Das A t o m k r a f t w e r k , v o n Max T h ü r k a u f a l s d i e I ' l e t z t e M a s c h i n e " i n unse rem Z e i t a l t e r b e z e i c h n e t , s t e l l t n u r d i e S p i t z e d e s E i s b e r g s d a r i n e i n e r g r o ß t e c h n i s c h e n E n t w i c k l u n g , d i e s p ä t e s - t e n s s e i t 1945 f a s t a l l e B e r e i c h e d e s Zusammenlebens i n d e n h o c h z i v i l i s i e r t e n L ä n d e r n e r g r i f f e n h a t . Es i s t d e s h a l b n o t w e n d i g , s i c h e i n m a l g r u n d s ä t z l i c h d a r ü b e r k l a r z u werden, was a l l e s u n t e r d e n B e g r i f f " G r o ß t e c h n i k " f a l l e n k ö n n t e . Z u n ä c h s t s o l l h i e r v e r s u c h t werden, a l l e s a u f z u z ä h l e n , was i n d i e s e n B e r e i c h f ä l l t , ohne v o r e r s t a l l z u s e h r n a c h d e n Zusammen- hängen z u f r a g e n , s o z u s a g e n a u s d e r P e r s p e k t i v e e i n e s u n b e f a n g e n e n B e o b a c h t e r s .

A l s e r s t e s s i n d da d i e g r o ß e n F a b r i k e n , d i e M a s s e n p r o d u k t e h e r s t e l - l e n u n d d e s s e n H a u p t m e r k m a l d a s F l i e ß b a n d i s t u n d wo d i e A r b e i t s - t e i l u n g i n s e h r w e i t f o r t g e s c h r i t t e n e m M,aße d a s h e r v o r r u f t , was man m i t dem B e g r i f f d e r E n t f r e m d u n g b e z e i c h n e t h a t . D i e H e r s t e l l u n g r i e s i g e r Mengen v o n P r o d u k t e n , k o m p l i z i e r t e , i n v i e l e E i n z e l s c h r i t t e a u f g e t e i l t e H e r s t e l l u n g s v e r f a h r e n s o w i e e i n immer g r ö ß e r e r E i n s a t z v o n e r f o r d e r l i c h e r E n e r g i e s i n d d i e h e r v o r s t e c h e n d e n E i g e n s c h a f t e n . Es f i n d e t e i n e u n g e h e u r e K o n z e n t r a t i o n v o n A r b e i t s k r a f t , K a p i t a l u n d E n e r g i e s t a t t .

H i e r z u g e h ö r e n d i e l a u f e n d g r ö ß e r w e r d e n d e n E n e r g i e - P r o d u k t i o n s - Z e n t r a l e n a l l e r Art, d i e K r a f t w e r k e , w e l c h e immer g r ö ß e r e Werke u n d immer g r ö ß e r e G e b i e t e z e n t r a l v e r s o r g e n . D i e E l e k t r i z i t ä t i s t d a h e r z u e i n e m H a u p t b e s t a n d t e i l u n s e r e r Z i v i l i s a t i o n geworden .

F e r n e r f a l l e n a u f d i e i m m e r ' g r ö ß e r g e w o r d e n e n Bauwerke a l l e r A r t , i n denen Menschen i n w a c h s e n d e r Z a h l l e b e n u n d a r b e i t e n müssen. A l s B e i s p i e l e s e i e n h i e r n u r a n g e f ü h r t die r i e s i g e n K o n g r e ß - Z e n t r e n ( P a r i s , B e r l i n , Hamburg,usw.) , d e r e n U n t e r h a l t a l l e i n t ä g l i c h e i n Vermögen k o s t e t ( I C C B e r l i n 20.000,-DM/Tag), o d e r d i e W d l k e n k r a t z e r i n d e n USA, i n denen d e r Mensch a r b e i t e t , e i n k a u f t , s i c h " e r h o l t " , wenn n i c h t g a r schläft.(World-Trade-Center i n New-York m i t ca . 25.000 Menschen) .

des Materialismus hat die Quantität einen totalen Sieg errungen über die Qualität. Die Zahl, in unserer Zeit gänzlich ihrer spiri- tuellen Hintergründe und Inhalte beraubt, ist nur noch Ausdruck des Meßbaren und wird somit zum Fetisch des modernen Fortschritt- glaubens, '' je größer, desto besser und 'je schneller, desto besser". Hier liegt der Hauptursprung zur unkontrollierten Massenpro- duktion, mit der die Welt überschüttet wird, ~ h n e nach dem eigentlichen Sinn zu fragen. Hierzuschumacher:

"Wir, die ""Entwickelten"", sind reich an Mitteln, arm an Zielen".

Die Möglichkeit hierzu wurde gegeben durch die Anwendungen der Elektrizität, aber auch die Förderung und B e a r b e i t u n g s m ö g l i c h k e i t e n der Metalle. Hierzu Max Thürkauf:

" Die Eigenschaften des Metalls erlauben den Bau von Maschinen, die sowohl hinsichtlich der Größe und Zahl als auch Intensität die Grenzen und Maße des Lebens bis zur Beziehungslosigkeit über- schreiten."

Und weiter: Die Maße des Lebens sind nicht die Maße der Maschinen, obwohl Maschinenprozesse in jedem Lebewesen feststellbar sind."

Von einer anderen Warte aus gesehen, stellt G.W.Haverbeck in seinem Buch "Ziel der Technik" fest, daß Metalle die "totesten" Bestandteile unseres Planeten sind, und daß daher eine Technik, die sich vorzugsweise mit diesen Stoffen beschäftigt, bei unkon- trollierter Entwicklung zwangsläufig lebensfeindlich werden muD.

Daß es nicht physische Größe allein ist, die die Beziehungs- losigkeit hervorruft, zeigt Klaus Traube am Beispiel der Mikro- prozessoren auf; er hält die rasante Entwicklung der Mikroelektro- nik für die gefahrvollste der Zukunft überhaupt, da ihr nicht im bisherigen Sinne mit Argumenten der Umweltverschmutzung oder -Zerstörung beizukommen sein wird. Aber schon Lewis Mumford, von Traube als Vordenker der Umwelt- schutzbewegung bezeichnet, hat dieses Grundübel moderner Technik erfaßt:

Wir haben unberechtigterweise angenommen, daß das bloße Vorhandensein eines Mechanismus für Vervielfältigung oder Massenproduktion auch die Verpflichtung mit sich bringe, diesen bis zur äußersten Leistungs- fähigkeit auszunutzen. ~ o c h eine solche Notwendigkeit gibt es einfach nicht. Sobald wir das erkennen, sind wir freie Menschen."

Natürlich wird unsere Freiheit nicht allein durch diese Erkenntnis gewährleistet,- aber immerhin klingt hier doch an, daß wir uns von vermeintlichen Sachzwängen (die wir uns selbst auferlegt haben) erst einmal befreien müssen, um die Sachlage zu überschauen.

Wie wichtig diese Erkenntnis heute ist, läßt sich durch die Schätzung Schumachers illustrieren, nach welcher die industrielle Betätigung des Menschen in den 30 Jahren von 1945 bis 1975 ebensoviele Produkte geschaffen hat wie zuvor in der ganzen Mensch- heitsgeschichte bis 1945! Selbst wenn dies vielleicht nicht ganz zuträfe, gäbe eine solcher Vergleich doch genug zu denken! Und Lewis Mumford gibt einer entsprechenden Empfindung Ausdruck, indem er feststellt:

Die düstere Fabel vom Zauberlehrling läßt sich auf alle unsere Tätig- keitsbereiche anwenden,^ von der Fotografie bis zur Reproduktion von Kunstwerken, vom Auto bis zur Atombombe".

H i e r a u f w i r d i n s b e s o n d e r e i n bezug a u f d i e A t o m t e c h n o l o g i e noch zurückzukommen s e i n .

D i e d r i t t e h e r v o r s t e c h e n d e Tendenz, d i e j e n i g e z u immer g e s t e i g e r t e r G e W a 1 t t ä t i g k e i t , v e r d i e n t e s auch, genauer b e t r a c h t e t zu werden, w e i l s i e von v i e l e n Menschen m ö g l i c h e r w e i s e noch g a r - n i c h t so k l a r e r k a n n t worden i s t . I n t e r e s s a n t i s t h i e r d i e These von L. Mumford, d e r z u f o l g e d i e z e r s t ö r e r i s c h e n Tendenzen i n n e r h a l b d e r modernen T e c h n i k , e n t - w i c k l u n g s g e s c h i c h t l i c h gesehen, aus den B e t ä t i g u n g e n des Berg - baus und d e r K r i e g f ü h r u n g a b z u l e i t e n wären. M i t dem Bergbau begann t a t s ä c h l i c h das, was w i r h e u t e m i t H e r b e r t G r u h l d i e " P l ü n d e r u n g u n s e r e s P l a n e t e n " nennen, a n f ä n g l i c h zwar i n r e l a t i v bescheidenem Maße, a b e r d u r c h den E i n s a t z von Menschen- massen (2.B. S i l b e r - , Z i n n - und K u p f e r m i n e n i n Südamer i ka ) o d e r von modernen Werkzeugen ( Ö l s c h i e f e r a b b a u i n Kanada) i n s G i g a n t i s c h e g e s t e i g e r t .

Das G e b i e t d e r K r i e g f ü h r u n g , b e s s e r g e s a g t d e r R ü s t u n g s i n d u s t r i e , s o l l h i e r n u r k u r z e r w ä h n t werden.
