    Recommendation s): Adopt a Resolution Attachment I) authorizing the City Administrator toAmend Attachment II) an existing contract (CA-PCS-RT-WSpace-009-13-14) with Richard Tavener for the continued program development ofWonderspace Carmel, in amount not to exceed $60,000.

    Executive Summary: In August 2013, the City Administrator entered into a preliminarycontract with Richard Tavener to assess the viability of developing andimplementing Wonderspace Carmel; a series of activities, workshops andprograms tied to the City's rich history and designed to bring boutiqueconferences an d mid-week visitors to Carmel-by-the-Sea. This activity isconnected strategically to the City's Destination Marketing Plan and isdesigned to complement other marketing efforts.

    Analysis/Discussion: The City Administrator engaged Richard Tavener to developWonderspace Carme l. Wonderspace presents innovative learningprograms, boutique conferences and events. It connects science andcreativity and is designed to inspire the imagination, unleash creativethinking for corporate groups, management teams and global leaders inCarmel-by-the-Sea. Wonderspace taps in to the natural beauty of Carmeland its rich history as a showcase for artists, intellectual s, and thoughtlea ders.Phase I Wonderspace activities began in August, 2013 and includedproject evaluation and research, reviewing facilities, activities, technologyand venues, meeting with groups and individuals in the community todiscuss the viability of Wonderspace. This effort was geared at ensuring

    that the program integrates into and, is designed to complement existingmarketing efforts. Mr. Tavener has met with the Sunset Center,representatives of the Community Cultural Activities Commissions, theHID business owners, schools and others over the last several months.Much of Phase I has been completed, including the upcoming Dot Day"event on January 10, 2014 at the Sunset Center. Dot Day was coordinatedwith local schools and is part of a global ce lebration of creativity, courageand collaboration based on the popular children's book "The Dot" byPeter H. Reyno. The students' artwork from Tularcitos, River Elementary,and the Carmel middle schools will be on display at venues throughoutCarmel, including the Sunset Center. A reception and viewing of theartwork is scheduled for January 10, 2014 at Sunset Center .An Amendment to the Wonderspace Carmel existing contract is neededto continue the development of the program, including finaliz ing programcontent, seeking community input, VIP meetings with key influencers,Science/Engineering, Academic/Research, Creative/Arts/ HumanitiesCorporate Leadership/Entrepreneurs Government Leaders and,Philanthropists/Foundations. Additionally, there will be local and regionalcommunity outreach to groups and events as well as corporateleadership events for the purpose of seeking long te rm program fundingfrom legacy contributors.Goals associated with the creation of Wonderspace Carmel include:attracting high-value groups to Carmel-by-the-Sea, developing interactivelearning programs, creativity workshops and challenges, expert andauthor talks, film screenings, leadership conferences, and nature baseddiscovery in distinctive outdoor classrooms. The initiative also includesthe Institute for the Future, a world class "th ink tank" focused onuncovering and communicating the mysteries of human imagination.Wonderspace is being designed to use venues and facilities all aroundCarmel.A series of workshops is being scheduled to obtain community inputbeginning January and February 2014.Richard Tavener is the cofounder of Imagine It , a mu ltimedia educationorganization that develops and presents learning programs aboutimagination and creativity, with content support from StanfordUniversity, Massachusetts Institution of Technology, the Smithsonian,Pixar Animation, MIT Media Lab , X Prize Foundation, Blue Man Group,Sally Ride Science, and the National Academy of Engineering.

    was the Executive Producer ofthe Emmy winning documentary film, Mr.K: A Common Man with Uncommon Visions about philanthropist EvansKauffman.

    RESOLUTION 2014-A RESOLUTION OF THE CITY COUNCIL OF THE CITYO CARMEL-BY-THE-SEA

    AUTHORIZING THE CITY ADMINISTRATOR TO AMEND AN EXISTINGCONTRACT (CA-PCS-RT-WSpace-009-13-14) WITH RICHARD TAVENER,WONDERSPACE CARMEL IN AMOUNT NOT TO EXCEED 60,000.

    WHEREAS, the City of Carmel-by-the-Sea entered into a preliminary contract with RichardTavener, Wonderspace Carmel to assess the viability and develop the program in August 2013; andWHEREAS, Wonderspace Carmel is being designed to connect science and creativity and is

    focused on inspiring the imagination, unleashing creative thinking for corporate groups, managementteams and global leaders in the City of Carmel-by-the-Sea; andWHEREAS, Phase I of the project is complete and Phase II will focus on the continueddevelopment of the program, including seeking community input, coordinating with groups and eventsand seeking long term program funding from legacy contributors; andWHEREAS, Wonderspace Carmel is connected strategically to the City s Destination MarketingPlan and designed to compliment other marketing efforts; andWHEREAS, the funds are p lanned and budgeted for and wil l be authorized from the CityAdministrators budget.NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED THAT THE CITY COUNCIL OF THE CITY OFCARMEL-BY-THE-SEA does hereby:Authorize the City Administrator to amend the existing contract with Richard Tavener,Wonderspace Carmel, for continuation of Phase II in an amount not to exceed 60,000.PASSED ND ADOPTED BY THE CITY COUNCIL OF THE CITY OF CARMEL-BY-THE

    CONTRACT AMENDMENT Phase II: February 1, 2014- Approximately January 30, 2015

    Seek Community Input. Develop and deliver selected workshops, events and programs to the local andregional community.

    VIP meetings with key influencers: Science/Engineering, Academic/Research,Creative/Arts/Humanities, Corporate Leaders/Entrepreneurs, GovernmentLeaders, Philanthropists/Foundations. Local and regional community outreach- individual small- and mid-sized groups

    and organizations. Online and off-line marketing outreach, networking and awareness ramps up by allorganizations involved. Begin outreach for High-value Groups Events and Corporate Leadership

Develop an introductory event (a prelude to the Signature Event) to officiallyintroduce the initiative primarily to the local and regional public -targeted forApril2014.
