The Mahatma and The PoetCompiled and edited by Sabyasachi Bhattacharya

From NBT’s Treasure Trove

Mahatma Gandhi and Gurudev Rabindranath Tagore shared a unique bond and often exchangedletters with each other on various issues. Both of them had built educational institutions basedon their ideologies in rural areas that were not sponsored by the British Government.

Mahatma Gandhi was deeply influenced by the Tagore’s experiments at Santiniketanand later on adopted the method at his ashrams in Wardha and Sevagram. Gandhiji alsoframed the fundamentals for ‘Basic Education’ in India.

In 1935, due to financial situation, Gurudev Rabindranath Tagore was facing difficultiesto run Santiniketan and asked Gandhiji for help. On the occasion of Birth Anniversary ofMahatma Gandhi on 2 October, we are producing some of the letters exchanged between thetwo great personalities taken from the NBT book entitled The Mahatma and The Poet.

My dear Mahatmaji,I am glad Suren had an opportunity

to discuss with you in detail the financialsituation of the asrama during hisrecent visit to Wardha. I know how busyyou are with your various activities andthough I have often thought of telling youof my difficulties I have never done sobefore. But Charlie insisted that youmust be informed about the situationand then only I gave permission todiscuss it with you. Over thirty years Ihave practically given my all to thismission of my life and so long as I wascomparatively young and active I facedall my difficulties unaided and throughmy struggles the institution grew up inits manifold aspects. And now, however,

when I am 75 I feel the burden of myresponsibility growing too heavy forme, that owing to some deficiency in methat my appeals fail to find adequateresponse in the heart of my peoplethough the cause that I have done myutmost to serve is certainly valuable.Constant begging excursions withabsurdly meager results added to thestrain of my daily anxieties and havebrought my physical constitution nearlyto an extreme verge of exhaustion. NowI know of none else but yourself whosewords may help my countrymen torealize that it is worth their while tomaintain this institution in fullness ofits functions and to relieve me ofperpetual worry at this last period of mywaning life and health.

With deepest love,Rabindranath Tagore

Gandhi undertakes to help TagoreWardha,

13 October 1935Dear Gurudev,

Your touching letter was receivedonly on 11th inst. when I was in the midstof meetings. In the hope of delivering itto me personally Anil needlesslydetained it. I hope he is now quiterestored to health. Yes, I have thefinancial position before me now. Youmay depend upon my straining everynerve to find the required money. I amgroping. I am trying to find the way out.It will take sometime before I can reportthe result of my search to you.

It is unthinkable that you should haveto undertake another begging mission atyour age. The necessary funds mustcome to you without your having to stirout of Santiniketan.

Delhi,27 March 1936

Dear Gurudev,God has blessed my poor effort. And

here is the money. Now you will relievethe public mind by announcingcancellation of the rest of the programme.

May God keep you for many a yearto come.

Yours with love,M. K. Gandhi

Respected Sir,

Please find the enclosed draft forRs.60,000 which we believe is thedeficit on the expenses on Shantiniketanto cover for which you have beenexhibiting your art from place to place. When we heard this we felt humiliated. We believe that at your advanced age andin your weak state of health you oughtnot to have to undertake these arduoustours. We must confess that we knowvery little of the institution except thename. But we have not been unaware ofyour great fame as the Poet of the age.You are not only the greatest Poet ofIndia, you are the Poet of Humanity. Yourpoems remind one of the hymns of theancient Rishis. You have by yourunrivalled gifts raised the status of ourcountry. And we feel that those whomGod has blessed with means shouldrelieve you of the burden of finding thefunds required for the conduct of theinstitution. Our contribution is a humbleeffort in that direction. For reasonswhich need not be stated we prefer toremain anonymous. We hope that youwill now cancel all the engagements takenfor raising the sum above mentioned.

Praying for your long life to continuethe service you are rendering to ourcountry.

We remainYour Humble Countrymen

Diwali is the festival of enlightenment. In the multicultural set-up of India, it is apeople’s festival. We wish all our Readers a Happy Diwali!

– Readers’ Club Bulletin Team

DiwaliIndira Noopur

From NBT’s Treasure Trove

Diwali, also known as Deepavali, fallssometime between the months ofOctober and November when a pleasant, mild, winter climate has set in. Ourhearts rejoice because by this time ofyear we have had enough of the heat andhumidity and the pestilence of myriadsof crawling, flying insects.

Diwali is widely celebrated all overIndia. Many weeks before the festivalpeople get busy: houses are cleaned, walls whitewashed, furniture polishedand every nook and corner cleared ofcobwebs. New clothes have to bestitched for the children and sweetmeatsordered to be sent to the homes ofrelatives and friends. Diwali iscelebrated in honour of Lakshmi, thegoddess of wealth and prosperity, and itis believed that Lakshmi only entershomes that are clean and spotless. Manydays before Diwali the mother of Anju,Shobha and Rakesh buys colouredpowders to make rangoli designs, dry

Page 12: Readers’ Club Bulletin · Readers’ Club Bulletin ikBd eap cqysfVu Vol. 18, No. 10, October 2013 o"kZ 18] vad 10] vDVwcj 2013 Editor / laiknd Manas Ranjan Mahapatra ekul jatu egkik=k

going to make?” asked Anju. “She seemsto be doing nothing except makingcotton wicks!”

“We have such a large house,”answered her mother. “She will have tomake a lot of wicks because we will needat least five hundred oil-lamps. Theremustn’t be a dark corner in the house.”

“Ma, why does Lakshmi like oil-lamps more than other lights?” askedAnju.

“That’s not really so,” replied hermother. “In olden days there was noelectricity, there were not even waxcandles. People only had oil-lamps.Even today many people believe thatearthen oil-lamps are the purest andbest. And even if they put up electricbulbs outside their homes they will onlyuse oil-lamps for prayer. I like oil-lampsbest because their gentle light does nothurt the eyes. And at least once a yearthe poor potter who makes them can earnsome money. But now that oil hasbecome so expensive, few people canafford to light oil-lamps.”

So, at long last, dawns the morningof Diwali. On this morning there is noneed to shake the children awake or nagthem to get out of bed. They have beenlooking forward to this day. The morningis filled with joyous sounds and the houselooks festive: new clothes, colourful

fruit for sweetmeats, and cloth to stitchnew clothes. As in other years, sheexplains the significance of Diwali andsays, “When you grow up whether youcelebrate other festivals or not you mustpromise never to forget Diwali.”

Little Anju asks in all her wide-eyedinnocence, “Ma, has anyone ever seenLakshmi? Has she ever visited ourhome?” Her mother smiles and replies,“Beti when we say Lakshmi has enteredour home we really mean that happinessand plenty have come to it. It is said thatwhoever maintains a clean, neat and tidyhome is blessed by a visit from Lakshmi.Lazy people who shirk work and don’tbother to clean their homes neverprosper in life. It is also said thatLakshmi showers her blessing only onthose who are kind and cheerful. Peoplewho always grumble, backbite and findfault with everything are neversuccessful.”

Rakesh said, “This time we must getelectric bulbs, like those that the richmoneylender has. How bright andcolourful his house looks duringDiwali!”

“Many People also light candles,”replied his mother. “But if you ask me, Ilike our old-fashioned oil-lamps madeof baked clay best.”

“Ma, how many wicks is Grandma

Shobha is the eldest child of thefamily. She loves to draw, so her motherputs her in charge of making the rangolidesigns. Anju and Rakesh do not want tobe left out of anything. They sit withGrandma twisting cotton swabs intowicks and help their elder sister with therangoli.

Rakesh and his mother take outhundreds of earthen oil-lamps from a tuband after filling them with oil put wicksin them. Then they are arranged in neatrows along the wall and parapets, in theverandahs and rooms — just abouteverywhere. As soon as twilightdescends, these lamps are lit. And whenyou go along the road, past houses allaglitter with myriads of lights, what asplendid spectacle it is!

Diwali falls on a moonless night inOctober or November. Nature made thisnight the darkest of the year but mankindhas made it the brightest.

Lamps are lit and homage paid toGoddess Lakshmi. Earlier, the puja placehad been carefully swept and rangolipatterns drawn on the floor. Flowers, fruitand sweets are offered to the gods and

children’s foreheads are daubed withvermillion powder. Clay images ofLakshmi and Ganesh festooned withlights are later taken out in processionthrough the streets for worship.

After the prayers, the children areallowed to let off their fireworks. Theyhave been lighting their crackers days

before Diwali. Though their parentscannot stand the loud bangs, thechildren, particularly Rakesh, love themand bang bangs are heard everywhere.Rockets are fired into the dark skies andthey explode into a thousand stars. Butthere are also many nasty accidents.

Children love distributing thecartons of sweets. Wherever they go towish people a happy Diwali, they aregiven sweets. They eat so many that formonths after Diwali they cannot bear thesight of them.

There is a legend associated withDiwali. It was celebrated for the firsttime in Ayodhya when Sri Ramachandra,Lakshmana, Sita and Hanuman returnedvictorious to Ayodhya after defeatingRavana of Lanka. The people of Ayodhyaused ghee to light their oil-lamps andmade merry for a whole day and night.Since then, people have celebratedDiwali to commemorate Rama’s victoryover Ravana with the same enthusiasm.By converting the darkest night into thebrightest of the year – a symbol iscreated for the triumph of the light oftruth over the darkness of falsehood, thevictory of knowledge over ignorance, evil and wickedness, all achieved byman’s efforts. This is the true messageof Diwali expressed in the sparkling ofmillions of lights, laughter and gaiety.

Diwali is a Hindu festival, especiallyof the trading class, for whom it alsocoincides with the beginning of a newfinancial year, when they open their newcash registers and books of account. But no longer are festivals the monopolyof any one community. All communitiesand classes celebrate them. On Diwali afamily of foreigners, who lived oppositeAnju’s house lit oil-lamps. On Eid, shereceive vermicelli pudding from theirMuslim friends Salma and Hassan.Today Anju will send them sweets inreturn.

Anju lit a sparkler. Rakesh fired arocket and a multi-flamed fire-bomb.Some poor children from theneighbourhood stood watching. Theycould not afford to buy fireworks oftheir own.

Anju’s mother took a packet ofsparklers and told her daughter, “Givethese to them.” Then she brought somesweets from the house. The children’sfaces lit up.

This is the true spirit of Diwali. There is more joy in bringing happinessand smiles to the faces of people thanin letting off crackers and making a lotof noise.

There were once four brothers who livedin a village. When their father andmother died, the three elder brothersleft for city to earn livelihood, leavingbehind their youngest brother with theirwives in the village. The three brotherswere married at that time, but theyoungest was still unmarried. Whileleaving home, they asked their wives tolook after their brother nicely.

The three sister-in-laws startedtaking care of the younger brother, buteach of them kept on insisting him tomarry her younger sister. Theirinsistence became unbearable for himand the poor boy decided to leave thehouse.

They were offended by his decisionand said sarcastically, “Our sisters areobviously not good enough for you, sowe will see if you succeed in marryingthe great Princess Belmanti.”

Belmanti was a legendary figure andwas famous for her beauty in theprovince.

The youngest brother went out insearch of Princess Belmanti. As he waswalking around, he entered a junglewhere he found a hut of a saint. He

Princess BelmantiRadha Kant Bharti

cleaned the hut and its entrance. Whenthe saint woke up he saw his hut beingcleaned up. “Who could have done allthis for me,” he thought.

He looked around and saw a boy andasked him what he wanted. The boy toldhim that he wanted to marry PrincessBelmanti. The saint said, “Go straightand on the way you will find a bel tree(wood apple tree). It will have only onefruit. Pluck the fruit and bring it to me.But don’t by any chance, look back.” Hewent there and plucked the fruit andbrought it. The saint asked him to takethe fruit home and break it.

While going towards his home hefelt thirsty, he saw a well nearby. As hereached near the well, the fruit droppedand broke. From that fruit, PrincessBelmanti came out, all dressed up withbeautiful clothes and precious jewellery.

The boy went to the village to get aPalki (palanquin). In the meantime, theprincess felt very thirsty. At this verymoment, a midwife also came to fetchwater from the well.

The princess asked her for water. The midwife gave her the bucket andasked her to fetch water herself. When

the princess was trying to fetch water, the midwife attacked her, took herclothes and jewellery and pushed herinto the well. She herself wore theprecious jewellery and clothes andwaited for the boy. When the boy cameback with a Palki, the midwife sat on it.The boy thought that she was theprincess, and took her to his home.

One day the four brothers weregoing towards the city to makearrangement for the wedding andstopped at the well to drink water. Whenthe eldest brother put a bucket to fetchwater from the well, he saw a beautifulflower. He was not able to retrieve theflower in spite of all his efforts. Theother two brothers also tried their bestto collect the flower, but were notsuccessful. At last the youngest brotherput the bucket into the well and flowerjumped into the bucket.

They came home and gave midwifethe flower. She recoiled when she sawit and threw it on ashes. But the flowersand leaves grew on the ashes.

The midwife threw the flower again. This time a bel tree sprouted overnightfrom the ashes. The horrified midwifetook the tree and gave it to a gardener.

The gardener who took the plant saidthat he would give half of the fruits tothem. Only one fruit grew, however, the

boy requested the gardener to give it tohim.

When the boy broke the fruit (bel),Princess Belmanti came out of it. Themidwife was buried alive and theprincess married the boy. Even thoughit was uttered in sarcasm that the boyshould marry Princess Belmanti, itcame true after great hardship.

Sometimes things happen to you and youdon’t even come to know.

“Deluge?”“Wait a minute, I’ll tell you, let me

think.”The day was heavy and dull. As I was

returning from my school, the weatherbecame tempestuous, followed by anominous silence. I saw a large metal stripburning in the sky. Before I could evenrealize that it was a bolt of lightning, Iheard a sound, louder than any cracker Ihad ever burst during Diwali. It was thesound of a thunderclap.

Anecdotal EuphoriaCadet Lalit Kumar

A board alongside the road caughtmy attention which read, ‘L K Nagar –3km’. I realized that I was required tocycle faster, because at that speed Icould not hope to reach home before theapproaching storm. I couldn’t even findany shelter.

“Better late than never,” readanother board. “Better to reach homedry than…” my inner voice had not evenfinished when the chain came out andthe pedals got jammed, resulting in myforehead striking against the handle bar.But I was safe.

My Page

I came down forthwith and lookedfor a cycle repair. I had no option but tocarry the bicycle. I carried it on oneshoulder and school bag on the other.

Suddenly my bicycle flashed – theflash reiterating on my face. As I lookedup, I heard a thunderous sound followedby torrential rain. I got in a derelictroadside room, abandoned for years, butall the same, well lit.

“Deluge, Lalit, Lalit.”

A faint voice propelled me to thinkif someone knew my name.

“Humbug,” “Oh no…”

The light went off or did someoneturn it off?

“Good Night!”

An eerie voice reached my ear.

“What?” I was vexed.

Exasperated by the commotion, Ikept the bag in my lap. “Lalit put on yournet.” Another low but commandingvoice was heard.

“What nonsense, are you stupid.” Ireplied in an irksome tone thinkingwhere do I get a net from in thisunfamiliar place.

I slept again.

“Lalit, It’s 6 o’clock.”

“Dad!” My father had come lookingfor me.

“Come, we shall go home. You canleave your bicycle here. The mechanicwill be reaching here shortly and be morecircumspect next time,” he advised.

I was about to pick up my bag whensuddenly a stranger collided with me andmy bag fell down.

“My bag.” I hollered at the loudestpitch of my voice.

“What bag, which bag are you talkingabout? You know the time is 6.40 AMand the Officer has already taken thereport. You were marked absent. I havebeen sent for you. Hurry up or else facehis wrath,” said Ravi Pathak.

Page 23: Readers’ Club Bulletin · Readers’ Club Bulletin ikBd eap cqysfVu Vol. 18, No. 10, October 2013 o"kZ 18] vad 10] vDVwcj 2013 Editor / laiknd Manas Ranjan Mahapatra ekul jatu egkik=k

“Great Ravi, couldn’t you wake meup once you were leaving for PT?” Iquestioned.

“Don’t point at me, I woke you upbut… Hurry up and change.” Within ajiffy, I was in the fields where theOfficer was ready to welcome me.

“Three extra drills, now get rolling,”the Officer thundered in a rapaciousvoice, true to my premonition. I had justentered the fields and rolling for200mts would be a mundane task.

“Can’t you think of any jovialpunishment?” I was about to questionhim but couldn’t. Wry for beginning theday with a wet and green PT shirt, Ireturned to my dormitory.

“It’s fun rolling for 200mts, isn’t it?”Pathak’s sarcasm burnt me to the corewith anger and indignation.

“Pathak, you played a game and hookwinked me. I’ll never forgive you.”

My voice most probably could beheard even in the next dormitory.

“Cool, Lalit, don’t lose yourpatience. Do you recall last night wewere practicing for words? I asked‘deluge’… You said you will think, butin the meanwhile you dozed off. After ashort while I again asked ‘deluge’. OnceI didn’t get a reply, I put the light off andsaid ‘good night’. When I woke you upat 6, your reply was ‘Dad’. You must be

dreaming,” Ravi elucidated. “It’sbreakfast time, let’s move!” he added.

I had just entered the anteroomsafter finishing my lunch. Kumar Vikram, the Cadet Captain, came with the orders.

“Lalit, you get six EDs.”“No, its three,” I remonstrated as the

figure of six was disconcerting.“Look at the CRO,” he asseverated.CRO 007(a) following cadets are

awarded three extra drills for being latefor PT. Cadet Lalit Kumar 2625/Ptopped the list.

CRO 007(b) Cadet Lalit Kumar2625/P is awarded three extra drills forsleeping without a mosquito net.

“Vikram, when did I do that?” “Lalit, don’t you recollect, the Duty

Master came at around 12 o’ clock atnight and took a round of the entireSection. He ordered you to put on yourmosquito net but what you spoke wasmumbo jumbo, and slept without a net.”

“Hey! It’s 3 o’clock, go for ED, elseyou may get three more.”

Vikram stared at his watch. Now, I laugh as I step out of the

anterooms. Really, sometimes, thingshappen to you and you don’t even cometo know.

Readers’ Club Bulletin October 2013 / 25

Nearly 142 years after Charles Darwinwrote that the sounds uttered by birdsoffer in several respects the nearestanalogy to language, MassachusettsInstitute of Technology (MIT)researchers have now found that birdsongclosely resembles human speech.

Researchers from MIT, along witha scholar from the University of Tokyo, say that Darwin was right when he wrotein The Descent of Man (1871)contemplating how human beings learntto speak and language could have had itsorigin from singing.

The evidence, researchers believe, suggests that human language is a graftingof two communication forms foundelsewhere in the animal kingdom; first, the elaborate songs of birds, and second, the more utilitarian, information-bearingtypes of expression seen in a diversityof other animals.

“It is this adventitious combinationthat triggered human language,” co-author and linguistics professor inMIT’s Department of Linguistics andPhilosophy said. The idea builds upon aconclusion detailed in an earlier work, that there are two layers in all humanlanguages; an ‘expression’ layer, whichinvolves the changeable organization of

Birds, Animals and our VoiceMohan Lal Mago

sentences, and a ‘lexical’ layer, whichrelates to the core content of asentence.

The study, authors say that birdsongclosely resembles the expression layerof human sentences whereas thecommunative waggles of bees, or theshort, audible messages of primates, aremore like the lexical layer. Between50,000 and 80,000 years ago, humansmay have merged these two types ofexpressions into a uniquelysophisticated form of language.

Here are two amazing National Book Trust, India publications for children beautifullyillustrated by Durlabh Bhattacharjee. The first book Who is Sharper bears in it ananimal tale that dwells on the importance of wit and how it can become a tool tosurvive in a world deplete of morality.

And, in the second book Forever Friends the frogs and the fish are born in thesame pond and look similar. The frogs think they are smarter as they can live inwater as well as on land. But dangers loom large…an interesting tale about thebonding that came to be between the frog and the fish. The story has been translatedinto English by Deep Saikia. A must collection for libraries, schools and children.
