September 2019 Dear Parent/Guardian Re: Assessment in Year 10 Everybody involved with schools will be thinking about the year ahead. Many students in Year 10 will know exactly what lay ahead, others may not. It is a time when students and perhaps parents/guardians get a little anxious about examinations and other assessments. This is perfectly normal. As a school community, our thoughts are with those KS4 students who are at this vital stage in their journey through school. This booklet can be used by both student and parent and will hopefully address any questions or concerns they may have. Whilst every effort has been made to ensure the information is clear, if after reading this information you have any further questions, contact details for each subject can be found at the back. You may also find assessment documents on the school website helpful. All subject departments have supplied details of the controlled assessments and examinations in Year 10. All pupils will sit assessments throughout the year. Students may need to manage a variety of non-examined assessment (controlled assessment) or coursework, as well as having to prepare for examinations. This guide is designed to help both pupils and parents/guardians to plan carefully to meet the challenges ahead. External examinations in the summer are in May and June. It is therefore imperative that holidays must not be booked within term time. It is vital over the next 10 months that students miss as little school as possible, other than for genuine illness. All students will be provided with examination information and an individual timetable. Students will need to talk to their subject teachers to ensure they are aware of which examinations they are entered for and the suitable areas to revise. Art and Design (WJEC)

Assessment: Weighting? When?

Coursework: One unit of work. This topic/theme is chosen by the pupil and guided by teachers. This is an independent and ongoing project to be worked on consistently in class and at home. This commences at the start of year 10 and continues into Year 11.

Obtaining a GCSE Maths Revision Guide will provide helpful support for the above examinations. Such guides

(CGP, Letts, Longmans, Hodder) are readily available at most bookshops and online.

Textbooks and revision guides written for the new WJEC qualifications, “GCSE Mathematics: Numeracy” and

“GCSE Mathematics”, will be particularly well-suited for the current specifications.

A scientific calculator is needed in every lesson so that pupils become fluent in the more complex functions on

their own particular calculator. The Casio fx 85 series is very popular at GCSE level.

A full geometry set including a protractor and compasses is needed in every lesson so that pupils learn to use

them with precision.

Pupils have access to the ‘Dr Frost’ website which is a flexible online revision tool. (www.drfrostmaths.com

pupils can obtain log in details from their teacher).

Regular learning of all grammar, particularly the formation of different tenses, as well as all vocabulary covered in lessons, is vital and help at home can be given with this.

MU1 Performance. Individual and ensemble performances to be internally

assessed.

MU2 Composition. Student will create short compositions based upon the

4 Areas of Study (see below).

Controlled assessment: 1 completed composition

All composition must be undertaken in the Music department for

authenticity purpose. Students receive two-three hours of composing

lessons each fortnight but should also attend lunchtimes or after school to

complete their work to a high standard. Teacher support is also offered to

all students outside of lesson time.

There will be practical examinations in Year 11 that will count towards the

Ways of supporting at home:

Students should be aware of science in the news and how it impacts on everyday life. You could help them with

scientific language and encourage them to read articles to widen their general understanding of scientific

literature. Scientific literacy is an important part of the new curricula, students are expected to understand

subject specific vocabulary and be able to extract key information from scientific texts.

Encourage students to prepare thoroughly for tests and assessments, but most importantly, remind students to

seek support from their teachers when they find anything difficult to understand.

Ethics, Philosophy and Skills

Within this subject, pupils will study three open questions one per term:

Healthy body, healthy mind?

What is a healthy relationship?

Why is it important to look after the environment?

These questions are explored covering ethics and philosophy and health and wellbeing rich topics. The pupils will

also complete the Skills Certificate Challenge qualification graded A*- C – Level 2 and a Pass at Level 1 D-G. The

qualification focuses on developing the following skills, which will aid pupils’ development across the curriculum.

Pupils will be assessed throughout Year 10 and 11 in order to gain an overall GCSE.

The Skills Challenge Certificate consists of four components that are followed by all learners: Individual Project Enterprise and Employability Challenge Global Citizenship Challenge Community Challenge

Grading: Component achievement is based on a learner’s ability to meet the learning outcomes. Each component is awarded a summative grade;

Level 1 Pass; Level 2 Pass; Level 2 Merit; Level 2 Distinction.

Assessors will allocate a score for each learning outcome and collate the points across the whole component to provide a total score. The summative grade for the component will be calculated from the total score. Examples of how this works: Learner A
