and facilities, the expansion has meant to go all-out in the competition between the biggest Spanish resorts to see which one has the record of piste kilometres. With its 153 kilometres, 99 os which are marked, and the rest of off-piste intineraries, Baqueira has become the biggest re-sort, but the most important thing is that the skia-ble land has now reached 2166 hectares, and the off-piste possibilities has increased substantially. What was already considered by many the great-est value of BB, its great unspoilt land, has grown wider, and has became so by the addition of the Saumet sector.

Saumet was already a desired land for freerid-ers and cross-country skiers, and even with the skins on, or carrying the skis on their backs, many people used to go there to look for intact lines in its slopes and woods, in a land so playful and tricky. It was usual to see from the chairlifts in Baqueira some lonely trail on the sunny side

ms juguetn y ratonero. Era frecuente desde los telesillas de Baquiera ver alguna traza soli-taria por la solana de Saumet sorteando pinos y rocas, y era frecuente sentir mucha envidia por los afortunados que las haban impreso.

Ahora, gracias al nuevo telesqu, toda esta zona queda al alcance de muchos y se hace raro poder repetir varias veces sus palones en una misma jornada, cuando antes haba que sufrir un buen rato para poder disfru-tar de una preciosa bajada que siempre se haca corta. Quizs con menos esfuerzo y encanto, y sin el sentimiento de recompen-sa que ofrece el ascender por nuestros pro-pios medios en busca del descenso, ahora se puede disfrutar mucho y repetir o probar todas las lneas que esconden las laderas de Saumet. Y si queremos seguir buscando lo exclusivo, tanto desde la cabecera del telesqu, como desde Orri, podemos ascen-der por la arista o por la ladera que lleva a la cima del Basivr para encontrar nieve sin

Now, thanks to the new ski-lift, this whole area can

be reached by many, and it feels weird to be able

to repeat its great slopes in one same day, given

that earlier, you had to suffer a great deal to be

able to enjoy a beautiful descent, that was always

too short. Maybe with less effort and charm, and

devoid of the feeling of reward that offers to as-

cent by our own means looking for the descent,

now we are able to enjoy more and repeat or try

all the lines hidden in the slopes in Saumet. And

if we still want to look for more exclusive experi-

ences, either from the head of the lift or from Orri,

we can ascend by the ridge or by the slope that

leads to the summit of the Basivr, in order to find

non tread-on snow and immense landscapes in

a veryAlpine piece of land.

You can reach Saumet from the Orri sector, which is one of the entrances to Baqueira. There, you can take the new chairlift Jess Ser-ra, which takes you to the Beret sector. From the head of the chairlift, instead of following the pistes leading to Beret, we will take the one that takes us back to Orri, almost following the lift from below. Half through the piste we can see the Saumet lift to the left (right from the lift when going up). This lift will take us up to 2384 me-tres, to a small plateau around half way in the long and beautiful ridge that leads from Orri to the summit of the emblematic Bacivr (2644 metres), a classic peak often visited by cross-country skiers.

NORTH AND SOUTH ORIENTATION

From the head of the lift we can ski down to its base following a pair of enjoyable pistes that make the most of the orography of the mountain, one of them black and the other one red, suitable for high level skiers, both of which go across the mountain, one down the South slope, and the other one down the North. But, besides the new pistes, the best thing of this land are the beautiful and demanding off-pistes we can find to both sides of the platform where the lift takes us.

pisar y panoramas inmensos en un terreno de lo ms alpino.

A Saumet se llega desde el sector de Orri que es una de las entradas principales de Baquei-ra. Ah se toma el nuevo telesilla Jess Serra que es el que lleva al sector de Beret. En la ca-becera del telesilla, en vez de seguir las pistas que nos llevan a Beret, tomaremos la pista que nos devuelve a Orri y que baja casi debajo del remonte. A mitad de pista se puede ver el te-lesqu de Saumet a la izquierda (derecha del remonte segn se asciende). Este remonte nos sube hasta los 2.384 m., a un pequeo plat ms o menos en la mitad de la larga y bonita arista que desde Orri llega hasta la cima del em-blemtico Bacivr (2.644 m.), una cima clsica frecuentada por esquiadores de travesa.

ORIENTACIN NORTE Y SUR

Desde la cabecera del remonte se puede es-quiar hasta su base por un par de entretenidas pistas que aprovechan muy bien la orografa de la montaa, una pista negra y otra roja ade-cuada a esquiadores de nivel alto que reco-rren la loma, una por la vertiente Sur y la otra por la Norte. Pero, adems de las nuevas pis-tas, lo mejor de este espacio son los bonitos y exigentes fuera de pista que podemos encon-trar a ambos lados de la plataforma donde nos deja el telesqu.

Hacia el norte el desnivel es menor, pero su orientacin asegura una nieve excelen-te conservada por la umbra. Es una zona de acumulacin por lo que es muy frecuente encontrar nieve polvo profunda. En el plano de pistas figuran dos pistas negras, Graba y Sanglit que en realidad son itinerarios sin pi-sar y que dan acceso a un montn de terreno virgen con buenos tubos y algunas barreras de rocas que hay que sortear. Graba es muy directa, baja desde la salida del remonte por una fuerte pendiente salpicada de pequeos pinos y Sanglit es una lnea que busca una concavidad de la ladera con algunas palas muy pronunciadas y, especialmente, en su parte final, es un cono de acumulacin de que despus de las nevadas suele tener una nieve profunda excelente. Son lneas difciles para esquiadores muy buenos, que adems pueden presentar riesgo de avalanchas o de zonas venteadas y endurecidas, por lo que es de rigor no intentarlas cuando estn cerradas.

Hacia el sur, desde la cabecera del remonte (a la derecha) parte la pista negra Orri de Tre-dos, que al igual que las anteriores, no es una pista sino un itinerario sin pisar y con muchas posibles variantes, la variante ms frecuenta

Facing North the gradient is lower, but its ori-entation guarantees a great quality snow, pre-served by the shade. It is build-up area, so it is usual to find there deep powder snow. In the pistes plan there are two black pistes, Graba and Sanglit, which are really non tread-on intineraries, from which you can access a lot of virgin land with good pipes and some rock barriers you have to avoid. Sanglit is quite straight, it goes down from the end of the lift through a strong gradient splattered with small pines, and Graba is a line that looks for the con-cavity of the mountainside, with some steep slopes, and, specially in its final part, it is a build-up cone that usually has deep excellent snow after snowfalls. They both are difficult lines for very good skiers, that can also present risk of avalanche and windy or hardened areas, so it is essential not to try them when they are closed.

Facing South, from the head of the lif (to the right) arises the black piste Orri of Tredos, which, just as the previous ones, is not a piste, but a non tread-on itinerary with many possible de-tours. The most frequented variant is the most straight one, that goes down to Orri, first across

En esta misma ladera y comenzando en la cabecera del telesilla tambin podemos derivar hacia el Este para buscar las lneas ms escondidas y menos frecuentadas, hay varias posibilidades y los conocedores del terreno bus-can las mejores alternativas, a veces remontan-do andando algn tramo que nos permite acce-der a las partes ms orientales, las ms solitarias. La zona es un poco laberntica y tiene algunos cortados entre pinos que hay que sortear, por ello, no es un sitio para seguir huellas anteriores si no estamos muy seguros de nuestro nivel o sin conocer perfectamente el terreno.

some hard slopes, and then across the woods, through a pair of parallel pipes, the most difficult part of the itinerary, which leaves us in the lower part of the wood, and where it joins the itinerar-ies coming from the Cara Nord (Noth Face) of Baqueira. In this same hillside, starting from the head of the chairlift, we can also face East, in order to find the most hidden, least frequent-ed lines. There are several possibilities, and the experts of this land often search the best choices, sometimes even climbing some sec-tions on foot, to get to the most eastern areas, the loneliest ones. This area is a bit labyrinthine and has some cliffs between pines that need to be avoided, so this is not a place to fol low previous tracks i f we are not very sure of our level or we dont know the land perfectly.

EL MODELO AMERICANO`

La expansin en el rea de Saumet es un buen ejemplo del modelo que siguen las estaciones que apuestan por el fuera de pista para satis-facer a un cierto tipo de clientela apasionada, que demanda no slo buenas pistas sino ac-ceso a mucho terreno para jugar con la nie-ve y los obstculos naturales en un entorno lo ms salvaje posible. Este modelo trata de dar acceso al mayor dominio posible con el menor nmero de remontes posibles, lo cual, aparte de una optimizacin de la inversin y un aho-rro evidente, permite dejar mucho terreno en sus condiciones naturales, en contra del mo-delo opuesto que transforma las laderas en una sucesin de pistas paralelas una junto a otra ocupando toda la montaa.Es un modelo que hemos llamado americano porque en las estaciones de ltima generacin de USA y Canad la tendencia es esa: un remonte que lleva lo ms alto posible, una o dos pistas con-vencionales y el resto simples indicaciones de la zona de entrada a la lnea o itinerario que suele tener tantas variantes como trazas de los esquiadores y que se clasifican segn su dificultad con uno, dos o tres diamantes ne-gros. Por supuesto, que al ser dominio de la estacin en todo momento se controlan los riesgos meteorolgicos o nivolgicos, por lo que, ms an que en cualquier pista, en estos itinerarios es imprescindible seguir las indica-ciones, no intentarlos cuando estn cerrados y valorar nuestra tcnica y capacidad para afrontarlos con seguridad. n

THE AMERICAN MODEL

The expansion to the Saumet area is a good ex-ample of the model followed by the resorts that bet on the off-piste to satisfy a certain type of passionate clients who demand, not only good pistes, but also access to a lot of land in which to play with snow and natural obstacles in an environment as wild as can be. This mod-el tries to give access to the widest area with the minimum number of lifts, which, apart from optimizing the investment and meaning obvi-ous savings, allows the preservation of a lot of land in its natural conditions, in opposition to the model that transforms the mountainsides in a series of parallel pistes, one next to the other, taking up the whole mountain. Weve called it american model, because in the latest gen-eration resorts in USA and Canada, that is the trend to be seen: a lift that takes you as high as possible, one or two conventional pistes and the rest just indications of the entry to the line or itinerary that usually has as many variations as skier tracks, and that are classified according to their difficulty with one, two or three black diamonds. Of course, being part of the resort, the snow or weather risks are constantly mon-itored, so it is essential (even more so than in other resorts) to follow the signs in these itin-eraries, not to try them when they are closed, and to assess our technique and ability to face them securely. n

RUTA DESCONOCIDA

La Maliciosa es para Guadarrama un emblema. Para muchos es la montaa ms altiva y caracterstica de la Sierra. Su perfil es nico e in-confundible. Es una proa que mira al Sur dominando todo el paisaje que est a sus pies desde la Sierra hasta La Mancha.

La Maliciosa is a symbol to Guadarra-ma. Many think it is the most arrogant and characteristic mountain in the Sie-rra. Its outline is unique and unmistaka-ble. It is a prow that aims South, over-looking the whole landscape at its feet, from the Sierra to La Mancha.

Con 2.227 metros, no es la montaa ms alta de Guadarrama pero su silueta es inconfundi-

ble, Sus laderas se levantan unos mil metros sobre los pueblos de Navacerrada y Becerril, y su aspecto es imponente y spero. Quizs su nombre provenga de su aspecto altivo y enris-cado y el color oscuro de su cima, pero lo ms probable es que sea por su terreno lleno de canchales y roquedos que lo hace imposible para las caballeras, antiguamente los terrenos de este tipo se llamaban maliciosos.

Desde muchos puntos de la ciudad de Madrid se puede ver su perfil. Y es perfectamente reco-nocible en el paisaje de fondo que aparece en el retrato ecuestre del prncipe Baltasar Carlos, una de las obras ms conocidas de Velazquez.

Por su orientacin al Sur, no es de las cimas que capta ms nieve, pero, a veces, se carga lo suficiente como para poder esquiarla. Sus vertientes Oeste y Sur difcilmente llegan a tener suficiente nieve, siendo pocos los aos

With its 2227 metres, it is not the highest mountain in Guadarrama, but its silhou-ette is unmistakable. Its mountainsides rise around one thousand metres over the villages of Navacerrada and Becerril, and its look is impres-sive and rough. Maybe it has its name from the arro-gant and rocky look and from the dark colour of its summit, but it is most probably due to the land filled with screes and rocky areas around it. This makes it impossible for cavalry to cross it, so in the old days, these kind of lands were called malicious.

Its outline can be seen from many points in the city of Madrid. And it is perfectly recognizable in the back-ground of the equestrian portrait of the Prince Baltasar Carlos, one of the most famous works of Velazquez.

It is not one of the peaks with the biggest amount of snow, due to its South orientation, but some-times it can have enough to ski on. Its West and South sides hardly ever have enough snow, being few the years, and few the days, on which we can ski there. But between the rocks in its summit, fac-

y pocos los das en que se pueden esquiar. Pero entre las rocas de su cima, mirando al Sudeste, hay una canal llamada la Canal de Todos, bien conocida por los montaeros, ya que es una ascensin invernal clsica y un descenso en esqu de lo ms singular y atractivo de Guadarrama. Apenas 300 me-tros de buena inclinacin en un escenario espectacular entre riscos y estrecheces que, casi todos los aos, presenta buenas condi-ciones para esquiarla entre enero y marzo.

Si la Maliciosa mirase al Norte en vez de al Sur, sera una joyita de corredores y palo-nes de nieve. Su orientacin hace que la mayora de las vertientes no puedan ser esquiadas. La canal de Todos es una lnea muy esttica y que suele cargarse ms, lo que permite descenderla con esqus mu-chas temporadas aunque sea slo unos po-cos das tras fuertes nevadas. Describimos la ruta ms frecuente y que se puede hacer cmodamente con esqus de principio a fin, que es partiendo del puerto de Navacerra-da y regresando a l, esquiando la canal hasta donde la nieve lo permite y regresan-do al puerto deshaciendo el camino, lo que incluye ascender la canal (piolet y crampo-nes) que tambin es una buena actividad.

Todos, well known by the mountaineers, as it is

a classic winter ascent and a quite unique and

attractive ski descent in Guadarrama. Hardly 300

metres of good gradient in a spectacular scenery

between crags and narrow passes, that, almost

every year from January to March, shows good

skiing conditions.

If La Maliciosa faced Noth instead of South, it

would be a jewell full of corridors and big slopes

filled with snow. However, its orientation makes

it impossible for most of its sides to be skied on.

The Canal de Todos is a highly aesthetic line

which usually has more snow, so that it can be

descended on skis many seasons, even though

it is just for a few days, after strong snowfalls. We

will describe the most frequent route, that can be

easily made on skis from beginning to end. We

will start in the pass of Navacerrada and go back

to it, skiing the channel as long as the snow al-

lows it and back to the pass retracing our path,

which means climbing the channel (with ice axe

and crampons), also a good activity.

EL ACCESO

La ruta ms cmoda parte del puerto de Navacerrada (1880 m.) y sube junto a las pistas de la Bola del Mundo hasta su cima (2268 m.). Desde ah se toma rumbo Sur y se esqua la suave ladera que nos lleva al collado del piornal, desde el collado slo queda ascender unos cien metros, hasta la cima de La Maliciosa (2227 m.). La canal de Todos est justo a la izquierda (Este) de las rocas de la cima. Comienza en un rella-no bastante amplio que hay entre las rocas de la cima y otras rocas que hay ms a la izquierda, no tiene prdida.

EL DESCENSO

La canal comienza con inclinacin suave y lue-go moderada y se va estrechando segn se baja, hasta un embudo de piedras que a veces afloran de la nieve. Nada ms pasar esta estre-chez, la canal gira a la derecha (Oeste) y apare-ce otro pasillo muy esttico que se va abriendo

ACCESS

The easiest route begins in the pass of Navac-errada (1880 metres) and goes up close to the pistes of Bola del Mundo right to its summit (2268 metres). From that point we turn South and ski the soft slope that takes us to the Piornal saddle. From there we just have to go up another hun-dred metres to get to the peak of La Maliciosa (2227 metres). The Canal de Todos is right to the left (East) from the rocks on the top. It begins in a quite spacious flat area between the top rocks and another group of rocks a bit more to the left, it cant be missed.

THE DESCENT

The channel has a soft gradient in the beginning that turns into a moderate one. It becomes narrower as we go down, until we reach a funnel of stones that can sometimes surface over the snow. Right after this narrowness, the channel turns right (West) and we find another beautiful corridor that opens itself until it

hasta convertirse en parte de la amplia ladera que mira al Sur con vistas espectaculares. Nor-malmente, aqu o pocos metros ms abajo des-aparecer la nieve a unos 300 o 400 metros por debajo de la cima de la Maliciosa.

OTRAS POSIBILIDADES

Para esquiar la canal de Todos y ascender y descender por otras rutas:

Puerto de Navacerrada a La Barranca: es una excursin que hace el mismo camino ya descrito pero, en vez de regresar al puerto de Navacerrada, despus de bajar la canal de Todos o bien, descender por su vertiente Sur (cosa que con esqus es algo que slo se pue-de hacer algunos aos y durante pocos das), se toma rumbo Oeste y se baja por terreno in-cmodo hasta el hotel y el rea de recreo de La Barranca (1450 m.). Es una excursin preciosa, pero que como hemos dicho muy pocas veces es factible con esqus e incluso con mucha car-ga de nieve en altura hay que contar con falta de nieve, por lo menos desde los 1700 metros, por lo que siempre habr que andar un buen trecho. (ver mapa al final del artculo). Tambin hay que contar que el punto de inicio y de fin de la ruta estn muy alejados por lo que hay que prever un vehculo para el regreso.

ALTERNATIVES

To ski the Canal de Todos and ascend and de-scend other routes:

Pass of Navacerrada to La Barranca: this trip follows the same route we have already de-scribed, but instead of going back to Navacerrada after descending the Canal de Todos or its South face (which is something that can only be done on skis some years and for a few days), you face West and go down some unconfortable piece of land until you reach the hotel and recreation area of La Barranca (1450 metres). This is a beautiful trip, but as we have already mentioned, it is almost impossi-ble to do it on skis, and even when there is a good amount of snow in the higher areas, we have to be countin
