PEINER Umformtechnik is a company of the Indian Sundram Fasteners Limited (SFL)and a leading supplier of fastening elementsfor wind turbines. It supplies well-known manufacturers with the full range of fasteners. This includes HV-sets of dimen-sions up to M64 complying with DIN EN14399 and DASt guideline 021 typically usedin wind turbine systems and also otherfasteners made to customer drawings andspecications.

High quality demandAs construction elements performing a safetyfunction, these fasteners must comply withstrict quality requirements. Consequently, we have adopted high precision standardsand invested heavily in quality assurance. Our quality management system complieswith the high demands of the automotiveindustry and is ISO/TS 16949 and ISO 9001:2008 certied. A part identicationcode permits back-traceability of the end product through the entire manufacturingprocess to the batch of the input material. While testifying to our high quality demand, this code makes the process transparent.

Extensive quality controls of materialsQuality assurance starts with the input materials. Samples of every batch receivedare checked for compliance with the orderspecications, test reports and certicates.Surface nish, chemical composition, latticestructure and workability are also tested. We purchase input materials only from validated, well-known suppliers.

Permanent monitoring of productionSeparate from production, quality assuranceis practiced throughout the manufacturingprocess. All measuring results are includedand documented in the CAQ system. Possibledeviations can be corrected without delay toensure a uniformly high level of quality.

Eective corrosion protectionHot dip galvanizing according to DIN EN ISO 10684 ensures ecient, high-quality corrosion protection even in potentiallyaggressive atmospheres. Depending on theaggressive media, a zinc coat of 50 to 70 µmthickness alloyed with the base material can protect the full function of the bolted connection for many years (Figure 1).

Based on scientic ndings and empiricaldata gained through many years in the

industry, hot dip galvanizing is applied under dened conditions according to themanufacturing guideline of DeutscherSchraubenverband and Gemeinschaftsaus-schuss Verzinken.

Besides as above, any other fastener corrosion protection system can be applied. In addition to hot dip galvanizing, inorganiccoating systems dened in DIN EN ISO 10683have proven to be eective. It goes withoutsaying that no hexavalent chromium is

involved anywhere. This is in line with the ecological approach taken in the wind turbine industry.

Global supplyAs a member of the global network ofSundram Fasteners Ltd. and in cooperationwith logistics partners with worldwide activities we ensure the timely availability of all types of fasteners in customized packaging and specially tailored deliverysystems.

PEINER HV-bolt-sets M30 to M64

Page 6: Windenergie engl. Druck · Sundram Fasteners Ltd. and in cooperation with logistics partners with worldwide activities we ensure the timely availability of all types of fasteners

To ensure the standardized tightening performance and, in case of hot dip galvanized fastening elements also thethread t, PEINER HV-bolts must only beassembled with PEINER HV-nuts and PEINER HV-washers.

Hot dip galvanized PEINER HV-nuts are lubricated ready for assembly. Additionallubrication of the bolts, nuts or washerschanges the preload characteristics and isa cause of assembly failure.

All fasteners of the same nominal size can be combined into sets but should have thesame surface state (no „mixed applications“ ,e.g., a „black“ bolt and a hot dip galvanizednut).

Assembly methodsPEINER HV-sets of large size are preferablyused for bolting ring anges in tubulartowers and lattice towers. In most such cases, torque controlled tightening with standard tightening torques is applied.Lubrication of the nuts applied in the factoryunder process conditions ensures that thestandard preload is obtained by turning thenut when it is tightened.

In addition to this, over-elastic tighteningmethods, which reduce the eect of frictionand produce a higher preload level, areused in the mechanical equipment of a windturbine system. In any such case, the required parameters are dened by us together with the customer’s development engineers. The teamof the application engineering department of PEINER Umformtechnik consists of highlyqualied specialists for such applications.

In addition to this, we cooperate with a partner company for the supply of fastenerspermitting ultrasonic control of assemblyand documentation of the preload obtained. For details, read pages 14 and 15 of this booklet.

Storage of HV-setsThe parts of a bolt set for systematic preloa-ding should be stored in such a way that theirsurface conditions and therefore the functio-nal properties cannot be impaired (for exam-ple, due to corrosion or dirt/dust).

The rotor blade fasteners, which attach the rotor blade to the rotor hub in windturbines, are exposed to extremely highdynamic loads due to the wind eld.

Bolted connections of this type are subject to strict control, especially if thebolt stress characteristic is non-linear atdierent material stiness levels.

Like in the design of bolted connectionsexposed to vibration stress, to improve the brittle fracture tendency of the cross pin, property class 8.8 and 10.9 materials are normally used, which provides substantially higher ductility.

focus of the wind power industry and theiroperators looking for cost eective solutionsof with high safety. Innovative hydraulic orelectric tightening tools save all bolting pro-cess data in a documentation system.Specic parameters are saved on the PMT(permanent mounted transducer). In someapplications, a corrosion resistant ultrasonicsensor can be attached by plasma vapourdeposition (PVD). Depending on accessibility, the PMT sensor can be attached at the boltend (face) or to the bolt head. Due to the uni-que position of the sensor, this innovativetechnology is distinctly dierent from anyother other measuring method. All strengthcharacteristics of the bolt remain unchangedwhen the sensor is attached. The preloadforce is measured by a method similar toecho sounding: The piezoelectric property ofthe sensor generates ultrasonic waves whena very small voltage is applied. The signal tra-vels through the bolt and is reected at thefar end. The returning signals are received bythe transmitter, which acts as transmitter-receiver. The time the ultrasonic wave needs

Proof of the preload force of fasteners can betraced back 100 per cent due to the documen-tation of assembly information. The require-ments on high-strength preload fastenersincrease constantly and are getting into the

dynamic installations. The time saved due to optimized and simplied processes for inspection, maintenance and documentationfully compensates the costs of this innovativetechnology.

for travelling through the bolt is measured by the pulse-echo method. Any change of thistime within the bolt can be determined withplus/minus 3 per cent accuracy. The load factor is determined by means of a calibratedtension machine or on a bolt test rig. This method is extremely accurate and has successfully been used in aviation/space travel, the automotive industry and for several wind turbine projects. To spare thecustomer costly and time consuming datahandling and make this technology availableto users without extensive training, everybolt is provided with a unique data matrixcode (DMC). The code identies the fasteningcase, contains a unique ID number of the boltand the reference preload force. The bar codeis read out by a reader with robust inspectionhead. By pressing a button, the user canmeasure and document the preload force ofthe bolt with no risk of confusion. This boltidentication (digifast ® ) permits 100 % traceability for many years. This installationof bolts with no eect on the friction coe-cient is ideal especially for demanding and

The ultrasonic propagating time of every fastening application must be measured by a tensile testing machineor load cell. The measured propagating time serves as reference for the real-time propagating time during installation of the fastening elements and can be corrected by the tightening method. The propagating time can be converted directly into extension or elongation with consideration of certain parameters (such as mate-rial, temperature, tension).

The ultrasonic sensor is permanent-adhesion and extremely resistant part of the fastening. Depending on theapplication, the sensor can be applied to the bolt head or the far end face of the bolt. Direct contact eliminatesany fault of handling or coupling.
